Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
i have dark brown hair. i used to get it bleached but i'm sick of paying for it, and them rushing with my hair because they want to get more hair appointments in and don't do a good job on my hair.
so i'm thinking i might try to bleach my hair at home. i saw a few youtube videos online of girls who do it. you only need $15-20 worth of supplies, and those supplies last you between 6 months to a year.
so i'm thinking about doing it myself.
does anyone else do this/know someone who does this? how does it turn out?

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I have done it before when I was in college, but I have to caution you. It's tricky to do on our own and have it look nice, and if you achieve the result you want, it's very hard on your hair.
If you want to do it yourself, really be honest about what kind of condition your hair is in. You will have to invest more than $15-20 to keep the hair in good shape after coloring.
Here's a post from my old blog when I covered going blonde

.
Definitely this.
I've bleached my hair A LOT and it is the most damaging thing I ever could have done. I WISH I would have had the money at the time to go to a professional.
I agree it's really hard to achieve the color you want. Sometimes it can take more than one bleaching session to get to a blonde.
Bleach...then wait a few days...then bleach again.
Just make sure to read up, get some good information, and some gooood deep conditioner. Honestly, if you can afford to keep getting it done at a salon, I would really just stick with that.
It really sucks when the results aren't what you wanted. :(
If you do decide to do it, I hope everything turns out great. :)
(I attached some pics of how my hair turned out when I tried to go blonde...it came out orange. I think if I would have done another bleaching, it probably would have lightened even more, but it really made my hair super coarse and dry. So I just dyed it back to normal. I'll delete these in a second, especially since I have my son in the "trying to go blonde" pic..lol...)

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I've been doing my hair for about a yr now...i have the darkest blonde u can be naturally. Now my hair is white lol i love it. The only thing is..is when u do it urself its hard to not get the bleach on the already blonde peices that u did like 4 weeks ago. So now that i've been doing it for a yr..my hair is a lil damaged as will urs be too. So i went to a high end salon and got the best conditioning treatment they have and then bought a deep conditioner. So i believe i will do my hair half the time and go get it done half the time.

OMG NO!! I have very very dark brown hair and have been going to a pro for 15 years.....last Dec I wasnt making any money and did it myself......ended up breaking all the top of my hair off to an INCH!!!!! This was december, and I still am sporting a fucking MOHOWK I am still sick to my stomach over it and besides, you wont get it blonde on your own, no matter what they tell you SALLYS does NOT sell anything strong enough if you have super dark hair......it will be orange at best

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
^^i do agree about the sally's bleach....DO NOT USE!! it WILL turn ur hair orange bc their bleach will only lift so many levels and it's never enough. I order my bleach online. But u can get the peroxide there tho and it works great.

cosign that sallys developer is garbage. feel free to share remedies for orange hair strands.

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I used sally's products... Bucket of Prism Lights Blue Lightener with Clairol Pure White Developer 30v and went from chocolate brown to platinum. It just took 2 processes. I went chocolate to orange. Then orange to pale pale yellow. Then put a platinum toner on top. And with a lot of deep conditioning and taking care of my hair afterward, it's really soft and super light. :)

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
hmm. yeah i'm not working right now so i don't have any extra money to blow so idk if i can get it done in a salon... i need to get it done in 2 weeks (the roots are already really bad, like almost a quarter of an inch, but i feel like i can bear it for 2 more weeks)... i bought a great deep conditioner with keratin in it and it made my hair feel amazing.
if i work up the guts i might go to an amateur night tonight... and hopefully make a few bucks.

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
My hair typically comes out MUCH less damaged and looks much nicer when I do it myself vs see a professional.
But it can be hard to learn to get the exact results you want... and if your hair is already bleached it can be very difficult to match the exact shade of the rest of your hair. I'd suggest going in at least one more time to find out what toners are being used, ect.
And seriously... if they're rushing and doing a bad job... COMPLAIN. Make them redo that shit correctly! You're paying good money, you better make damn sure they do what you're paying them to do!

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I have a very dark brown hair and bleach it platinum... I really wish I would stop being so cheap and pay the extra money for the salon. It doesn't look horrible but it does soooo much damage even if you're careful. I had one night where I bleached again too soon after bleaching it and all I had to do was run my hand over my head and I was pulling up clumps of hair! I was in tears.
If you're going to do it yourself, be very careful. Make sure your roots are long enough in between bleachings because it's very difficult to apply it perfectly yourself. I use Clairol Blonded by the Light. They used to sell it at Walmart for about $10 but they recently stopped carrying it... so now I have to order it online.

