I had the opposite problem- my pole at home grips better then the one at work. The problem is, at my work its COLD! So that might have a lot do do with why I have more problems with the pole at work.

my personal experience...
when i danced before (two years) i actually think my pole trick obsession might have lost me money because...
1. less eye contact and slow sexy moves
2. i got slightly bulky arm and stomach muscles
3. some guys seriously were intimidated/ said they felt i could beat them up
so i am focusing on cardio and light weight training. and when i go back to work in February im not going to try to pack every trick i know into my stage set. lol.
Something I learned a few months after I started dancing: guys want to watch a girl being sexy.
I love pole tricks. I go to the club early and stay late to practice. But I don't do tons of crazy tricks during a stage set.
Men go to strip clubs to get turned on. If you can't do a pole trick and make it look sexy, don't do it. Decide what you want out of your stage set. Do you want to impress the guys and scare some older customers off? Or do you want to "seduce" them and potentially sell dances?
For me, when I first started I was constantly making eye contact with the customers, smiling and teasing, and after a great stage set I would have at least one or two VIP's lined up. After I started to learn a few cool tricks and do them on stage, I found I was focused more on the routine than on the customers, and I barely made eye contact and instead tried to impress the guys. That didn't work and I can't tell you how shocked I was. I learned all these cool tricks and it actually made my sales worse!
I had to find a happy medium. I guess what I'm saying is that pole tricks won't do anything for you unless you can still seduce the customers while doing them. Focus on floorwork, spinning around the pole, and if your stage has a wall, use that too. But strong eye contact will get you dances. Trust me.
As far as learning and strength go, weight training is the fastest and most effective way to strengthen your muscles. Pull ups, bench press, leg press, reverse crunches. Those were the biggest improvement for me. Make sure you eat extra protein if you start weight training.
I agree 100%! When I first started dancing, I hardly made any eye contact because I was nervous and also I didn't come off as too confident because I ws still learning. Now I get more dances and tips because of eye contact and just being myself. I learned that when you have confidence and a great personality, that's what counts the most.
