Okay so I don't really know and after spending hours googling it, here's the conclusions I've come to... but I'm not an expect, just curious.
IMO no, they do not work/are a joke. Think about it - a lotion that's going to change a biological process like that would be considered a drug and be FDA regulated, not sold at $45334987 dollars by someone earning $8/hour (trying to get the commission from the sale of the product). Tanning lotions are serious moisturizers, bring your own heavy moisturizer and its exactly the same thing.
[QUOTE=Kisca;2195423]- Do the tan color lasters lotions work, or could I use regular lotion after tanning to maintain the color ? [/uote]
Yes, they work but yeah, a moisturizer would do exactly the same thing. It just reduces the rate at which you lose the top layer of your skin, which in turns means your tan is visible longer.
I like the Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream.
I am with Beckatron. When I tan I use the best one in the house and tan with or without the crazy lotions. If you do want a lotion buy it on Amazon. About 70% cheaper in most cases. I think tanning lotions with bronzers are horrible. They make me think I tanned when I didn't. That may be what is happening to you. Five minutes twice a week seems like absolutely nothing.
I like the Clarins tanner, too, but I hate that you have to stick your hand or use the scooper in the tub. I like Xen-Tan a lot, but it seems that their formula is inconsistent. Deluxe Bronze develops in three hours for a quick tan and it has a color guide. The develop time is the majority of the reason why I love it. I just bought a 10 dollar bottle of Jergens three day glow in the darkest shade. I like to put it on before bed and wake up DARK. I think some skin shades would have problems (orange) with that though.
I need to hire someone to put lotion on me everyday. I am soooo bad at it.

Ladies, you HAVE to try this cheap shit I bought the other day at Sally's called Quick Tan by Body Drench. I swear it's better than some of the personalized airbrush tans I've had done! Soooo dark and goes on so evenly, and lasts forever! And when it does come off, it fades off evenly like a natural tan!
As far as indoor tanning lotions, only ONE is worth a damn, IMHO. It's called Torch by Supre. It's a tingle lotion, but will darken you like crazy when combined with a tanning bed, it blows away all the other ones, even the $100 ones, trust me I've been there done that!
I tan once or twice a week...in the strongest bed they have...and I use this tanning lotion from walmart! haha.
I used to use bohemia...and I would order it from ebay. But I dont see to much of a difference between that and the cheap shit.
I tried tingle before. And it freaked me out....so I took a shower...and it made it worse. then I found out that water like reactivates it! ugh
Yes tinglers will make you SO dark! They are the only lotions worth the money, in my opinion. I've used Bombshell by designer skin before and it almost works too good, I have to use it very sparingly or I'll get too dark. I feel weird getting into a bed without any lotion on so I buy my lotions cheap on Amazon. I haven't tanned indoors this summer, kinda weaned myself off of it but I'm sure I'll go a few times this winter. Queen by designer skin is a good basic one, it's a cream oil so it's super moisturizing.
Hmmmmmm....I might have to go back and try this tingle stuff again if you all swear by it. Do you put the tingle lotion on your face? How long does it take that tingle feeling to wear off? Last time I used it...and the only time I used it...and this was a few years ago...I felt so damn itchy!
Thanks I bought the Queen one! I was thinking of Bombshell but worried about the tingle factor... I dont notice much difference in whether it working or not.
Another question.. Is there an actually difference between the tanning beds? The lady was trying to convice to buy the pricest package since the bed is a bronzing bed and the rest are either low or high pressure :S
yes, there is a difference in the beds. some will make your more pink while others (the more expensive ones) will make you more brown. the basic beds actually help boost melanin production, though. so if you get the expensive package, you'll get the best results if you occasionally tan in the basic bed too.
and lotions do matter a ton. if you don't want to spend the money for a tanning bed lotion, at least use some coconut oil or something to moisturize before you tan, since moisturized skin tans better anyways.
bronzers suck. i hate them. most lotions are filled with bronzers. you'd be better off using a gradual self-tanner at home. they're cheaper, and you have a better chance to apply them. at the tanning salon, you've got to rush to get the lotion on before the bed starts, then it'll sweat away in some places once you start tanning. you can get splotches, streaks, too-heavy application on thicker skin, orange hands and nails. not to mention that it'll come off faster from places you shave and look uneven. read the ingredient list. if it has dihydroxyacetone, don't waste your money.
there are good lotions that really do help you tan better, though. i'm not sure how they work exactly, but they really do. i've never used tingle lotions, but i've heard they're amazing if you can handle them. a lot of salons don't even carry them anymore, though. if you want a good lotion without tingle, just look for the more intense ones that have zero bronzers/dha. the basic, low-level lotions are crap. maybe they're good for people just starting out, i don't know. if you've got any color already, they're about as good as jergens.
but you shouldn't really bother with a salon. buy your lotions online. it's so much cheaper.
I wouldn't recommend using a tingler until you've already established a good base tan, it can be pretty intense. Sometimes I'll just mix it with my regular lotion to dilute it a bit.
Yes, the higher level more expensive beds work better, but it's not necessary to use them all the time. I just have a cheap membership at my tanning salon and bought a package of higher level beds. I only go in the higher level bronzing beds occasionally to brown out all the melanin I've acquired from doing some of the lower level ones.
I used to use the basic....but noe I upgrade to the strongest one bc it feels so damn good. It has made me darker too. I still use the basic one too. Just to mix it up. I think mixing works well
It's hardcore, I'm not going to lie, especially Torch. If you have fair skin, definitely dilute it!
So I got my base tan, went into a high pressed bed for 15 mins, got brunt sllightly, but now it settled and I love the color.
Can I use cocoa lotion before I go into the lay down tanning bed? Im worried it will break the arylic
Thanks for all the suggestions! Im buying 2 lotions online atm.. So much cheaper! Going to get a tingling one and a regular one! I looovvveee tanning, but don't want to get much darker anymore.
^ i think the problem for the beds is when lotions include spf. if you aren't going to use indoor tanning lotion, the safest bet would probably be to moisturize with some kind of oil, just straight up oil with no additives. i've done that when i didn't have lotion (money problems or waiting for a shipment to come in), and it's worked ok. doesn't help build the tan up, but it kept my skin feeling nice. i really recommend coconut oil because it smells so good. if you tan without a lotion or oil that's got a nice smell, well, you stink like charred flesh. other people might not know what it is, but they will react subconsciously.
^ which indoor tanning do you suggest ?
^ my favorite got discontinued, but i've really liked "pink pineapple tini" from fiesta sun. it's not amazing, but it's pretty cheap and smells great. only a level 2, though. still, i'll probably get it again unless i come across something better.
the last level 3 i bought gave me great color, but it smelled like axe, and it had silicones in it (dimethicone, i guess). i can't remember what that lotion was called, but the bottle design looked like an ed hardy shirt. silicones are great for soft skin, but they clog razors like whoa. even after thoroughly washing myself with shower gel and a poof, it would still be there. if you shave, you should probably watch out for them too.
I use White2Black or the Obsidian 30x w/ the strongest bed for the full time about 2 a month. I also use the Nivea tinted body lotion mixed w/ the Jergens express tan as my daily body lotion.
The past few weeks I've been using an $8 lotion from Wal-Mart. It's called European Gold. It works about the same as the salon-bought lotions I've used in the past.
