Re: Dealing with a bad back?
I have a really bad case of scoliosis. That, combined with wayyy too many pole tricks has resulted in constant back pain. Massages (in my expereince) are very short term, maybe I'd feel better for a day or two, but in the long run it just seemed like a huge waste of money.
Do you have access to a hot tub? I spend about an hour a day stretching in the hot tub and that has tremendously helped my stiff back.
You're absolutely right, yoga does help too!
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
Oooh the hot tub idea sounds great! I'll definitely try that. : )
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
Getting more potassium in your diet helps tremendously. I used to suffer from major muscle knots in my back and shoulders but once I started incorporating at least one banana a day in my diet I've noticed a drastic improvement within one week.
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
Oh man I have SEVERE back problems. Actually it's mostly my neck. Always had problems but 2 car accidents and 5 years of (lots of stage) dancing and 7 inch platforms.....I'm a train wreck! Just this morning I couldn't get out of bed for an hour because I was too stiff. I keep a hot pad next to my bed for this purpose. Cat's Claw helps with pain as does Ibuprofen for inflammation but of course you shouldn't take that on a regular basis and it's only a band aid.
Epson Salt baths and ice if your swollen helps a lot! Massage therapy helps but only if you go on a regular basis. I am def gonna have to try yoga. I've heard that really does help. I stretch a lot especially when Im working and that helps.
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
you ladies spend a lot of time in very high heels and that can cause your hip flexors to shorten, which in turn will tighten up some of your back muscles (at least that's the most common cause). If it's so bothersome you can't work, and you can't afford to not work, get evaluated by a medical professional, and don't wait. If you don't correct the problem it will only get worse. Good luck.

This is very true. Not to mention that there are some club managers that don't give a damn about the girls to the point where they'll tell you to find another job if you can't wear the heels which have caused your back problems to go from bad to worse.

Biobreeze does wonders with a good massage. especially for the neck and shoulders and lower back.

Re: Dealing with a bad back?
I hate to give stock advice, but I've fucked up my back in two accidents - neither of which i was wearing my seat belt during. Yoga twice per week has been so good to me!
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
For me working out several times a week keeps my back problems in check. The times I haulted working out caused me more bodily aches in general.
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
Doing core exercises help, especially if your back problems are muscular and not related to the actual spine. My back hurts so much from hyper-extending it in my dancing shoes, and hurts even more when I do long runs. I'm going to start doing yoga like Discuntent suggested, and keep being vigillant about sit-ups and superman raises.
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
yoga, hot water (hot tubs were *invented* for therapy!), and a tennis ball on a stick knocking around the knots have been godsends to me. Massages also help, but like mentioned, only for very short term.
The biggest factors have me have been mattress quality, and types of motion. I'm not a stripper, but during my camshows I like slipping into yoga positions in ways that fit the show, and it helps, if only for just a few minutes
Re: Dealing with a bad back?
i also have scoliosis and camming has made my back pain worst i just brought a waist training corset and when wearing it and a few hours after i take it off i don't have any back pain.
