Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
I have a friend who is extremely tech minded and builds websites, hosts, does all that websitey stuff for some high profile companies. Chatting to him today about making a simple site, i admitted that it will be adult themed and for that reason i won't use his services but would appreciate his advice on who to use to make. host the site for me, what is possible etc. He assured me that his work is 100% confidential, and told me he actually has some customers who run porn sites. I have said thanks but no thanks, but i am really tempted as he is really good at what he does and i think he's genuine when he says it is totally confidential. BUT this guy knows the large majority of my friends, like over 40! It wouldn't bother me if i thought he were whacking off to it himself, but all my friends finding out what i do is a pretty horrifying thought. Is it worth the risk?
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
NO! Don't do it. Your friends will find out. He will tell someone. I promise. :) xx
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
He may have good intentions, but what if he tells someone he thinks he can trust? He says to them "Katie is making an adult website shhhh don't tell ANYONE, she would kill me if she knew I said this"
The friend he tells swears to secrecy but decides the secret is too juicy to keep to himself, so he "confides" in yet another friend, who tells a friend who tells another.... Next thing you know your friends are all knowing what you do.
If you don't want them to know, then do not do business with your friend.
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
Don't risk it. There are lots of great web designers out there, and even better you could just put in the time/energy it takes to learn some things yourself. It may be challenging at first but it pays off huge in the long run to be autonomous.
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
um, am I missing something? You already told him you are shopping for a designer for an adult themed site. If he's the type to blab, that in iteself is something for him to possibly gossip to all of your mutual friends about. You might as well let him go on ahead and do some work for you.
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
I just said adult themed s in topless modelling photos. They already know I model so that doesn't concern me too much. But there's a big diff between lads mags and this lol.
Thanks girls, you pretty much confirmed what i was thinking anyway. I'm away for a week now so got time to mull it all over xxx
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
I'm getting my bf to make me one - kind of anyway. But that is different. My bf knows everything about me anyway - it is different from someone who is just a friend.
I'd say no. It doesn't seem like you are good enough friends with him. I mean maybe you're good friends but you'd have to be like best best friends for this to work, I think.
Hire someone else who you don't know! :P
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
I'm taking this opportunity to say: no matter who builds your site, YOU should buy the domain yourself. Do NOT let anyone else buy it for you because then that person will control it and you can't do shit about it. Trust me on this. I have seen more people fucked over by letting a web developer buy the domain than I care to count.
Whoever controls your domain controls your website. Make sure that person is YOU.
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
Nope. Do it yourself.
Use Host Gator. I pay 15 bucks a month for EVERYTHING. :)
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
I agree with the other girls. Do it yourself or hire someone to do and have them sign a confidentiality agreement. If you absolutely MUST have your friend do it, get them to sign a confidentiality agreement and an ownership contract so he can't steal your property. And definitely host it and buy the domain yourself. It should cost you <$25 to get started and a recurring $10-15/month.

I pay $120/year for unlimited hosting, lots of freebies and even private domain registration is included. That works out to $10/month. And when they say unlimited hosting, they mean UNLIMITED. I can add all the additional domains I want to my same hosting account, at no extra charge. If I buy new domains I only have to pay the $10/yr which INCLUDES free private WHOIS registration.
If you sign up for a new hosting account with them, they give you a FREE domain for 1 year. When I signed up, I could even try it for a full month for free, before they charged me anything.
I <3 Dreamhost. Best hosting site EVER!

Yeah my bf uses Dreamhost for his stuff. He said I can build a website on there too if I want ... I'm thinking on it :P Maybe!
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
This is what contracts are for.
Even great friendships can be ruined by doing business, no matter what that business is.
If you use him, then sit down and hash out all the terms and payments. Most webmasters are fickled people. Many do say they are just friends, but when it comes down to it they are still men. Men live in a fantasy world. He will sooner or latter expect SEX! I dont care if your married or have a boyfriend he is friends with. He will flip out and fuck you over when his fantasy doesn't come true.
I say this after hearing that same story over the past 12 years over a 100 times. 100% of webmasters have expected sex on the side. You have no idea how many adult site owners, webmasters, photographers, videographers get into this biz with the fantasy of all the girls fucking them as a bonus.
You say it is a topless site as if they will see it as more mainstream. It is porn. Pretending it is glamour modeling is the delusion we feed ourselves. Jackoff material is jacking off material.
Plus, not to be the joy kill. But how many just topless sites are there on the web that make money? NONE!
So I dont know what you expect money wise from this venture. If he charges you $1500 to build it out. This is the typical price for an adult site. May be a year before you make that money back. Meanwhile you will have to keep dishing out money for outfits, locations, photographer and such to keep updating it.
Will you be updating it yourself? Or will he be doing it? How much is he going to charge you a month to do that?
How are you going to market the site?
What about payment processing?
Chargebacks?
Tube sites?
Hackers?
I have owned a solo site for over 6 years. Used to make $10,000 a month, now in this economy $2000. Still I have to update it. I still have to pay money for shoots. My cost have NOT cheapened, but the money I make is almost not worth it.
You need to seriously do a cost analysis.
Most men do NOT join a NEW website. They wait a year for it to have enough content on it.
How many sets are you going to start if off with? Have you already invested the time and money to do them?
If it is going to be just a pic site then don't bother, those do NOT make money anymore. This isn't 20 years ago, men expect alot more for their money.
Seriously look at your body type. Then go see how many sites have girls just like you on them. Your competition is Bang BRos, Reality Kings, Porn Pros, every tube site. Why join your site? These are legitimate business questions, not dissing you or your looks. That is the market. Why join a solo girl site for $10, $15, $20 when they can join a site like Naughty America and get 1000s of girls and scenes. Even then Naughty America has cut its shooting to more than 1/2.
Major porn companies are NOT making money anymore. Why do you think you will?
Just want you to look at this from all aspects. Reality. Dont spend the time, energy or money without figuring out the market.
I had many tell me that I could never run a successful solo site at one time. But I looked at the market and still went for it. Happy I did so. Dont get me wrong. You can be a success, but dont assume it will be easy. Dont assume that it wont cost money or alot of time.
How are you going to get traffic?
Just because someone knows how to build a site, does NOT make them qualified to be good in traffic.
www.cozyacademy.com www.cozyfrog.com www.ynot.com www.gfy.com used to be good resources for those looking to build an adult site.
There are programs like www.southern-charms.com or the dreamnet network for girls looking to try the solo thing out. I suggest those to get your feet wet, before building a site out.
Good Luck,
Sam
Re: Is it ever worth letting a friend make your adult website?
I definitely agree with Sam on this one. After spending the money myself to set up my site in 2010 which even then member sites were beginning to make a decline but more thriving than now, I ended up taking my solo site elsewhere. Southern Charms & Dreamnet Network are great for developing great converting traffic and long time retention of memberships which is just as important as initial joins. There are also more independent methods such as Model Centro or Adult Member Sites which are full member website services that offer everything you need. You just upload the content, customize the design and add the features you want to have available. They take a % but it is completely self managed and you are in full control. (Read the terms of service thoroughly)
Just my 2 cents. As for hosting, I use MoJo Hosting (ask for Natalie) they are awesome for adult sites.

I usually don't mind when people bump old threads because often times they have useful information that many may have overlooked. But not to spam affiliate links. You even just admitted that you're not going to use the Adult Members Site HERE. Get involved in the community. Use your signature.

No problem. That wasn't it's intended purpose, but the links have been removed.
