"pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
Hi ladies. How do you feel about pole dancing going main stream? I posted my comments on felixcaneinc.com. on her blog, and it's posted under the name Nayla. My comments are still awaiting approval from the moderator. You may want to consider adding your comments as well on her website or even her FB page. This is what I posted on her blog:
From a business stand point I understand wanting to make Pole Dancing "main stream", and if it motivates women to become more fit that's great.
However as an Exotic Dancer who has also trained for years in many styles of dance, my fear is that the move to turn "Pole dancing "commercial" will exploit the art form.
Pole Dancing is a part of Stripping (although many prefer to call it Exotic Dancing). It's about seduction and fantasy, it honors the power of female sexuality, and the art form was born in STRIP CLUBS.
In an effort to make Pole Dancing acceptable to the masses, there seems to be this push to turn it into a sport, sanitize it and ignore it's history because it makes some people uncomfortable.
Recently I watched a very boring video of a woman Pole Dancing. She had great gymnastic technique, but appeared to have no clue on the "art of seduction". Every dance style has a certain attitude and if the heart of a particular dance style is missing, well then it's lost. If Pole Dancing becomes an Olympic sport will it become mechanical and with out heart?
As an artist I feel as though not acknowledging the heart of Pole dancing does a great dis-service to the dancers who have worked hard to put on a great show. And as a woman I hope that those of us who are Exotic Dancers will choose to hold on to our power and stand up for the origins of our art..

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
Well, I feel like honestly, the same people that talk shit about strippers are the same people paying for pole dancing classes. Actually, my pole instructor has confirmed this. All her clientele is house wives and we all know how the majority of housewives feel about us dirty strippers. ;)

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
I'm all for it going mainstream. I'm sick of my family rolling their eyes when I talk about pole dancing. They look at me as if I'm stripping. Ha. If they knew the truth...
Olympic sport, NO! I look at it much the same way that Felix does. It's an art form. I don't want to do it as a sport if I can't wear my heels.
Mainstream is fine with me. Taking away the taboo and all. But if we have to strip it of the sexuality/sensuality, I think that it would be a bad way to go with it, like making it into a sport aims to do.

By the way, I couldn't find your comment. Maybe post a link?

Okay! I couldn't agree more and I'm not a fan of it going mainstream. It really doesn't matter how popular pole dancing gets there are still some people that will always look down upon it and the people doing it.
There are divided camps on this issue, but I have seen more than one pole dancing studio in my area write in fine print, no strippers welcome. There's such a double standard and it's like these newbie pole princesses don't think we're worthy to stand next to them in a class.
It's distasteful and unfortunate. To me, it's just another form of discrimination and half these so called pole instructors don't even look the part, dance with no feeling, sexiness, or artistic creativity.
Felix is one of a handful of elite pole dancing thoroughbreds. Most pole classes are not being taught by someone with such an impressive resume. Please do your research ladies...

Hell yeah, I'd pay for a class if she was the teacher too, but that's not the reality in many of these fly-by-night pole studios.

The whole issue is a bit insulting..

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
To the OP, are you concerned about pole dancing as just pole dancing becoming mainstream? Or are you concerned about strippers pole dancing becoming mainstream?
And yes, the housewives turning their noses up at strippers in pole dancing classes is just ridiculous. Who do they think they're trying to emulate by pole dancing?

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
-IF- pole dancing were to go the way of a sport, I'd see it being more like rythmic gymnastics, figure skating, ice dance, ball room dancing, etc, a sport that has an "artistic" aspect to it, and is judged as so. I used to figure skate, and it's a pretty similar concept as a sport to pole dancing. Specific physically challenging requirements for each level/category, but then HOW each requirement is carried out also merits points or deductions. And then there's a mark for the performance aspect, how all the components flow together.
As to the snobby housewives, I agree, it's sad. I get it that they're taking a step towards embracing their sexuality or doing something different or whatever, but how can you take that step without at least being open minded about the ROOTS of the discipline you want to learn?!?! I just don't understand why women must do this whole heirarchial bullshit comparing of eachother for absolutely everything. Because openess about sexuality is only one of the fronts for comparisson. There's also intelligence, appearance, relationship status, kids, clothing/accessories, the list goes on and on and on. Some lady wants to think she's better than me in a pole class for NOT being a stripper she can suck my hypothetical dick because that's just sad AND hypocritical...

