My tax person was polite enough to never ask a direct question about my occupation, but I could tell she was interested. I was very honest but very general and creative with my answers. After a few minutes of that, it was pretty clear to her that I wasn't going to explain and she backed off. From that point forward, it went very smoothly.
The tax category Melonie mentioned also includes artists who sell their paintings in galleries, writers who freelance write for multiple TV shows/ magazines, street performers such as mimes, clowns etc. Girl, you're fine. Just do your taxes. :)
To everyone else, you can be an independent contractor working for an Internet-based media company doing customer service.... or... or.... (you get the idea). I've learned that the more vague I am when I talk to people, the more their eyes glaze over. They think it must be boring, and that's exactly what I want.
