Re: How to Tell My Family
I personally have told my parents and my sister, but my family is accepting of it. Usually when people ask, I try to down play the conversation as if it's really not something that I want to talk about, and others hopefully pick up on that.
Your cover story is a good one, just stick with that. If you start earning more and your family notices, tell them you supplement your income with online stuff.
And actually a really great story for when I want to confuse the people who ask - Say you're getting your money from SecondLife!! It's a game that pays out real money and has tons and tons of stuff you can do. It DOES have a famous adult industry along with it but that's just part of the whole gaming world and if anything adult related comes up on searches for Second Life you can just say you don't mess with that stuff.
I dunno. I'm sure we all face this dilemma. I'm just either honest or avoid it or try to get it my lying over with as quickly as possible. I've been known to suddenly get offline after my friends ask me if I have a job. :P
Re: How to Tell My Family
I say that I do online customer support. My side of the family knows what I really do but my husbands side does not. They know I work from home so I just tell them that I do live chat support and email support for an adult company. My mother in law lives with us so I needed a way to cover up "streamates limited" being on the envelope in case she were to google it, which she probably never will.
She's also really hard of hearing so at night I just say "Okay I'm going to work" and I lock the door and she has never suspected a thing. She can barely hear you when you are standing in front of her talking. She knows I work the "night shift" lol so it works out pretty good for me.
I think your story is good. Stick to that! :) I have found in the past if you say something that sounds kind of complicated they won't inquire into it and just be like "oh... ok!"

Re: How to Tell My Family
I know you have said you don't want to, but I would always be honest with family. One lie just leads to another, and another, and eventually you will be caught out. Most families I know would be happier thinking that their daughter was camming than that they were lying. And its not like acquaintances, these people really matter in your life.
The other question is - how do you know that your dad/brother/mom/sister aren't customers on these sites? I know you would hate to think it, but how much worse would it be to have your DAD drop in on a show and see you doing yourself????

This is a good point... it does happen... that is how my brother found out that I had a solo site back in the day! LMFAO! They all know now but MAN that was W E I R D.
Re: How to Tell My Family
^^^ AAAAHHH! That is my worst nightmare!!! That must have been awful.....yeesh!
One of the reasons I always tell people - I don't know how I would handle it if someone in my family saw what I did.....*shudder

I don't agree with this "always be honest with family" thing. A lot of people say that ... I don't agree. I have heard of way too many girls whose families won't talk to them after that. I would never tell my parents.
Yeah if my dad found out that'd be weird but whatever. I'll deal with it if it happens.
Re: How to Tell My Family
I say I'm an online counsellor, which means of course I can't discuss anything because of confidentiality rules. Re telling your family - be sure because once you have, you can't 'untell' them. Is there a need to tell your family? Again, if you fear them finding out by seeing you in action maybe it's best they know, or you could block their locations from viewing you? But then there's no guarantees in this line of work. Hope whatever you end up doing works out xoxo
Re: How to Tell My Family
I can block there state and I have. And our relationship is on the rocks right now. I'm more estranged from them, but they pester me on facebook.
My family is weird. They would prefer me to be homeless than a webcam model. No exaggeration. Anyway, I have covered my bases and still have to see if this is a viable money-maker.

I use Second Life as a cover-up often. I am on there as an escort and also sell clothing and stuff, but it's not usually enough money to justify doing that full time. When I make good money camming and someone asks, I'll tell them that business has been booming on SL. Only problem with that is it's hard to explain to folks what the heck SL is lol.
*side note* I've found Second Life to be an excellent way to get new cam customers and sell photo sets and video clips. A majority of my regulars are from there.

Can't you say you're taking on some freelance work from various wedding and special events photographers and editing their videos together as well?
