Sugar and Sugar Substitutes
Need someone to make sense of this for me. I've tried to give up sugar and replace it with artificial sweeteners. Then, I heard artificial sweeteners are bad, so I turned to honey and agave nectar. Then, I read an article that said these have more calories than sugar.
What is the best replacement for sugar? If I have to go back to sugar, what is the best sugar to use?
Re: Sugar and Sugar Substitutes
The best replacement for sugar is stevia and its actually good for you! www.stevia.com you can also find great information in this thread:

Love stevia and honey both. Don't like baking with stevia though. I stick with plain unrefined sugar for that.
Re: Sugar and Sugar Substitutes
I'm a raw honey girl. If you get honey that is local to your area, it will help fortify you against allergic responses from the local flowering plants. Worth an extra few calories any day! Also, honey tends to be more sweet than regular sugar so you don't need as much. I'd say at the end of the day, your honey will last longer and be about the same caloric content.
Also, maple syrup for a treat. Yumyum!

Thanks for that. I occasionally suffer mild hayfever, and I already eat honey, so I'm going to switch to local stuff and see if that makes a difference.

If I could have honey around without chugging the whole bottle - I'd use honey in my coffee and tea. I love the 'taste' of honey - it has a flavor different from just sugar though, so it's probably not a good substitute.....
Try to eliminate as much sugar and wannabe-sugar as you can. If you absolutely feel you must have it, probably stevia?
Re: Sugar and Sugar Substitutes
I use liquid stevia to sweeten my tea and it works great. ((I prefer the liquid over the powdered stuff)) Its natural, has 0 calories, and doesn't affect blood sugar. Stay away from those other fake ones like aspartame and splenda
Other good sweeteners: honey, pure maple syrup, agave nectar, pure cane sugar. Plus the less sugar/sweet you eat the more sensitive your taste buds will become to sweetness and you will need less and less to think it tastes good

Honey isn't as bad as refined sugar, honey doesn't cause a insulin response like table sugar. If you look at the glycemic index honey is lower on the chart. I love honey & was taking it in everyday as my sweetener when I was dieting.
