Renting Apartment - Owners Provide Internet ?
I need advise about renting out apartment that includes cable internet with the rent lease. The apartment I'm living in right now don't include internet with the rent lease I pay it separate under own account. I'm using DSL right now for cam and want to cancel it save money if I get the apartment that includes internet. I'm a bit paranoid using the internet provided by the apartment don't know if they monitor it. What should I do use the internet they provided only if I know it's private or continue to use the internet I can provide ? I don't know much about cable internet as I never had it before using internet.
Re: Renting Apartment - Owners Provide Internet ?
For apartments that "provide internet", it means one of two things: 1 - they have free internet in some areas of the complex or 2 - they have worked out a deal with the internet company to provide free access to every resident.
The 2nd is the most common and it is EXACTLY like paying for your own connection except the apartment complex covers it. It's like when apartment complexes pay for water. You still get your own water heater and water supply (you don't share hot water with your neighbors) but you don't pay a dime.
Hope this helps. :)
Re: Renting Apartment - Owners Provide Internet ?
I would feel nervous about who is able to view and monitor my internet activities too though... if its that the cables providing internet are in the apartment that you hook your own modem and router up to then thats fine.. But if its an open wi-fi connection then someone out there has access to your browsing history, and yes Id spring for my own internet connection.

I rather pay for my own connection. I've learned a thing or two about letting someone else control the net.
Re: Renting Apartment - Owners Provide Internet ?
Eh.. it's not exactly like having your own Internet connection.
In an apartment complex, there are generally several buildings. Those buildings each have a cable connection coming into them which is split to each of the different units in that building. Generally, a complex which provides Internet would install their own router and switch in each building and run Cat5 or Cat6 ethernet cable to each of the units in that building. The renters would then simply plug into a network jack (or connect to wireless) and have live Internet. This is how it's set up in nearly EVERY apartment complex that provides Internet as part of your rent.
IE: ALL tenants of that one building are connected to the same router (same network). I doubt very much that the management company will monitor the Internet activity, but it's very possible that another tenant might. If they are capable of isolating and hacking the router, which is usually pretty easy. I've cleaned up similar "messes" at three different apartment complexes filled with college students near where I live.
My suggestion to you would be to take advantage of the free Internet, but do so behind your own router. The little network jack you plug into? Yeah, you can plug and configure another router between it and YOU. Doing so will essentially put YOU on a DIFFERENT network than the rest of the people in your building. And you'll be safe to cam your heart out without worrying about someone watching or knowing what you're doing on the Internet. If you don't know how to configure your own router and secure it, ask a friend or pay to have someone come and do it for you. The router itself is cheap (Less than $100). I like Linksys/Cisco. Do this, and you'll be fine.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

This is how the internet connections at all the apartments I've lived in have been. Everyone has their own modem and router even if the internet is paid for by the complex. Maybe things are just set up differently on our ISP?
At any rate, sorry for the misleading info, OP. Follow CoolBreeze's advice and you'll be fine. :)