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
Hold Up!!! They really have pole classes with no strippers welcomed? How they think this shit got started? And a lot of those housewives are in there tryna learn what the so called dirty strippers do. Whether it's just at home or in the club, I can't wait to start twirling on a pole!
-
Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
When I start my pole studio, you better believe I'm going to welcome strippers with open arms! Generally speaking, they have more money to spend than the housewives. ;)

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
^^ Are you having the studio in Philly? That's my hometown and I would love to check one out when I go back.
-
Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
Not sure yet. I haven't quite established roots here. But I can't really imagine myself anywhere else in the coming years. So possibly, yes.
But my pole studio/adult store is still hugely in the planning/daydreaming phase.

Felix comes around a couple of times a year to teach workshops at the studio I go to (and yes, I'm a "strippa" for years now). She was charging I think $100 for around 3 hrs or something like that. It's an intensive, half day kind of thing.

Also in the studio where I have been taking classes (and this is just funny). I haven't been there in months because of an incident that landed me in the hospital for nearly 3 weeks in the beginning of the year and then I've been traveling since then. But when i first started, it was all about "no stripping, no tipping" "we're pole dancers, not strippers". In fact one of the instructors who worked in a bikini bar kind of snubbed me because I danced topless/:O
Fast forward to a recital last year, and that same instructor ends her show (this is at the studio, not a club) w/ ripping her top off! Hypocritical maybe???
Then less than a month ago, they give another recital and ask that people paying to see this bring a $20 bill to be changed into singles to give the new students confidence::)
Oh no, they're not strippers or training pole students to dance for tips::)
I will say this though, on a good note: this studio has some of the best teachers around. Three come to mind who have won many awards, are really strong and have patience.

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
LOL, hypocritical definitely. I guess there's a very thin, blurry, damn near non-existing line between what they consider classy and trashy. Sounds like some hater mess to me.

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
I'm not a fan of pole dancing going mainstream. In general, I think that everything stripper related is now going mainstream ie. Versace and Louis Vuitton now make 7 inch heels and I don't like it. I feel like strippers are apart of a special gang and people that haven't been jumped into the gang shouldn't be able to partake in our activities.

But strippers are generally self-taught and don't really like to take instruction cause they are stuck in the ways they first learned. It's really hard to break the habits I've already learned at the club in the studio. My instructor says she only has a a handful of stripper clients. The rest are all housewives. She also told me that alot of the housewives don't like to do the sexy stuff..they are just very mechanical with it. Like the basic thing she teaches after doing a trick and landing on the floor with the sexy but dip thing she says alot of the housewives avoid doing it lol. So stupid.
-
Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
She has a class just for the strippers so we don't feel weird around the housewives which I think is good, personally. Were our own breed and they would never be able to compare anyways ;)
PS, we all wear our 7 in heels!!! Yeah strippas uniteee.

Boooooooo, lol. Then what's the point in trying to learn? IMO If you wanna put on a show, then put on a damn show!

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
In all honesty I think housewives look freakin stupid when they are doing 'poletricks'. And have you seen women wearing 7 inch heels trying to walk in them? They steal these things from us and have no idea how to pull it off.

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
I think when our industry is going mainstream, it is the beginning of the end.....Ragnorok, the twilight of the gods.

Re: "pole dancing" going main stream? felixcaneinc.com
When I think of pole dancing as mainstream and popular I remember the incident where the woman was left paralyzed after falling from a simple trick.
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2010/0...lass-accident/
"Now, the mother-of-two requires a ventilator to help her breathe and can only communicate through a computer that tracks her eye movements.
Plowman, who had attended pole dancing classes for two years, was hanging upside down just 1-foot above the ground when she fell on her head and was knocked unconscious."
Like... housewives really think that risking SERIOUS bodily injury is worth 'feeling sexy' or whyever the fuck they take pole classes?
Makes NO SENSE to me.

In reading the article, I thought of the episode of house where the Yoga chick was paralyzed/ couldn't move, but she wasn't really, and it turned out she had scurvy.
Either way, that's terrifying.
Desuvsdeath, are you not a fan of pole dancing? Or just not housewives doing it? ;)

This I completely agree with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voe7spgE9EY
I don't know how far in it is, but she mentions that she'd like to take away the taboo, but she doesn't see it becoming an Olympic sport and wouldn't want to take part in that, if she couldn't wear her stilettos. And also that she sees it as an art form, a la Cirque du Soleil.
But I have beef with the USPDF because of their rigidity, and how they're trying to sell it as a sport. Hot pants, sports bra, no removing articles of clothes, etc.
I love Miss Pole Dance Australia, though because they treat it as an art form, and it's still highly sexy.
