I am thinking about going indy because I had a horrible experience with a "so-called" agency. I was wondering what are the steps to take to screen a client and how do you do it. Also, where do I place my ads at and usually how much does it cost?

Use the Search tool.
I'm in a hurry right now and will come back, but to start go to www.whitepages.com/lookup
Sign up for their UNLIMITED monthly look-up service, it's $2.99/mnth, and billed right to your cell phone bill. You can text any number to them (even cell phone numbers) and they will text you back with the name of the person the phone belongs to, the city and state where said number is registered, and if it's a home phone (landline) business number or cell. You wont get a hit on every number you plug into it (it will come back with "no information available"), but I would say it's probably about 60/40. You always need to back that up with google (google is your friend!) and I'll come back and explain more later. That's a great starting point though! Good Luck!
Oh, and like LadyXplicit said, research the threads here, there is some awesome advice on these boards :)
Oh, and one more thing, if you are screening someone and their info is not matching up, don't see them!!! Or if they give you a hard time about asking "too many questions" don't let them con you into seeing them!!! Guys will say anything....don't fall for their bullshit!!!
Please don't be so desperate for cash you lower your screening standards "just this once"
Don't!!!! "just this once" could be very dangerous...and you know what...FUCK THEM!!!!
Your life and safety should ALWAYS be of utmost importance!
This is some of the best advice you will get here. The nuts and bolts of how to screen are certainly important but the most important thing to remember is never to do anything out of desperation. My ATF escort has been at it, off and on, for about fifteen years. She got busted once way back when she started simply because she worked for a guy who was a greedy a-hole and wasn't careful. What she learned back then is her mantra and has kept her safe ever since. "Don't be lazy and don't be greedy"
good luck and stay safe.
^That's really weird, lol. I've either gotten an exact match to the first and last name I was given, or it didn't match at all. Once in awhile I will get the "no information available"
Either way (even if the info given matches) I still always do more research. I would never get a match and just leave it at that. I need proof positive everyting matches every which way. I like to use this method as a starting point. The results I get using this method determines my next move. I don't rely on it as a means to an end.
So, if I were screening you and got those results, that would tell me to stop right there, and not to waste anymore time trying to screen in other ways, especially with the name given to me. I would be calling you back to request more information and go from there.
I think it's a great staring point that saves me alot of time. Everybody does things differently and that's cool, whatever works. I was just sharing what works for me :)
Here's a good screening thread:
