opening a US checking account for non US resident
Hi ladies,I live in europe and I'd like to open an online US checking account, I know that some banks offer it for non resident, but some require a deposit of $1000 +, others have high fees, do you know a reliable bank that allow non resident to open a us bank account online ? and that has low fees ?
Re: opening a US checking account for non US resident
With the new US / international 'terrorist anti-money laundering' laws, virtually all US banks ( as well as most foreign banks ) now require that new bank account applicants have their identities verified by appearing IN PERSON with valid ID. US banks and US divisions of foreign banks that offer online checking accounts will typically require a US address, a US social security number, US ID by fax or e-mail etc.
Those that do not enforce such restrictions will require large minimum deposits, charge high fees etc. to 'compensate' them for the additional risks they are taking by allowing a 'non-verified' person to open a US account.

I agree w melonie...
I opened my bank account here in the us yrs ago but i already had my ssn back then.
I m a resident now so it s different but i don t think you could open an account here without a ssn or doing the paperwork in person... I could be wrong but not sure..
Re: opening a US checking account for non US resident
have you tried to get a moneypak/greendot?
go to greendot.com
i opened up a card online to get paid for doing PSO work because i didn't want it going in my normal bank account. with a greendot card, you get a prepaid debit card but you also get a checking acct number so you can receive direct deposits. not sure if this could work for you but it is worth a try...

Sadly, you still need a SSN.

Re: opening a US checking account for non US resident
For UK residents, HSBC and Barclays can open a US account. HSBC cost me just over £100 and took around a month. I already have an HSBC current account in the UK.
Both banks operate in your country, if you have an account with either it may be an idea to ask with them?
The account was a personal account only as I was unable to get a business account at the time.

PJ, does that mean you can accept direct deposits?
Re: opening a US checking account for non US resident
Since your in Europe you have to see which banks offer an online option in Canada we have InG direct, Alley and PC financial.

Probably yes. I originally went in to use it for work (dailypay) once I found they would be monitoring the account for personal use I decided not to use it any further. Its been over a year now so I dont think the account exists anymore.
Will be getting another in the future with Barclays to save with for my trip to the US.

Thank you LAChloe, I have tried months ago to open a greendot, but they said that I am not allowed because they saw that I was accessing from non US IP address, I will try it again now
