Just looking for some academic support
The other thread I posted was also about school so now I feel like a loser, haha, oh well.
I'm a junior in college. I need to find three or four classes to take this summer to be on track for graduation, and so far I haven't been having much luck.
Next year I was lucky enough to land my dream internship for the fall, in addition to the five classes I will be taking. My final semester I will be taking either four or five classes and then finally GRADUATION. However, before graduation in order to be satisfied with myself I still need to raise my GPA 0.5 points.
This thread has no real point. I just wanted to get it all out I suppose. Are there any other collegiate strippers that are getting close to graduation and feeling the crunch? Any recent graduates that can offer support?
Re: Just looking for some academic support
I'm not a recent grad, but I remember those days quite well (I got my masters 7 years ago). I remember the very last semester of both under grad and grad school and how scared I was.
My last semester of college I was so excited to finish. I had dropped out for a few years and finally decided I needed to go back and finish the last year I needed. My classes were easy and though I was taking 19 credits I finished all my assignments by the middle of semester. I ended up at that point just going to classes and doing whatever additional work they assigned us. I was so stressed though by finals and scared I wouldn't pass. Why I was scared I don't know since all my classes were A's but getting that close is scary. So finally the last week happened. My school ran on a different schedule than most (this has since changed)so my last week was the week after Memorial Day. Anyway, as I finished each class I realized it was over. By the time of my last class I was relieved because I didn't have anything to do in the class except hear a few speeches (we had to give speeches and mine was due the week earlier). As it was closing everyone said "we'll keep in touch" but as time has gone on people lost touch. As I walked out I realized I would never see most of them again. Oh and as I was walking out I happened to see my teacher from the class I had earlier and she told me that I got an A on the final so I got an A for the class.
Then when I started grad school there were times I didn't think I would go through. We had to maintain a 3.0 and had to get a B in every class. I had a professor who was a bugger and would often give low grades. He was Nigerian and would often attack American students as "stupid". Yeah really nice. I kept my mouth shut and passed the class. This was a week before Christmas and the second to last semester. In my last semester of school I had to do my final project, and I decided on a documentary. As it turns out I ran into unexpected problems with the documentary and knew I couldn't finish it in a semester. So long story short I went to talk to my advisors and they agreed I could create a website instead using the footage. Did I mention that I had no idea how to design websites? Yep, so a friend of mine sent me FrontPage, I bought a book on it, and designed a website with video and photos. I then had to find a web server and all of the things involved with a website. I then sent the link to my advisors and they ended up giving me an A.
Trust me, it gets overwhelming when you get to the end, but it will pass and you will realize it was worth it. You will worry yourself more than you should (I did) but it will work out.
Re: Just looking for some academic support
I was there not to long ago. I was taking 5 classes a semester, and eventually burned out to one class a semester while pregnant. It was hard. I was working for a while, but when I was in my second trimester, I stopped. It was all too much. I had to maintain my gpa to keep my scholarships, I was having a baby, I had to also student teach at the same time...
But then it all passed, and I had that degree in my hand, along with classes towards my masters. All the stress was over. It was a huge relief. I took that summer off and just breathed.
Re: Just looking for some academic support
I'm graduating in a week and yeah it can be hard. I took some time off from work just to make sure everything went smoothly for my exams. The best piece of advice I can give is to do every piece of extra credit work you can... that way if you have a little slip up or need cushion it will be there! Good luck!!
Re: Just looking for some academic support
Good luck. Im not close to grad... 3.5 more years out of 5 but I graduated only 6 years ago from first degree. I found it much easier the first time around cause life was easier. The best advice I can give is to make school your priority. I am making sure I do uni work everyday. Even if you can only manage a half hour a day thats 3.5 hours extra study a week and your marks will show it. Ive sacrificed my lifestyle by cutting way back on work so I can study and at first it was hard, but it is totally worth it. I dont get anywhere near as stressed around exams because Im prepared and I get my assignments done early. You can do it!!
Re: Just looking for some academic support
Oh the semester-end crunch :writing: SO FUN.
I just finished my last grad class this spring, but still have to write my thesis <groan>. I also danced during my undergrad... Hang in there. When you walk across the stage at graduation, it will all be worth it.
Re: Just looking for some academic support
TD, you're at UF, right? Congrats on being ABT...do you know Debbie Triese by any chance?
Re: Just looking for some academic support
Yep, UF... and thanks :) It's been a lot of work but a great experience. And of course I know dean Triese! She is such a delight...down-to-earth and approachable (unlike some of the others with god-complexes).
Re: Just looking for some academic support
I only really know her tangentially, but yes, she is cool.
Do you have a timeline on finishing your thesis?

In the fall. I am taking the summer off to work. I am pretty burnt out right now and need to step away from it for a couple of months... hoping that will refresh my perspective.
And frankly, I'm not in a rush to graduate because then I will have to begin loan payback...

i graduated a yr and a half ago. beware of senioritis! mine set in junior year!
my advice is to space out your electives. if you put your electives off till the end you are going to be extremely mad at your college that they are forcing you to stick around and spend money to take classes that are totally irrelevant to your major. this is what happened to me... after 3 yrs of college i had taken every class related to my math degree and i only needed to take a geology lab, and a couple of electives related to the humanities. so my final semester of college was 3 classes-- a geology lab that a 5th grader probably could have passed (and enjoyed more) and 2 writing classes. i was pissed as fuck that they made me stick around that semester and give them money for that bullshit just to get my degree. although this was largely poor planning on my part, if i planned properly i could have gotten out a full yr early.
also it sounds like your schedule is going to be packed next yr, so i would try to do any required courses that are extremely difficult or involve a lot of writing over the summer if possible so you dont have to juggle them with your internship. especially if they have different and easier professors over the summer... at my school i managed to take complex analysis with my favorite math professor who normally does not teach it because i took the course over the summer while my classmates who took it during hte regular school year had to suffer through the class with a poor teacher who loved to assign loads of homework. so look for easy outs like that if you can find any. i am sure you have been to ratemyprofessors.com, but if not here is the link so you can assess which professors give less workloads and are easier going.

Absolutely, staying focused is the key. I managed to do well in getting my bachelors degree by staying focused on my goal of graduating. You can't let friends, boyfriends, or anybody distract you. Graduating is a great feeling. It makes you feel like you can do anything because you had to do so much work to accomplish your goal. And remember, nobody can take that away from you. I wish you the best ;D
