Hello everyone and question about laptops
Hi to all the members of this site. I'm a newbie and want to say that you guys offer great advice and to see everyone come together is awesome. Well with that being said I have a somewhat silly question...how many ppl can you guys hold in your room and w what kind of laptop? I've seen some of the top models on sm hold 100 ppl w no prob while my poor laptop starts freezing if more than 10 ppl come in lol. I also read the thread about laptops but no one really specified how many ppl the laptop could keep up w so I decided to start a new one geared towards that. So yeah thanks in advance. I know I totally need a SERIOUS upgrade though bc soon as to many ppl come in I'm frozen :(

It has nothing at all to do with how many people are in your room. The amount of people in your room depends on your popularity. It will not affect how fast or how slow your laptop runs at all. What affects your stream is:
1.) your internet. you need a fast internet speed. the faster the better. you may have to pay extra for this service
2.) your laptop. obviously the new the better, and generally, the more expensive the better (fast processor speed, more memory, etc.). a midrange laptop seems to do fine as long as you don't split more than like 3 sites at a time
3.) the amount of memory you are using on your computer with downloaded programs, etc.
4.) the amount of programs you have open and/or running at one time
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
Thanks. I'm aware that it depends on your popularity I just wanted the laptop to have the ability and capability to hold that many ppl. So I guess I'll just buy a couple of laptops and see which does better. Right now mine only have a single core which is why it freezes when a certain amount of people come in. So maybe I'll try dual next.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
I initially had problems with freezing which hapened whether I had 6 or 200 people in my room. I changed ISP...my upload speed is now slower but the connection doesn't keep dropping out. If you can find somewhere else to cam you'll be able to ascertain if it's your ISP or not.
The freezing was such a frequent occurence that it became a game in my room...laying token bets on when the next freeze would happen!
I'm currently looking at new laptops...there is a thread somewhere which I seem to remember reccommended Acer, but I can't remember which models.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
I don't recommend Acer, I recommend HP (or a Mac if you can afford it!).
Make sure your internet connection is good ... that is an important thing to. Any decent laptop you buy right now will be pretty good for you I would think. I've had over 100 people in my room and my laptop is a three and a half year old HP Pavilion ... I'm buying a more current HP though cuz this one is dying lol, but it is still awesome for webcamming!
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
welcome to the forum:)
this thread provided me with alot of info when I was buying my new laptop. Asus is a wicked brand, and a few others are discussed as well
Innes and Glamour are right about internet speed though, even the best comp can't compensate for a crappy connection
peace and happy camming:)
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
I have a $400 Toshiba (got it for $200 used heehee) and it's NEVER acted up on me. My computer however is... bless it's heart. It must be 10 years old and I love it, but it barely loads some days.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
i recently bought a new laptop and i love it. i wanted to get an asus or toshiba after reading the threads here but the ones with an intel core i5 were out of my price range, so i went for the lenovo ideapad V570-1066AJU - it has the core i5 with 6gb ram (which i'm planning to max out to 8 eventually) and it works great for camming. the installed security software (facial and fingerprint recognition) are known to cause freezing and other problems so i just uninstalled them, and i don't use it for much besides work and a little internet browsing, but i can splitcam on it and run other programs at the same time with no problem. it doesn't overheat or overload the cpu like it did my old computer. i'd definitely recommend it.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
Don't get a mac, most cam programs will only run on windows.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
new macs are capable of running windows - that's what i'd do if i had enough money for a mac, lol.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
Basically just get a mac/apple computer. Preferably macbook pro. Why? Alot of people will tell you things like
mac and the new windows computer are basically the same speed these days etc.
You don't really need a mac cause its mainly for people who do graphic design and music production.
And that they are mad expensive and not user friendly. All of these things are false (except the expensive part).
In my observations the faster windows computers get, mac computers get twice, even three times faster. No exageration. The 2011 macs come with quad cores. Basically thats 4 processors in the computer.
I have never had to put virus protection software on any of my macs (and I have 3 of them). I have used mac computers for almost 10 years. You don't get annoying pop ups or viruses.
I use to use windows computers and compared to those, mac computers are very user friendly and simple.
As far as the price of the macs you can go to the apple store page and on the left hand side you should see a link called refurbished. Click on this and you will see mac computers there that are cheaper in price. Yes they have been returned for some reason or another, but then apple puts these computers thru a series of tests and makes sure these computers are fixed properly. Plus you can still buy the applecare 3 year protection plan, that if anything goes wrong you can return it or get it fixed.
Basically do you want a computer that will last you atleast 5 years plus. Or something to get you buy for a year or 2. Comparing a mac computer to a windows computer is like comparing a Bentley to a Ford car.
Hope this helped you.
Re: Hello everyone and question about laptops
Would it even matter if you are using windows on it? I mean if windows has all these bugs or whatever... Would it be that different if you are using that software on a mac computer? I have just heard it can be slow and buggy when trying to run windows on a mac. but what do I know lol.
