If its for your job yes. If not then no.
I think certain things that aren't used solely for stripping can't be written off...like tons of people go tanning and get manis and pedis without being strippers. Ask Melonie; she's definitely the expert on this.
a lot of those things you can write half of it off. but when you itemize, you dont have to be specific. its doubtful youll get audited unles your write offs are outlandishly large.
I second Firemaiden - Melonie would be the one to ask. As far as I am aware, write-offs have to pass the "housewife test", e.g. if this is something that you average woman would do, you can't write it off. So nails, hair, waxing etc cannot be written off, but costume makeup (body makeup, primarily) costumes, stripper-specific shoes etc can be.
Sucks, because we have to do so much upkeep and it gets expensive, but there's not a whole lot we can do! I would definitely look into the local limits for "gifts" per year - that can be a real saver on taxes (so, if you can receive up to 5K as a tax-free gift, then 5K of your cash can be considered that).
Actually, you can 'try' to write off anything. The kicker of course is that unrealistic tax deductions are one of the major 'red flag wavers' for IRS computers. So are working in a 'cash' business, as well as working in an 'adult' business. Thus dancers trying to 'push their luck' re tax deductions significantly increases the probability of IRS attention.Quote:

To be 100% 'squeaky clean', the housewife test applies. If a housewife, with no business purpose whatsoever, would spend money on tanning sessions, nail salons, department store makeup / eyelashes, bikinis etc. then these items cannot be safely claimed by dancers as a business expense. However, some dancers have successfully claimed 50% of the cost of these items.
There's much more discussion re tax deductions for dancers in Dollar Den.
^^^ knew that you would be the one to ask!
I have been keeping my receipts for makeup, hair, tanning, nails, etc...since 2006. I have been able to write off all of that with no problem every year :)
Hmm ok thanks...cuz this is my first year im going to be keeping track of things and i am going to be reporting some of my money and doing like a quarterly tax payment
