Where to store photos/videos?
When I'm not dancing, I'm a bit of an amateur photographer/camera hog, and I'm looking for some advice on where to store all the photos and videos I'm constantly taking on my camera - I have thousands stored on my laptop and I'm scared that one day I'll lose them if something happens to it. I have two old laptops stored in the back of a cupboard that are broken, but I'm holding onto in the hope that I'll be able to get to the hard drives at some point and retrieve all the photos off them, and I don't want to risk it happening again with everything that's on my current laptop. I signed up for an account on Photobucket, but you could only upload a small amount without paying for a Premium account. I don't mind paying a fee at all but I want to make sure I choose somewhere good to have permanently. I need somewhere that will let me upload a LOT of pictures and video clips (nothing adult) and has some kind of feature where I can make the pictures visible only to people who I send the link to. Some kind of photo editing options on it would be nice too but not necessary. I've heard of Flickr and Imageshack too, but I don't know enough about it to know what is considered a "good" site for this kind of thing.
Where do you guys store your stuff? Have you had any issues with it, or any pros/cons to certain sites? I also thought about getting something like an external hard drive, but I had a roommate in the past who stored hundreds of full movies on one of them, only for it to get corrupted and her lose everything. It wasn't pretty to watch lol.
Much appreciated!!! :-*
Re: Where to store photos/videos?
I think on CC they were talking about Mediafire..I don't know about it :nor have used it
Re: Where to store photos/videos?
megaupload or mediafire. You can also password protect all files
Re: Where to store photos/videos?
I wouldn't trust to storing them on the Internet...or 'in the cloud' as it's known.
Buy a good 1 Terabyte External USB Hard Drive and transfer them all onto that. It shouldn't cost you much more than $200.00 and it will keep them safe forever.

A 500GB Hard Drive, or lower capacity, will be much less of course.
Re: Where to store photos/videos?
My photos I keep on my laptop and backed up on an external hard drive. Music and films I care less for, so they stay on the laptop.

Currently all my photos and videos are on my computer, taking up MUCHO room. However, I have been looking into get a flash drive just for this purpose as well. They're not that expensive either..
I found this really cute pink one on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/EP-Memory-Capl...=2UV21QAMH89ZK

Re: Where to store photos/videos?
I agree with pussinboots. You can upload them to the internet if you want but as soon as you do its a lot less secure. Not sure if that's important but it's a lot faster and easier to just buy an external drive. I bought this one last year. I have thousands of photos and videos on there and it's not even a third full

But whatever you do don't keep only one copy of them in a single location! I dropped the hard drive I had before. It was on a stool less than a metre of the floor and I caught it with my foot but it completely erased the drive. Luckily I still had them on my laptop. My photos are pricelss to me I literally don't know what I'd do if I lost them
Re: Where to store photos/videos?
Files stored on an external hard drive will provide a measure of redundancy, although you have to remember to back up files (unless you have an automated backup), and like all mechanical hard drives, an external one can fail at any moment and is prone to shock damage.
USB flash drives are really easy to lose, they are for the most part poorly made, and like the external hard drive, you either have to remember to backup files or have an automated backup.
If you really, really want full security, redundancy and access to your files anywhere, a NAS (network attached storage) server that supports RAID 1 (data is mirrored to 2 drives for redundancy) is the way to go. This one and this are two good ones available for under $200, plus the hard drives. Little tricky to setup for a novice but it's really the best way to store important data at home, and extremely convenient.
If you want to go the online storage route, you can get 5GB free storage with Amazon's Cloud Drive (and more very cheaply), and mount your cloud storage like a network drive with Gladinet. Dropbox is another popular service that has it's own tool for mounting your storage like a network drive, but you only get 2GB free. Lastly, Microsoft has a service called Skydrive that's free with 25GB of storage, but you're limited to 50MB size files. I would strongly urge you not to dump your files off onto sites like photobucket, mediafire, etc. where they are publicly linked as a means for storing files. Only use those sites for files you want to share.
Hope this helps.
