Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I've seen it twice now, and I was kind of on the fence the first time, but now I'm pretty damn sure. I love this movie, think its better than the Swedish original, which is odd since I was pretty upset when I heard that David "overrated" Fincher was making a new version.
Noomi Rapace was great as Lisbeth Salander, but Rooney Mara IS Lisbeth Salander. I hope she gets Oscar attention for this.
Do yourselves a favor and watch this! One of my top five films of 2011! (Drive, 50/50, Warrior, Dragon Tattoo, and Attack the Block-- honorable mention: Harry Potter)

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I really don't want to watch it.. I like the original and most american remakes make me want to go into hiding.. Sadly one day I know someone is going to ask me watch the movie and I will have forgotten that they remade it...
-
Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Yeah I understand completely, but I really do think it's worthwhile! I was upset for quite some time about the remake, but then I remembered how much I dislike the Swedish sequels in comparison to the first dragon movie. They need to remake those to do them justice, but they can't just not remake the original. Ah well, if u ever decide to watch the remake I hope u like it

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I'll wait until it hits Netflix. I know everyone was saying the same thing about "Let The Right One In" vs. "Let Me In". I haven't managed to finish "Let Me In" yet. The pacing irks the hell out of me and all the characters seem so flat in comparison to the original. Not to mention they ruin the mystery of the vampire in favor of cheap painfully done cgi.
But perhaps my bias is getting in the way.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I liked all of the swedish films. If I can remember where I put it I was reading the first book.. I will give it a try one day...

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Do they usually dub Swedish movies into English? If so, I would like someone to suggest a few Swedish movies that I can catch on Netflix.

You are not alone! This remake made me so angry. It was absolutely pointless. People were saying blahblahblah it's more true to the book but it wasn't. So much is lost in terms of questions of gender since LMI avoided discussing Eli's gender--unless I'm misremembering. Ugh I get mad just thinking about it.
Though to be fair if I never watched LTROI, I'd probably love LMI

The big ones that came to America in recent years were the Girl with the dragon tattoo series, and Let the Right One in... Dunno any others offhand, sorry. Let me in, the American remake to Let the Right One In is on Netflix instant--watching it now actually to remind myself why I disliked it

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I just saw the movie last night and I LOVED it. The primary reason I went was because Trent Reznor did the music for it, but I ended up very engrossed in it. I've never read any of the books or seen any of the other movies, though. I ended up (unfortunately) sitting next to a bunch of hipsters who were giving a running commentary to each other, and by the end of the movie I was ready to punch them out.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I've been bugging my SO to take me ever since it came out!! Saw the Swedish version, and read all 3 books. Amazing. Glad to hear good things about it, I know people like to complain about remakes but sometimes they turn out well and are interesting to watch. I enjoy comparing the casting, direction, and production. We'll prob go tomorrow since there ain't much to do on xmas day :)

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
^ The original was slow to me....there were exciting parts but I almost fell asleep through most of it as they dragged it out way too long.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I saw it the other night and other than being in lust with the girl I had no idea what the hell was going on in the movie. Maybe it was because I never saw the other one and never read the book.

Oh that sucks--sorry you didn't enjoy it. I actually had the same concerns that you are describing: went too fast, wasn't clear about details, brushed over parts that would confuse newcomers. My friends had some questions after the film about wtf happened, and they'd already seen the originals. I explained as best I could since I am a huge fanatic, but I'm sure it's pretty common to have your same reaction, even from people who have seen the original. And yes, she was soooo hot. Perfect mix of vulnerability, pushiness, dryness, intelligence, etc. as the book described her, she would make the "perfect victim"

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
She was so far from a victim. She was powerful and strong. She knew what she had to do to get what she needed then she turned the tables and took control.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
No no... I didn't explain properly... In the book she's referred to as "the perfect victim" because she has a physical presence that leads others (men) to think they can victimize her; also, the fact that she looks like a punk chick/hacker/part of a fringe element that does not generally get respected by the mainstream squares means that anyone who tries to victimize her would be more likely to get away with it because she's so undesirable to mainstream society. The fact that she IS so kickass and amazing is part of the author's commentary on Sweden, patriarchy, sexism, prejudice, etc.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Read the book and watched the original, can't wait to see this one!

I'm generally not a huge fan of remakes (look what tragedy the Hairspray remake wrought) but the reason why I'm not overly anxious to watch TGWTDT 2011 concerns the frequent inability of film to fully capture the essence of a really dope-ass and mulit-faceted lead character. We just can't get into people's heads on film the way we can through reading their inner thoughts on a page, I've found at least.
Salander as created by Larsson is a fascinating character, allllllmost as wicked as Lawrence Hill's Aminata Diallo (who is and probably always will be the best fictional character ever created, IMHO), and I found the Swedish film, by virtue of the medium rendered Salander in slightly muted tones...the drive and rage were there, but lacking was a full representation of the thoughts and emotions upon which it was built.
I'll probably still catch it on Netflix between Boondocks episodes though:)

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Saw it, loved it. I had absolutely no problem following along, and i've avoided reading the books and seeing the other films because I have some weird issue with things that go mainstream, it's a shame. Also cuz i'm a tiny girl with tattoos and piercings and I got tired of ppl comparing me to lisbeth. I'm such a dork, she's amazing and i'm in love with her and being compared is the best complement ever! Reading the books now lol.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Why they gotta make the lead girl look so ugly? Everybody likes a good action mystery but she looks ghoulish. And the H&M clothing line looks like Goodwill wouldn't accept it. I like punk but something is off. As much as I loved all the books I'm not feeling it. And I love Daniel Craig.
Sad feelings.

Re: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I actually thought that she looked really hot :D

She was fucking SMOKING hot. I love alternative looks, and I would fuck the shit out of that girl. And the actress actually got all those piercings for real (except I think her nose).

I thought the movie was great and Trent Resnor deserves to be acknowledged for his work on the soundtrack.

<3 the remake of the Immigrant song. I caught this last night & enjoyed it. Loved the character a lot.
