Re: Strippers Are People Too
I actually found one of the linked articles to be extremely 'telling' ...
... which essentially made several 'scary' points -
- UK politicians who have conservative muslim leanings are in some ways very similar to US politicians who have conservative christian leanings, in that both see a 'crusade' to shut down lap dance clubs as a positive development for the 'good of society' ... well, at least in terms of furthering their personal political careers.
- 'Gentrification' i.e. the gradual transition of working class neighborhoods into 'bedroom communities' for upper middle class residents involves a large amount of new investment in real estate, both purchases and remodeling / rebuilding. The real estate developers, as well as existing upper middle class real estate buyers, do NOT want to see anything in their 'gentrified' neighborhoods that would potentially lower property values or potentially dissuade future upper middle class buyers. Having a lap dance club smack in the middle of such a neighborhood could collectively 'cost' the real estate developers and 'gentrified' property owners millions of dollars in terms of potential future sales and potential future appreciation in property values. Thus an entire 'gentrified' neighborhood can easily unite in the purpose of closing down said lap dance clubs based on vested financial self-interest.
- recent changes in UK law ( specifically 2009's Policing and Crime Act ), in a manner somewhat similar to recent changes in US law ( actually, court decisions more than legislation in the US, particularly ERIE v PAPS ), have now officially codified lap dance clubs as 'sex businesses' ( as opposed to 'entertainment businesses' ). This in turn provides new legal authority for gov't to regulate lap dance clubs ... sometimes to the point of 'regulating' clubs out of business entirely.
Combining these factors essentially means that 'strippers' may be people too, but they are now considered to be lower class / undesireable people by the 'powers that be' !