YES, so on point! ^ This is how my hair got ruined, sylist was in a hurry, & lots of clients for homecoming dances, so she left bleach sitting on my hair. I complained & had it redone, + later got my $ back, but the damage wasl done, I'm still dealing with it, lucky it wasn't worse.
Idk if you/re aware, but there is a higher volume perxoide you must use, I use 20 for my root touchups (drk/med. gold/neutral blond) but to go lighter you need 40 vol.
I use Sally's Clairol Professional w/soy but again, my color's a darker one.
Good luck!

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I wouldn't do it at home unless you're VERY experienced and know exactly what you're doing. It's SO unbelievably easy to get it wrong and eff up your hair... think of the money you spend at the salon as a way of saving yourself the time and effort of learning how to do it right, finding the right products, and possibly ruining your hair.
And yeah, if you've had stylists rushing your hair and doing a bad job, complain about it and get them to fix it ;) Or just look for a better salon, and ask for a stylist who has a lot of experience in blonde hair.
If you're strapped for money, you could also try beauty schools, which typically charge a lot less than a regular salon.

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I had bleached blonde hair for years and used good old cheap Feria from Target to do it myself. My natural color is dark brown like my avatar pic now. It can be done, just remember when you retouch your roots, only put the color on your roots! Don't keep bleaching the same hair over and over or it will break.

yes, your hair color is the same as my natural color.
do you remember what box you got? i tried googling it and at least 5 different "blonde" boxes came up.
thank you <3

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
The one that says extra bleach blonding, and has the powder form packets inside. Anything else will leave it orange!
Just looked it up. Color number 200 or 205. With the dude or the chic with short hair on front(unless they changed models again on new boxes).

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
i think i am going to try how this girl does it on youtube... my natural hair color is the same as hers and my bleached hair is the same as mine/how i want to keep it... and her hair is EXTREMELY healthy. she shows you exactly what to use and how to do it so that you don't kill your hair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuovL...eature=related
now i just need someone to help me with the back, haha. my bf already said he won't due it for liability purposes LOL

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
ok hun.....I dont know what color your hair is, but the girl in that video has a dark blonde, brown root......please look CLOSLEY...... if your hair is in fact a true dark brown you are not going to get those results!!! I just love it when people who dont have really dark hair tell everyone this can b done, perfect example......how many Asian, Mexican women.....have achieved a non orange horrible shade of blond? That girls hair is healthy because she is only lifting her roots about 6 levels......someone like an asian has to lift 11 levels, do your research

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
In that youtube video she said that Sally's no longer has the wellite cream/oil lightener. I wonder what you would use instead. anybody know?

as far as i know there are no more oil lighteners available in the US. the most popular bleach that works really well is quick blue powder bleach, available pretty cheap at sally's. that is what i bought today. with pure white 20 vol developer.
when i got my hair done at the salon 20 vol always worked well on me, getting the platinum color without a toner, so that is what i'm gonna go with.
i'm going to touch up my roots within a week. i'lll post my before and after pics when it's done! :)

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
I'll be interested to see how all of this turns out. I did at home bleach to make my hair a platinum blond a long time ago. I remember using a 40 volume developer, but I also remember my hair falling out in chunks...so I am doing my research this time around :) I am glad you stated this thread!

yes, i know a bunch of people who went/go to beauty school and they are basically teaching me how to do it myself. they say to NEVER put 40 vol directly on the scalp. some hesitate to use 30 but most use 20.
they described it to me like miles per hour. 10 slow, 20 moderate, 30 faster, 40 fastest. the higher the volume, the faster your hair is going to damage and the less control you have over the development of the color. 20 is a good balance because it might take a little longer, but you CAN go platinum with 20 vol and your hair will be MUCH LESS damaged.
i'm excited to try this myself!!

Re: Does anyone with dark hair bleach their hair platinum at home?
Wanted to recommend: try searching 'bleach' or blonde or blond here on the bodybuisness fourm of SW. I've lightened my own hair at home many times before and it came out nicely, and I've typed out exactly what I've used and how I did the process many times before here on the fourms. You can read the experience of other members and learn from their mistakes before doing your own hair.
Good luck! I bet it'll look great!
