Sounds like a good role model... The Post misrepresented the facts, and subsequent sensationalism (the other side of political power) did her in. This idea that SHE said something IN the workplace is just BS, and it would be nice if someone helped her sue the Post for defamation (libel) of character.
I hate that she has been treated as a sexual offender, but outraged that all of the talk about craigslist, and the safety of "these poor women" rings of such hollow hypocrisy when NO ONE in the media gives a second thought to posting her home address!
this whole war against sex workers rages on all the time, day in day out. i am so sick and tired of the stereotypes. i am so sick of ppl thinking that they know better for my life than i do, excuse me, do you pay my bills? i just wish that maybe in a perfect world that we could be seen as the strong independent woman that we are and not the poor pathetic victims that they make us out to be. maybe i am just dreaming tho, too much hatred within society for sexual empowerment.
Hehe, I'd love to visit other sections, but then I would have even less of a life than I do now. :(
Exactly. It doesn't belong in this section. WHy is it here?
Sorry BUT I don't want to visit the other sections of this site. I have no need for it. If you don't like it here then why are you here? You're not a frequent poster in other work nor are you a moderator so you really can't come in here and tell us how to to things. It does have to do with other work. It is about a hooker/sex worker/escort. So yes I feel it DID belong her. End of story. That's my 10 cents.
I can see how the thread would belong to both Industry Insight an Other Work and the call on where the thread should go or if it should be moved is best left up to the mods.
It really feels like Other Work has become a sub-forum with only one place to post, where as those active in the main forum move around the different sections (including this one). The threads in this section are more like conversations.
I have lurked in the other sections of Stripperweb, but it's harder to get a feel for it, kind of like it's the major bookstore chain, and "our" other section is the coffee shop. Perhaps a group effort to visit one other section and re-post some common topics would be a nice way of putting a few new books on the shelves.
She was a hooker.
That is Other Work.
And as for the clique, there has already been huge discussions in OW about making our own forum...LOL
It's a whole 'nother world here. You have been here since Jan. of this year Bringonthemen, and what you don't realize is that many girls in this section don't like to venture out because there can be a "stripper's are better than hookers" mentality up in the other sections. It hasn't been near as bad since the girls in OW have stuck together, but I can remember times in the past (and yes I have been longer than 08 under another name) where all out blatant whore hating was allowed and even encouraged. SAD! That is why I left SW the first time. It is comfortable down here not have to worry about being judged by your sisters.
Carry on :)
I definetly think it should have been in Industry Insight, too though.
Great article, she's very articulate; she says many things I often think but can't put into words. Like this: I had long ago realized the media generally treats current and former sex workers in one of two ways: We are portrayed as victims, looked down upon and felt sorry for, too stupid to realize our own victimization; or else we are made out to be villains -- dirty, cheap and willing to do anything to satisfy our greed." I hate this, there's no way to win.
Anyway, thanks for posting it Minnie. I think we wish you would all post more in other sections so that we don't miss out on some great threads like this one; but I understand wanting to keep it to your tight-knit community here on this one board. I just pop-in every now and again to see what's happening!
Hmmm idk. When I first log in to SW I see things like "Industry Insight"- 2 viewing, "Ladies Only"- 9 viewing and "Other Work"- 90 viewing. Like, ALL the time. I hardly feel like it would do any thread as much of a disservice to post it exclusively in other work versus posting it exclusively anywhere else, forum-wide.
Do you really think it's a serious "cam girl clique" in here? I don't get that feeling at all. I think that by the very nature of what camming entails (sitting in front of the computer on the internet all day communicating with strangers), it's only natural that a forum (a place where you sit in front of the computer on the internet typing to strangers) will have a high concentration of camgirls.
Camming is different from any other type of sex work simply because the domain IS the internet. Stripping is inside the club. Escorting is wherever the fuck that goes down. Modeling too. Y'know? I know that when I was a stripper I never ventured into the OW section, not even once, because it simply wasn't relevant to me. Now that I'm a camgirl I find little use for any of the other sections because there's so much happenin' over here!
It really sucks that girls who don't cam take this all so personally. There are a few shit starters over here, that's no secret, but for the most part I don't think anybody means to alienate anyone else or cause any ill feelings. Idk...
I read posts all over, but spend most of my time in this section, even though I was a stripper for 14+ years and am just now thinking about camming. I like it over here... slowly getting the feel for the personalities of the girls who regularly post here makes it feel like being back in a club to me. I like the feeling of comraderie (even if you bitches talk behind my back when I'm not here - ;D).
Anyway, with regard to the story, I find it fascinating that reactions to someone's sex industry past can be so varied. For instance, when I applied to law school back in the late 90's (yes, I know many of you were like 5 - lol) I wrote my entrance essay for my application about the discrimination that I was subject to because I was a sex industry worker. I even started the essay off, "People told me I was crazy for admitting this, but..."
I got into every school I applied to, and the top tier school that I ultimately attended actually included my story in "look how diverse we are" section of the first year admission packets that they sent out to the entire enrolling class. (My mom was sooo proud. 8) )
While the law school actually seemed to revel in the novelty of having a locally well known and unabashedly candid stripper on campus, the Bar to which I was ultimately admitted was much less thrilled with the idea. It took me 16 months to be gain admission after having passed the bar exam on the first attempt in the 96th percentile. They made me suffer through multiple in-person panel interviews to determine "my fitness and character." If you know more than two attorneys you'll immediately realize why that's ironic. ::) Remembering some of the comments made by the panelists during those interviews still makes me cringe. Ultimately though they accepted that I just wasn't going to go away.
The point of my incredibly long winded post is just this...you have to be prepared for people to never accept your past and either say "fuck it" and gamble by telling them, or make sure that your secret remains guarded forever. Sometimes when you put it out there right up front it can actually make people admire your moxy, but I wouldn't suggest this to anyone who wants to work with children in the future.
I really hope that the author keeps her chin up and uses her present 15 minutes of fame to do something positive for those of us involved in this industry. She's obviously very bright and is a good writer, and now has a platform to showcase that we're not all dummies, victims or greedy societal parasites.
Minnie, Thank you very much for posting that article here in other work. It was a very good read.
I can understand why 'other work' girls would want to stay exclusively in this forum, but the (in my opinion) absurd amount of posts actually keeps me from venturing into this forum very often. Obviously, the number of occupations which fall under the other work umbrella is huge, but there's also a bunch of posts that really do make more sense in the other sections available on the board. There is some incredibly useful stuff here, but a lot of it gets buried.
Plus, if you enjoyed this article, odds are you'll enjoy a lot of what's found in a few of the other sections on the board. And I think the reception BOTM received kind of proved her point. Obviously you don't have to explore the other sections, but it'd be cool if this board was a bit more cohesive.
Exactly!! ^^
