traveling to dance
so i live in DC and there arent many good clubs around:'( ,stadium is okay but i have this extreme fear that one day one of my family members will walk in there . DC is so small and i just want to make my money and go my way i dont want the hoodfabulous glitz and glamour. i have been considering going to philly or NYC but i dont have a car right now(i have been hopping to dance and pay for my tuition along with my medical bills and a down payment on a car). has anyone ever traveled outside of there area to dance without a car

Re: traveling to dance
How do you plan on getting to and from the club without a car? Public transportation? Taxi? Car service? These can get quite expensive and depending on the area the club is in, may not be so safe late at night.

Re: traveling to dance
If you really want to travel-dance without a car, you'd probably have to take a bus and plan to stay in the area to work several nights a week for at least a couple weeks to offset costs of bus, motel, and cabs to and from the club. It sounds like it would cost more than it's worth. :-\ If you're worried about your family walking in, maybe try camming for a little while to save up the money for the car, then go back to dancing? Or get a wig and learn some makeup tricks to drastically change your look in the club so there's less chance of being recognized if they do walk in.

Re: traveling to dance
I am from Toronto and traveled alllll over Ontario to dance. It is possible to travel dance without a car but you have to watch your spending way more and do a little bit more planning.
my tips:
- understand light packing. You are probably going to be going from a hotel to work and back so you only really need one outfit / pair of shoes. Maybe bring a nicer outfit in case you do end up going out one night but you're going to be constantly hauling your suitcase around so you don't want it too heavy.
- learn to feel confident with large sums of money on you at any time. I'm not saying to have thousands of dollars on you and feel okay with it but it is possible that it's going to happen. Learn to be aware of your surroundings and find places to stash your money where it would be hard for people to take it without you noticing. Breast pockets with full zippers on your jacket, for example.
- read reviews on hotels before you book there. Don't necessarily listen to everything people say but get a general idea of whether or not it is safe or sketchy. Keep your door locked all the time that you're in it. Don't tell ANYONE where you're staying (not even management... know of another hotel nearby and tell people you are there) especially customers. Don't give the cab company your first name or room number when you call them to get you.
- learn how to choose good seats on buses and trains and learn the routes. Call clubs ahead and ask if they have accomodations for the girls.
good luck!

Re: traveling to dance
great! these are all really good ideas i was thinking about taking megabus to NYC and staying with my friend the weekends that i work. with that being said i think i may have to admit to my friend as to what im doing which isnt really an issue. or maybe it would be better to just dance in not so popular club in DC where not alot of people go. stadium is some what of the magic city of DC.. its over marketed by rappers and the media and its a really high traffic club that EVERYONE goes to .. while i checked out the club i ran into 8 people i used to know both highschool & college people along with family friends.

Re: traveling to dance
^Personally, I'd give the local club a shot first. You never know, it could have big money, and then you won't have such high overhead costs!

Re: traveling to dance
I agree with Shanna Dior...start at a local club, make a little bit of money and THEN you can invest in traveling to dance.
I wrote a series of articles on traveling to Dance
Is it Worth it To Travel
Rules for Traveling Dancers Part 1
Rules for Traveling Dancers Part 2
Not to freak you out...but I've actually run into MORE people I know when I'm in another city...because the people I know don't go to strip clubs when they're home...they go when THEY travel!
