Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I'm wanting to get on a more personal level with my guys and start selling my phone number to send texts and naughty pictures. I'm not stupid enough to give out my real number, so I obviously have to get a new phone.
I looked at the major companies - Verizon, Sprint, ATT, Virgin Mobile. Looks like to get any plan it will be $55+ /month across the board.
Should I go with a Pay-As-You go plan? Or a 2-year contract?
But if I go with V, S, ATT don't they give me a # in my area code? Do not want that.
I heard that Virgin Mobile once-upon-a-time let you change your # to anywhere in the US but I couldn't find that info on the website anywhere. :(
Google voice would be perfect for this but they don't support picture messaging to/from phones yet. So they are out. >:(
I'm also planning on buying my own personal self an iPhone this Christmas....So I was also looking at iPhone/Android Apps that can give you a number to text and send pictures for free. But again, I was wondering if this was safe...as I found out that people can find your location because of some weird iPhone setting.
But I signed up with one text app to try it out and was able to choose my own number. I don't have any experience testing it out though.
So if that would work...this would get me a freebie per month.
So...has anyone done this or have some advice?

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
T-mobile is 50 with unlimted everything.
However if you are only going to do pictures and texts...You can get a phone from most pre paid companies with unlimted texting that includes pictures etc for like 10 dollars a month. I know both T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile offer this.
Pay as you go is probably cheaper in the long run. Well minus buying a descent phone. Depending on the carrier you can get descent nice phones off Craigslist. Make sure if you go that route you get a phone that takes a SIM card.
When I lived in Texas I wanted to get a area code for Minnesota. They were able to do it with no problems. Hope this helps :)

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
With Virgin Mobile you can pick your area code when you set your phone up. It goes by zip code. Just put whatever zipcode in that you want your phone to be from.
Their plans start at $35 a month for unlimited text, pix and web with 300 talk minutes. You can get unlimited everything packages for 50 or 55 a month from them.
I really like the fact that you do pick what zip code you want when you set up your phone, you can tell them you're from anywhere you want. Just when you're setting it up put in a fake address with the zipcode from the area you want and you're all set. 1 of the big perks of doing prepaid :) You can also change your phone number with virgin mobile. It used to be free to do once every 24 hours but they are now charging $10 to change your number, I don't think it is every 24 hours anymore might be a limited number of times a month or something. And if you decide you no longer want to provide this service to the custys you can just stop paying the prepaid fee or change your number ;)

Id think I go for a prepay.... and get an area code not in my area.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I was thinking about doing the same thing Hayden. I have an android phone through T-Mobile, and I use one of those free texting apps (saves on my bill each month). With the app, you can have multiple accounts, and the area code is usually a few states away from where you live. And all you have to do is register with a nickname, they don't need your real one. It's actually pretty handy. I prefer the app over standard messaging.
I still haven't decided whether or not to sell one of the numbers. I'm still mulling it over.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
verizon's cheapest prepaid plan is $45 and it's only 450 mins - don't bother with them. i had them for years. i recently switched to straight talk which is unlimited everything for $45, and i absolutely love it. i bought a cheap samsung slider phone (it's almost exactly like the one i had with verizon and i never had any problems with it in four years of using it) that talks, texts, and takes pictures. it has internet capabilities but i don't use the internet. the only downside with straight talk is i think they lack coverage in some places on the west coast (i'm in the midwest) and you can't call people out of the country. but if you're in midwest or east coast it should work great.
sometimes i use google voice for work texting since i don't really use that number for anything else. but you can't use it to send picture messages, which is the only downside.

I am in the Midwest too. And I know straight talk doesn't work so well here, at least for me it didn't, lol.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
really? where? lol. i'm in kansas (about an hour from kansas city) and it works amazingly well for me.
definitely check their coverage map though, there are lots of areas where it doesn't work well.

