Money is the Most Important Thing in Life
Arguments in Favor:
- Everything in modern society is based on money. As the saying goes, money makes the world go around.
- Parents object to their daughters' marriages unless their future sons-in-laws have jobs with good prospects.
- Many young people marry for money rather than love. Security is more important than happiness.
- Some people in Shanghai would even trade their self-esteem for money.
- Materialism influences education, too. Students acquire knowledge not for its own sake, but for a bigger wage.
- Students choose business courses rather than liberal arts for the sake of earning big money in the future.
- Very few people want to be teachers because teaching is not a lucrative profession.
- More emphasis is put on material life than on spiritual life in modern society. People do anything in their power to earn money to buy their houses, furniture, cars, etc.
- People are trained to be acquisitive from an early age and are not considered successful unless they make good money.
- People spend most of their lives struggling frantically to keep up with their neighbors.
- Wealthy nations can succeed by offering their poorer talented neighbors bigger salaries.
- Financial rewards for pop stars make many people envy them.
- A desire to earn more money is nothing to be ashamed of.
- Deng Xiao-ping said, "To get rich is glorious."
- Being poor is not very much fun.
- Being rich allows you to do what you want.
- If you are rich, many people want you for a friend.
- It is easier to marry well if you are wealthy.
- Being wealthy allows you to enjoy life to the fullest.
- The man who has the money makes the rules.
Arguments Against:
- Too much wealth leads to disaster. Murder or kidnapping might occur when big money is involved.
- There is a marked reluctance among people to work long hours for money. Many people desire to have a rich and interesting life is thwarted by their quest for money.
- Money corrupts. The more money you have, the more you want.
- Success and wealth often earn you envy and even hostility, which ruins good human relationships.
- Some young people reject materialistic values. They are motivated by their interest in work.
- Some people think it is vulgar to be always after money. They give away their money to less fortunate people.
- Some devoted teachers consider teaching a noble career and are not demoralized by their low salaries.
- There is now a return of interest in the humanities, which arouse people's academic interest. Money is obviously not the sole interest to these people.
- There exist many volunteer organizations, such as neighborhood communities in China, people involved in work without a reward.
- What scientists and engineers want is often better conditions or work rather than more money.
- The love of money is the root of all evil.
- Some Chinese officials are corrupted by the love of money and the power it brings.
- Wealth often brings out the worst in people.
- Wealthy people are not always the happiest.
- When you are rich it is hard to tell who is your real friend.
- Many people try to kidnap and steal from the wealthy.
- You must spend a lot of time to protect your wealth.
- The wealthy spend too much time trying to get wealthier.
- With much wealth simple things lose their pleasure.
- The pursuit of money causes some to neglect their children.
Thoughts? I got this from doing some random web surfing today.

Low stress leisure time is a lot more important to me than money...

Re: Money is the Most Important Thing in Life
The most important thing to me is love. I could be rich, but if I didn't have my family and SO, I'd be miserable.

Re: Money is the Most Important Thing in Life
Love this quote:
Money can't buy happiness but poverty can't buy shit.
Greed is good on a case by case basis.
Is it what I'm all about? Not really.
Also why is that men are allowed to make and love money but when a woman does it, it's frowned upon?

I know right?? and even if the woman is a hard worker and she loves money they call her a gold digger. :S
Anyways! To me the most important thing is not money! The most important thing to me is when I cuddle with my dog! :)

Low stress leisure time is a lot easier to get when you are not stressing about money :)

Yes. It's a lovely dream to not care about money at all and think that "spiritual wealth" is the most important thing, but the sad reality of our society is that you must have money to survive halfway comfortably. Money buys you a roof, food, clothes, fun. I've never seen a homeless person begging on the street and looking like they were enjoying themselves. I also know few people who happily give to charity when their own financial situation is ridiculously tight. I think it's just like everything else - moderation. You need some to live, but you shouldn't overdo it to the point of corruption.

I love making money but its not what brings me happiness.

Re: Money is the Most Important Thing in Life
I've read of several studies on money and happiness that show that once a person has enough money to live a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle (all your bills are paid on time and you're not worrying about 'making ends meet'), no amount of extra money provides an increase in happiness. So if you don't have enough money, having more will increase you rhappiness. Once you have enough, it's not going to make you feel happier to be rich. I'd like to find out from personal experience though. :)

in the modern world we are conditioned to place money high up your life priorities. spiritual wealth can help you break this notion and help you rearrange your life priorities...

When people are old and looking back on their lives........nobody ever says, "I sure wish I spent more time at work making money and less time with my family and friends"

They do if they had crazy family and terrible choice in friends. So yes, I wished I would have spent more time focused on getting myself ahead.

Are you old? Near the end of your life?
Or are you assuming that you are never going to make worthwhile friends...and going to keep choosing a bad man for a significant other for the rest of your life?

If you were able to spend time with your family, you probably made enough money to live comfortably. And I'm sure there have been people who sacrificed career for family and had some regrets.

Re: Money is the Most Important Thing in Life
Money is not the most important thing in life, but having it sure makes life easier.
And money can't buy happiness, but it sure makes misery a lot nicer.

I don't know, really? What if you got paid a 20k a month but you had to work 16 hours a day, 6 days a week, and your job was scrubbing toilets in a mental hospital?
I mostly agree with you that money is a huge key to being happy...it's not 100% necessary, but it sure helps....but I don't think it can automatically make you happy.

If I had a lot of money, why would I be scrubbing toilets?

Re: Money is the Most Important Thing in Life
I'm not happy unless I am working and making money. Perhaps it has more to do with usefulness than money? I've had a job since age 12...periods of unemployment drive me batty. I always have to be doing something. But I dont like doing it unless it will make me money somehow, lol.

I thought they called women gold diggers who only dated and married men to get their money rather than working hard themselves. Your comment makes no sense.

I'm exactly the same. Now I work about 45 hours a week and make great money. Its pretty consistent and a lot less traumatic than stripping. I got really depressed when I wasn't working for a while 2 years ago. Right now I'm not worried about money AT ALL and no matter what's happening in life, I'm not depressed because I have the freedom and security to do what I want.
That is VERY POWERFUL.

You wouldn't HAVE it, you'd have to do that to earn that much. 20k a month is a nice wage, but you'd have to keep working to earn it.
Like I said, I mostly agree with you...but I know for a fact that it doesn't solve ALL problems. It just makes the ones you have easier to deal with.
