My point EXACTLY.
Most people DO make more than 600/mo. Only in a place like Africa could you survive on your own for less than 600/mo. Hence the op needing more money, money that is obviously not being offered (in the form of sufficient work hrs) by target.
Dude she already tried the "vanilla job" shit and they're giving her small shitty hrs. I worked at a target 10yrs ago and they always pulled that crap on me too. I think I even wrote bout how much low skill retail sux. I'm honestly surprised she's even making as much as $12/hr at a crap workplace like target. It'd be best to aim for a more lucrative day job first (like office work) but if she can't find one in this economy, who are we to stop her from stripping? She's an adult, she can make her own choices. Atleast she's not looking at illegal work like hookin or drug dealing. Besides how do u have any right to judge when YOU aren't the one paying her bills?

why is she only limited to working at Target?

I completely agree with this, and I think it's what Sylvia was actually trying to say... I don't think she meant to say that dancing to make money is wrong or a bad idea, I think she was just saying you need to make sure you're going into this with a clear head and that it's not the best idea if dancing makes you feel like complete crap and you're only doing it because you feel as if you have no other choice.
Personally, while the only reason I'm staying in this industry is because of the $$, there are aspects to the job that I like. If there weren't I'd be doing something else.

Re: it ALMOST ALMOST happened...
well in that case Sylvia i understand that portion..i do like dress up, wear high heels and feel sexy..AND get people to pay for my bills..that to me are good reasons..im fed up with work, the people at Target i work with, and the fight for more hours working 10hrs a day to only make about $100 (with taxes out) its ridiculous..i have tons of tattoos, and piercings, and i DO NOT want to work at job where i cant be myself and have to cover up (my tatts/take out piercings)..so therefore i would HATE to work in a cubicle or sit at a desk 9-5pm 5 days a week..sorry i ll pass..

i hate to tell you this but there will come a day when you regret the tattoos....that is for sure....
just keep in mind that your "stripping time" will expire and the time frame is relatively short....so unless you save alot of money or invest it very wisely....now is the time to think about what you are going to be doing when you are 40 or 50 years old....
Re: it ALMOST ALMOST happened...
i dont think i regret my tatts..or i wouldnt have taken the time and money to get them done..i ve had them for 6yrs and still love every single one
AND
oh yeah i totally agree with the dancing-as-being-temp but i got my plan all figured out..
"saving money to invest in costume designing" is on the list..thanks

idk... I don't think you can generalize all people in this category (or even just one person) I've met old ppl with tattoos & usually if I get the chance I DO ask them if they regret them (because I always wonder what it would be like to be old with tattoos and I KNOW that I myself would regret a tattoo because I'm so indecisive) and quite contrary to what you are saying, most of them wished they got more or said they don't even think about them. I don't think everyone regrets their tattoos. Sure SOME do but I would never tell someone that they absolutely would regret them. We are all different people.

Re: it ALMOST ALMOST happened...
To go back to your original post....Have you explained to your friend what dancing really entails? I find that with my friends, the ones who didn't aprove didn't really know what it was about. Ignorance is their worst enemy... then they imagine the worse. Like getting gang raped while on meth with a gun to your head worse...which is totally retarted but people still imagine it for some reason!
Re: it ALMOST ALMOST happened...
a real friend will support you no matter what. you need to look out for yourself in this world. I was in a similar situation when I started dancing an looking back, I'd do it all over again.
Re: it ALMOST ALMOST happened...
You seem like a very smart girl who has given this a lot of thought. I will reiterate what the other girls have said. Dancing is a really quick way to find out who your friends are. Also, if done intelligently, dancing is a really quick way to give yourself a financial leg up. Just think of it as a stepping stone to what you are really passionate about... be it school, starting your own business or anything else.
And as for the tattoos, I am sorry to see someone being so judgemental to you. It is your body and it seems like you have enough people judging you right now. If your tattoos make you feel sexy and confident NOW then that is fantastic. If you eventually hate some of them or all of them there is always laser surgery. (Yes, it's not perfect and I'm not suggesting half-hazardly getting tattoos because removal is painful, expensive and never truly perfect. I am trying to be supportive because it sounds like you could use some support right now).
xo

what. was it for the fun? or for the attention? or for the self-empowerment or for the party life?..im confused by ur statement..what woman would become an exotic dancer, only to go thru tribulations of being treated like crap by other dancers/customers, sacrificing the soles on their feet, hustling every night by giving lap dances to smelly musty men..just for the fun or the attention?..or even the empowerment?..i think money is the real reason any woman would truly become a dancer..its quick money and its ALOT..why not
?
Hey! *I* do it for fun and attention. hehe. well only partly, but the money is truly awesome too and I'm glad I'm not on drugs or have a drinking problem. Most of the men I've given lap dances to aren't smelly or musty, in 2 years, honest to god, I've only encountered two or three guys whom were SMELLY (that I had to stop) (one of the guys was last week). Sometimes I have to hustle sometimes I don't (busy Fri/Sat nights). Most customers and dancers don't treat me like crap, I'd say it only happens like 1% of the time. Although I must say management is a bit a pain in the ass, kind of anal on the dress code n stupid shit like that.
Before I started dancing I had just graduated from college and got a crappy just-out-of-school entry level job that paid 16/hr, where I got no respect for being the youngest in the company... I could afford my bills and rent but couldn't buy anything I wanted. Now I pay the bills, rent, and buy EVERYTHING I want with a lot of money left over at the end of the month to save!
If you really want to get into it I'd say go for it! I have no regrets. Stay strong and don't get sucked into the negative aspects of it. All in all, I think that if you are a person like me who hates the 9-5 lifestyle and would very much rather prefer to march to their own drum then go for it.