Indiana/Kentucky. I don't have them anymore, but when I did, it just wasn't working right for me.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I set up a google voice account the other day for this same thing. Didn't think about the picture messages thing. I guess I could just tell them I don't have picture messages on my phone or something. I would love to figure out a way to have the texts always come to my cell but not the calls. Don't really want to deal with the annoyance of calls ATM.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I got the Text Free App for iPhone. It's great! No need to get a separate physical phone! They can text and call you anytime, best when it's with wifi instead of 3g, that's why it's free and you get a new separate number! I even have my ring tone set to "ka-ching" to let me know that its a custie texting and not a regular call! :)
And it works GREAT with International calls! It's a win win!

I have lived semi close to that area & I have used the boost mobile prepaid phones without a single coverage problem at all... its like 50 a month unlimited everything but it also goes down 5 bucks every 6 months that you add money to keep it on... it can get as low as like $35 a month...

The whole thing seems like it would be annoying to me.
I'd have to charge so much for that annoyance nobody would want to pay it, lol.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I totally want to do this now, but I have noooo idea how much I would charge for my number. No calls, just text and pics. Then I gotta figure out payment...Maybe I could say buy something off of my wishlist and get my number or something. Hmmm

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
Check out these pay by the day plans for t-mobile. $1, $2 & $3/day.
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans
I realllly want a phone for work but still deciding what to do... And I have heard of girls being paid and personally been offered hundreds of dollars just for my phone number.
I am not crazy about the idea of adding an extra $50-60/month to my current bills AND sign a contract, but if you were to have your phone turned on like 5 days a wk, 20 days a month, that's $40 for unlimited talk txt & data (at 2g speed) I dunno it's only $10 less but.... I dunnooooooooooooooooooo...... Or else they have the $1/day plan which is unlimited text and calls for 10c/min.

*bumping this thread because it's a great thread*
Hayden, this thread has inspired me to re-consider buying a prepaid phone. I might go get one from the store before I get my son off the bus, and I'm sitting here with a notebook trying to figure out what to charge guys on MFC for certain things:
I guess I can offer flirtatious/naughty texting and a week of 10/15 minute phone calls for ____ tokens (in a single tip). Or make a raffle out of it. I was thinking of doing something special for Black Friday...maybe this can be it.

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I still have no freaking clue what to charge for my number LMAO. I got the text free app on my iPhone to use for this and got a number in an area code far from where I live.

Here's an alternative solution. MyPhoneSite.com just added text chat (with video optional for either chatter) to the suite of tools they have, and they're adding a pay per minute function to it. It also has a file sharing feature (didn't test it yet) that can be used within the live chat session.
I'll have to see if the text room interface works on my smartphones when I get some time later. That will really make that chat feature mobile and more like texting. I tested it via computer though and it's cool. Anyway, you can send pics and charge guys for text chat sessions using that system and, of course, you'd have the option to do cam shows with it too.
BTW, MyPhoneSite is really innovating where Niteflirt left off long ago. The platform is impressive as far as what all can be done with it. You can sell so many services and products through them. Not sure how their traffic is though. I rarely hear girls mention them.

^ But you have to link a cell phone? Or can you just use a headset/mic?

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I signed up for this site. Takes about 24 hours for your page to be approved. I like what they have to offer, but I don't know if I like the look of my page. The templates are pretty generic. I feel like I am playing Oregon Trail. :/

Is Niteflirt still a good site to work?

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
I decided that I'm gonna use a prepaid phone for MFC purposes. I bought a TracFone the other night (it's what I've used in the past when I temporarily needed a prepaid phone), and I was given a New York phone number after putting in a New York zip code (I don't live in New York...lol). :D
I'm trying to figure out if I should make a raffle out of it (access to my number and other privileges with it), make it a 'highest tip' prize, or do a separate raffle AND separate high tip contest for it?

Re: Selling your phone # & keeping privacy/separate phone
You guys using Texting Apps, have you ever had any trouble with it not working for people in certain countries? I've heard mention of this especially with European countries, but I didn't know if it was a big issue.
:-)
