On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
Hey ladies i have been reading through the posts but i am so confused by all the topics on here please bare with me while i figure this site out. I just wanted to know what are some good laptops that dont cost over $400, i am thinking of going to either bestbuy, walmart, or target. and a good webcam to start off with. Also i use the encoder for sm where i work but is it necessary to use the encoder for all camming? i am a single mom and i am on a really tight budget so any advice would really help. My internet speed says 100.0Mbps, is this too slow?
Thank you ladies,
Bella:)

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
For computer and equipment deals, I usually use http://www.newegg.com/ or .ca, but I also game a LOT and wanted a really great computer that could handle a lot at once, so I invested 4000.00 in a brand-new computer (financed through dell, it's only 72 dollars a month). I use the Quickcam Pro 9000, and many other people use this or the C910. You can find discounts on ebay or amazon though, so make sure to look there too. I don't cam from a laptop, but you might want to try this thread: http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sho...ps-for-Camming

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
You will need to find a Lap top that has at least a duel core possessor and a minimum of 4 gigabytes ram
to run Adobe flash media encoder Optimally.I don't condone the use of laptops for camming because they are not upgrade
friendly but then again most base desktops being produced now aren't ether.
If your looking for a good deal Wallmart has the best deals on laptops and desktops usual, but make sure you shop around. If you can wait though internet shopping is way cheaper than any department store. Just make sure you get a comp with duel core possessor and a minimum of 4 gigabytes and you should be fine :)

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
Yeah, with desktops you get a "bigger bang for your buck" the only down side is that it's hard to move them around the house (if you want that.)
For $400 you should be able to get a rather decent desktop. Laptop... not so sure.
I just checked and you can get a 4 cores, 6 GB RAM for $499 <-- that should be able to take any encoder and do multiple tasks in the background without any problem IMO

Not to be rude, but I doubt you are getting 100 mbps upload unless you are in a certain part of Europe or South Korea. Maybe download, but that is slightly doubtful too unless you are on one of the pricey $100+ a month plans in Canada or $75+/month plans in the USA. And if you are really getting that speed can you tell us who your internet provider is? I am sure most of us will be wanting to get on this plan.
Currently as far as I know Verizon fios and Shaw have the fastest internet in North America. Verizon apparently has no plans to expand fios and Shaw (its a company in Canada) cannot expand in to what is Bell/rogers territory (hence they are only available in Northern ontario and the west coast of canada). Both verizon fios and Shaw have download speeds of 150 mbps down and 15 mbps up (although some people can get up to 40 mbps upload).
As for getting a new computer I would search for something used online. Craigslist or kijiji, as there are many good buys people are literally giving away for next to nothing. I rarely buy new these days and have bought my current laptop on kijiji, I purchased a macbook pro. Also I found a guy to build me a PC on kijiji, which has awesome gaming specs and I only paid $600 for it. Something similar would cost me $1500+ at stores.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
back to the OP's question ... I have to agree with other posters that you'll have great difficulty getting what is 'needed' to support high speed webcam streaming ... i.e. a dual core processor running at 2.4ghz+, a minimum 4 gigs ram, a high speed USB port etc. ... in a $400 laptop.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
here is a decent Lap Top from WallMart for $369.00 with the specs you need http://www.walmart.com/ip/Toshiba-Bl...emium/19512495
THATS A LOW PRICE :)

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
Maybe since you are on a tight budget you could consider one of the rental places such as Aaron's (not sure if they have them where you are) but I got a new Toshiba Satellite from there and its 120 days same as cash so you could pay it off quickly. But realistically my payments were still only 117 a month and it handles the encoder greatly. Try the Logitech 9000 or c910, at my wal-mart they have the 9000 on clearance sale for like i think 55. But with that camera and computer, you will do greatly!!

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
I've mentioned this before in other threads, but if you're ever in a situation where you have to go without a computer, I recommend Rent-A-Center if there's one in your area. When my son messed up my laptop's screen and it was being repaired, I had gone several days without a computer, and I was so upset. Then it had dawned on me that there's a Rent-A-Center in the area, and I rented a brand new Toshiba laptop with Windows 7, and the cost was $65 for two weeks.
Also, if you don't drive, they can send one of their people out to your house to deliver the rented item(s) if you request it, and there's no extra cost for the delivery. I was very happy with that service.

Arguably, the 2.2 gig single core processor in this laptop is 'anemic' for running webcam host encoder software. Also it has a 'slow' USB port ( USB 2.0 ) versus a 'fast' USB port ( USB 3.0 ) which will slow down the HD frame rate from whatever USB webcam it is connected to.

No that processor is a Duel core Processor here are the specs :)

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
yup I stand corrected !!! But that still doesn't alter the 'slow' processor speed or 'slow' USB port speed.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
I'm looking for a lap top to use for camming too. I have a really nice desktop so I just want a laptop so I can be more mobile. Anyway, I was originally looking for something around $400 & you can find something decent that will handle the encoder if you're willing to buy a refurbished one.
Someone in another thread suggested looking at HSN.com or QVC.com because the have no interest financing. You usually have to pay it off within 4-5 months but you could afford something a little better. Plus you have 30 or 60 days to return it for any reason. So if you find that it's not working with your cam or the encoder you can send it back.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
Over the summer my old laptop crashed, and I needed something quick that would be able to handle the encoder. I went to RentACenter too, like BrownFox said. I had the computer like, that day. I know it is kind of expensive, but I paid it all off in 90 days to avoid all those leasing fees . I still have that laptop to this day.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
True but for the price range its the best your going to get. Id like to see more web cams catch on to the 3.0 usb looks like we will be waiting awhile though.
I think they may be waiting to see how the new thunderbolt port goes over with consumers.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..

You might scare some guys off without the right equipment. I wouldn't do anymore "testing" if I were you. First impressions are big.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
Actually the guys were really cool about it, i told them i was just testing it outt and they were saying i looked great etc...
but i do need my new system asap :) im soo excited about MFC, its a little confusing but i think i can do good on there. I did notice there is alot of haters coming into the room insulting me though, that does not happen on SM with me as much. :O oh well its not gonna stop me at all.

I don't know if you already made your choice, but I recommend looking for a refurbished computer. My Dell was under $500 and it was way more computer than I needed.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
^^^ Great deal. And of course, since it's a desktop, you are able to add another 2 gigs worth of memory chips and a 'fast' USB 3.0 port card to make it truly HD ready for less than another $100 !
PS I love AMD quad core processors ( I run an A6-3650 myself - 2.6 gig / 4 meg cache ). They're excellent for video streaming applications which involve multiple tasks i.e. collecting video from the camera + encoding that video + running a web browser + running the computer's 'normal' functions.

Re: On a tight budget need a good laptop and cam..
Also if it's an emergency and you're on a budget you can try qvc or hsn, they offer payment plans with no credit check. I just bought a HP Pavillion dv6 laptop with an AMD A8 quad core, 750gb HD, 6GB ram, and 3.0 usb ports for $170/mo ($850 laptop.) I would recommend getting the 3 year warranty as well...I wonder if it's too late for me...
