Yes that is exactly how software based 'zoom' operates. By the time you get to an 8x zoom, the software has thrown away 1 - ( 1/8 * 1/8 ) or 63/64ths of the original video information ! In comparison, a camera with a motor driven 8:1 adjustable focal length lens retains 100% of the original video information.
