at what point do you have a high income job?
stats aside, at what point do you consider a persons salary high income?
to me it goes like this
low - under 45
middle - 40 - 65
upper middle - 65 - 100k
high income - 100 +
now this obviously varies by geographic locations. for instance, $85K/yr could be a real high income in Tennessee but upper middle in Chicago. cost of living is a bitch.

I don't judge people's income unless they are working a job below them.
-
Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
When paying taxes becomes a real bitch...100 plus

I guess I'm a bit spoiled, but to me 100k/year is not high income at all.
Low - under 30k
Middle - 30 - 70K
Upper Middle - 70k - 100k
But I really wouldn't consider someone 'high income' unless they were making 250k+ a year. Probably has something to do with the amount of wealth I was raised with. I'm used to nice things, and was partially raised in a wealthy area, so it takes a lot for me to consider someone 'wealthy' or as having a 'high income'.
(BTW I realize that my personal numbers don't jive with 'real america's' version of what's low, middle and upper income, so please don't call me out saying I'm un-realistic. It's just what I'm used to and what I score by).
EDIT: These are "after tax" figures.

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
If the 'yardstick' used equates to the ability to obtain and maintain an 'upper middle class' standard of living, then there will be major variations between one location and another due to local costs of living, different tax rates, real estate / rent valuations etc. In general ...
- big 'blue state' major city = $ 250k
- big 'red state' major city = $160k
- small 'flyover state' town = $120k

Which is why I posted this. It'd be cool to see all the different opinions from all different corners of the earth.

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
I'd also add 'way south of the border' = $50k !

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
if i got paid the same or more i do for stripping in my chosen highly competitive profession of fashion at a company / position which i love i will be very content [and of course striving for more]
id say around $1,500 per week

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
Fashion is a real tough nut to crack. Keep at it!
As far as geographic income levels, I feel we get the screw job in Toronto. Everything is soooooo expensive.
-
Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
I dont think 100k is high, either.
-
Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
250 or higher, anything less is not considered "high income".

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
in hungary where im from, people whose jobs pay them $1000 per week in australia, pay hungarians $1000 per month. so considering my back home situation i should be way way over the moon that i already make more money than all of my relatives almost. im comfortable like this and wouldnt mind keeping it up only in the career i love

I agree in a way.. basing this on the AVERAGE CND (where I live). These are the numbers I'll go by as well.. basing it on the city and the average income of any career.
For me personally, low anything under 40k
40k - 80k middle
80k - 100k upper middle
This is basing on it on my personally level and opinion based on the standard living where I see myself in life on income.
Anything over 100k is good for me, but where I live, its almost nothing after taxes.

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
Here in L.A. everything is over the top, so IMHO I believe high income is >$250K.
At my employer even the non-degreed union folks make upwards of $65K a year....and that's not including their overtime :irked:!

taxes are atrocious in Canada. 46% of my income is taxed. Free Healthcare is expensive!
my commission cheques pre-tax look beautiful, but once the government is done with them, wow, just awful. same goes with my bonuses.

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
I recall reading a late 60's magazine article in my juvenille years titled "$20,000/ year - Living The Good Life". (Imagine that!::)). I latched on to "The Cadillac Index". At the time the article was written, a loaded Caddy could be had for ~ $7K. So, etched in my perception that :
High Annual Income= 3 Loaded Cadillacs (Deville)
Solid Middle Class Salary = 2 Loaded Cadillacs
Anything Less = Did Not Want To Think About :black_cat
So-o-o, In Todays terms with loaded DTS Models going for $55- $60K:
High Income Threshold ~ $180K
Solid Middle Class Income~ $120K
Not the most scientific method, but there it is...........

^^^ I love how business savy you are! I consider over 250k high income. I sort of judge by the amount of luxurious vacations you can take.

well, in many big 'blue state' major US cities, combined federal + state + local income tax rates are approaching the same ballpark ... without the 'Free' healthcare ! But the same larger point applies - that you must use 'after-tax' incomes versus prevailing 'after tax' local prices to arrive at a standard of living comparison. That's the major reason that, way south of the border, it's possible to live like a queen on $50k a year with essentially zero income taxes and essentially zero embedded taxes in the prices of most products.

Exactly. In New York even $250k doesn't stretch too far when one must pony up over 40% or so to the tax men, then pay very high living expenses.
Now no doubt that nobody is crying a river for folks pulling in that kind of cash, but just pointing out that $250k is really about $140-150k (depending upon deductions, etc.) after taxes.
-
Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
^^^ which is exactly why I moved out of NY and out of the US. With the difference in federal + state + local tax rates in NY versus 'way south of the border', it came down to a question of being able to live 100% off my passive investment income in the land of sun and surf, versus continuing to work in NY for the next 25 years in order to ( essentially ) pay for taxes and higher prices !

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
When you don't have to worry about how much you're making, but still do because you're obsessed with getting as much as you can due to vanity, competition etc.

Re: at what point do you have a high income job?
£100,000 GBP is considered a high income threshold here......so around $175,000 US.
