My news article about camming
I know, I know. I kept saying "it'll be up tomorrow" for at least a week, but my editors have been going over it with a fine toothed comb. I actually wrote two stories, and here they are.
I worked really hard on these, but I know not everyone will like them. Feel free to leave your comments, whatever they may be.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped me out. It's been an eye-opening experience.
EDIT: my boss had a suggestion for anyone who'd like to expand on this. On Reddit.com, there is a section of the site called (Ask Me Anything) where different people of note allow people to ask them questions about their lives. If anyone is interested in doing an AMA about camming, PM me. I can quietly set it up.

Re: My news article about camming
Yaay! I love Aria's quote about nobody saying bad things about your sisters but you - that's exactly how I feel about us!
And :D a quote from my stickie made it in! :D
Just wanted to say all that haha I've only read the first one so far, but I like it. I think it accurately portrays how we feel about each other and our jobs.

Re: My news article about camming
i must say it is really refreshing to see some positive light shed on this industry. it's good to see that NOT everyone is looking to exploit sex workers! great job on the article:)

Re: My news article about camming
Cool articles!
I've actually started my own reddit AMA if you'd like to check it out :)

Re: My news article about camming
There articles are great! I love the balance between being realistic that not everything is rainbows and unicorns but also saying it's not the slavish hell-hole that most people think it is.

Re: My news article about camming
^ I agree.
The part about virtual masturbation is scary. I had never thought about the possibility of them creating some kind of "glove" or something that a customer can purchase so that a cam model can "manipulate" it on her end.
I really hope it doesn't come to that, because that would be the line in the sand for me.
Think about it... if that can be made, why can't they make an electronic dildo that can be "manipulated" by the customer so that he's basically screwing the model? I, personally, would not be ok with that, and frankly would find it scary to trust my lady bits to a guy who could be less than a gentleman. With all the guys who have been in my room who just kept saying "harder, harder" over and over, or who were using violent language, I would be afraid to get hurt.
This is scary.

Prepare to be horrified then, babes. Lmao

Re: My news article about camming
^^ Yep, was just about to say, they DO make that. I think there's actually a thread floating around here somewhere about vsex.com. I don't think anyone on here has actually tried it yet.

Re: My news article about camming
Vsex's "live models" is a streamray studio btw.

Re: My news article about camming
Wicked article:) I really appreciate that, as bubblegumbitch and Aurora_Sunset stated, you didn't bring to the topic an agenda of casting our words and experiences to fit a pre-determined trope of 'women in the sex industry'
I was surprised to see my thoughts in your article, happily so :) My one quibble, and perhaps this was something I myself didn't make clear enough, is that I have learned FAR more from the women here than I feel I have yet been able to contribute back, as of yet.
Real talk, and this is more for all of y'all than it is for Lauren, I can't express how lucky I feel to have stumbled across this forum, and all of you who share your lives, experiences and knowledge upon it, and allow me to participate in it
But Lauren, great articles:) From what I know of the other women you profiled, it's obvious that you strove to, and succeeded in retaining the spirit of what we shared with you in your article.
Peace and a wicked week all :)

Re: My news article about camming
That virtual sex thing is in no way new. Ifriends had it years and years ago and it bombed. I think it was called "cyberdildonics".
Guys were not willing to shell out that money for the equipment and also none seemed interested in learning to use it. Major fail.
I think hosts are in way more danger doing XXX shows in free chat with kids watching.

Re: My news article about camming
Lauren,
Thank you for writing these articles! Threw your writings I was able to find this forum. :) I've been looking for a place like this since I started my journey in the adult entertainment industry all the way back in 2006... Again, thank you!

Re: My news article about camming
There's a problem with your article. You write:
"Because they face online harassment—and possible legal repercussions—we are not naming the women or linking to their forum, a place where they often seek refuge. "
OK. That's great. But a few lines down you lift a direct quote from a stripperweb post. A quick Google search reveals stripperweb as the source. It's the very first result that comes up.
Please remove or alter the stripperweb quote, as it is compromising our privacy.

That is EXACTLY how I found this forum!

Re: My news article about camming
^ yes then the quote needs to be altered or removed. I was the one that told her I would not allow a link bank to this forum. Gotta look out for my ladies.
-
Re: My news article about camming
I hadn't even thought of that until Winged Dinghy raised the issue. I answered the same questions as everyone else who participated, and while I was happily surprised that she did include a quote from my post , I'd hate to think that by participating in the article my words cause the site to become a haven for new trolls. While I don't think that Lauren intended to cause any harm, I definitely hope the quote from my post gets removed. I think it was an innocent error on the part of Lauren, that in striving to depict us as we really are, she made the mistake of using a technique which could harm the c/c s/w community, and I do apologize for whatever role I've played in that.
Peace

Re: My news article about camming
I was just thinking how the direct quotes from the forum would make the lack of a link pointless, as anyone can just google the quotes to find the forum.
I really do like the articles though :)

Re: My news article about camming
Here's the thing: even if I just paraphrase it, it'd still include enough keywords that someone who is determined could still use them to find the forum.
If this a real concern, this forum needs to get a robots.txt file on the site to block Google. This site is easy to find on Google already (I found it myself by googling "Cam Girl Forum" and it was on the first page of results).
I think the best protection would be to set up the page so it's no longer indexed by Google. It'll be a lot harder to find and therefore, a lot better protected.
-
Re: My news article about camming
I deleted the quoted post, hopefully that solves the prob

Re: My news article about camming
I just read the article. It's good. I didn't think about someone C&P'ing quotes to find us here though. Good thinking!

Agreed, that would be great, but I think the best and quickest solution for right now would be for you to remove the material that jeopardizes the privacy and security of the community of women you said you want to protect.
I apologize if this sounds terse. But I've been outed before and it was a stressful, unpleasant experience I wouldn't wish on anybody else.
edit: Thank you, loveshooks, for taking it down. I guess it is a non-issue now. But Lauren, it would have been nice for you to offer to revise the article and remove the quote. I think that would have gone a long way toward building trust.
