I believe, by law, every site is supposed to collect that information. Cam sites especially. Photo only sites may be more lenient, but I believe they all still ask for it. If you get a tax ID #, you can usually use that instead, but otherwise you have to give your SS#. They have to protect themselves and check to make sure that you are who you say you are.
Many independent camming (and a handful of content) sites just want your ID / proof of you being an adult to fulfill 2257 requirements. That doesn't mean that they don't report the income by your name/address to the IRS though (which I know was not your question, but given the keyword/title people may wonder).
If you register on (some) websites not based in the US you won't be asked for your SSN since they don't have the same identification system. But they will definitely ask for other forms of identifying info.
One of the most helpful ways to preserve some semblance of privacy is to register to cam sites with a passport since your current address is not listed - and your ID can be passed around if they sell your content to adult content reselling sites.
If you mean which sites won't ask for your personal information at all - ehhh.... don't trust any site that doesn't ask for any kind of personal information. It means they're running illegally, are a scam or are generally not aren't trust worthy.
you'd have to try your hand at camming independently (like 100%, no listing sites, no site where there is an application, nada - just advertising from your own website).
But even then you'll have to register the domain in your name (you can get privacy protection so no one can google/check it, but you'd still need a 2257 notice on your site. and if some lawyer thinks you're doing something illegal or thinks your 2257 info is invalid, your info can be subpenaed, which could end up in public documents if they have a bone to pick). You'll also have to use payment processors and they'll need your information - especially if you're telling the processors you're using it for adult transactions (which you should always do or they can freeze your accounts).
I guess you could do non-adult type camming and not need to have a 2257 notice and request to be paid via emailed gift cards so your info isn't disclosed anywhere specific - but that's ... uhhh not a good idea + still of interest to the IRS / registering as an online business type of issue.
Basically - it is nearly impossible to be 100% anonymous if you're receiving money over the internet for services you provide publicly.
EDIT: Wow, I did a lot of stoner-type rambling in this comment. Sleep deprivation is unsexy.
Camming is a very real job.... its not a secret, nor is it a hobby... your going to have to give up those digits honey.
Thanks for your responses, it sounds like I won't be getting out of giving up my ssn if i want to cam on any of the main sites. I do not have a passport, and my drivers license has my parents home address on it (i no longer live there though). will any of the main sites let me submit my DL with my address blacked out on it? tia
^No, they need that information for their 2257 records.
Your application will be (or should be if the site is professional) rejected.
It is impossible to do online adult work and remain anonymous to the people processing your income/applications - I'm sorry. Sites need to be able to prove that you are a real live person that can be verified as a real live person. They need to for IRS and legal purposes to: 1. stay out of jail 2. keep their earnings. 3. remain legit/credible.
You could always use an old ID with an old address if you have one. As long as it hasn't expired and is issued by some kind of government body.
is there a reason why you are not willing to give up your SSN info?
I was just reading through http://forum.stripperweb.com/showthread.php?t=147389 and it seemed like many girls do not want to give up their socials, and that there are at least a few sites that will accept ID's with address blacked out, just need to figure out which ones they are...
Maybe try European sites. US sites will most likely need the info intact.
If you want to get PAID you need to provide your information. In the US you are considered an Independent Contractor, this is just the same as if you were going to be a licensed massage therapist they are also Independent Contractors, this means that NO TAXES are taken out of your pay, HOWEVER for tax purposes on the companies end and your end, the information has to be giving in order to get your 1099 at the end of the year. You will need the 1099 to file your tax returns. This is as everyone mentioned a LEGAL job, and therefore you are required by LAW to fill out the information required or you won't be able to cam.
On the 1099 note, mfc and sm dont provide these, do they? as they are registered abroad.
edit: mfc does
SM quote "As a Streamate Limited performer, you are considered to be an independent contractor, and all taxes are your responsibility. Streamate Limited is a NON-US company, based in Cyprus - we do NOT send 1099s each year to performers. Please consult the tax requirements in your area for any special requirements. "
if it's a tax issue - you NEED to pay tax. You need to for all sorts of reasons. Not least because, if you want to buy a house, a car, a tv on credit or ANYTHING of value in the future you are going to need to prove your income, and the way to do that for self-employed people is through tax records. Also, it's always nice to stay out of jail :D
Ive only gotten a 1099 form from 2 sites (both content selling and based in the US), you have to file/declare your earnings yourself.
To be fair the OP may be concerned about identity theft when it comes to her SSN. Or someone who reads this may be concerned.
A lot of these sites asks for your SSN without even an SSL certification (you know that little lock symbol) or any kind of indication that the application processing part of their site has any kind of security. I hate that. On average it costs like $100 a year, c'mon cam sites, protect your applicants.
I think Naked.com and Cams.com now have you fill out W9s despite being based in Cyprus. Makes sense, I'm sure the IRS will crack down on SM eventually - they do have a lot of US performers.
OK - why Cyprus? Anyone know what the deal is with mega sites and Cyprus? I've always wondered this.
I have been camming for almost 4 years, I wouldn't worry about what the girls in that thread are saying, I have provided my license and social and I have been fine. **knock on wood**
But seriously, I mean it is what it is, if you want to make money, it's NOT that big of a deal. Especially if you just go to the sites that are good. Streamates, Myfreecams, and Adultwork.
I worry more about a next door neighbor stalking me, or creep at the grocery store, rather then companies that have been in business for years now. If there was such issues with the big sites, I sure as hell haven't heard about it, so I wouldn't worry. Just my opinion though.
I've never had a problem with identity theft except for a stolen credit card number in a local restaurant and once in a small Chicago store. Fortunately my bank caught both of them before I lost money.
Never had problems with any major cam site.
I think you are more in danger when you hand your card and ID to a waitress than online.
Try a site out of your country. I'm in Canada and registered with sites from the US and have never had to give out my social insurance number (SIN) which is kind of the same thing I think :p
that was alot of help .)
I remember someone posted about getting an EIN number. I just couldn't find that thread. Would be nice getting a number where all of my screen names could be taxed under instead of my real name. Can't find that thread though. Someone said it was easy and received one within 48 hrs online.
I have an EIN from the time I opened up my vanilla site over 1 year ago... I wanted to seperate business from personal
We require SSN for US resident only
Here ya go, it's really easy.
