Renting in the UK - What do tell the landlord you do for a living>
Sorry for the posting frenzy today - just have way to many questions. This one I could not find under the search function.
I will be moving home and looking for a rental property in the UK. I was wondering what the other brits tell the landlord what you do for a living.
My main concern is that most rental leases/tenancy agreements prohibit businesses/professions or trades to be carried out in the property. Knowing that they need proof of employement I am stumped at what I will do or say.
Any thoughts?
Ta!

I rent and our landlords are fine with me working from home. I told them I'm a self-employed technical consultant, which I was (sort of) before i started camming full time. My boyfriend is employed full time though and has savings, so we were able to rent mainly based on his payslips and proof of savings. Your best bet is looking through the paper rather than going through an agency. Good luck

Thanks for the reply,
I think the challenge for me is that I will be renting alone, so they only have my credit, or lack of credit, to go by.

But how long have you been at your current job? Surely you have payslips and bank statements. Generally speaking you need to show you have one and a 1/4 times the amount of the monthly rent so if it's £600 you need to be bringing in £900. If you can get a guarantor and a letter of reference from your previous landlords that will help.

Hey. I rent from a letting agency. They require a reference fee which is like £70 where they phone your employer for a reference to find out if you earn enough money to cover the rent. So you are pretty much doomed cause that aint going to happen. For self employed people, they ask for 1 or 2 years proofs of earnings on paper - which would be your tax slip. (The thing what says how much you earned and what tax you paid). I'd try private renting if I were you. Because these big rental agencys all have sour grapes rammed up their asses. About running business from your home - I've never heard of ANYONE having a problem with this unless it is an illegal business like printing fake money or growing weed or something...

Its true, most rental places won't let you "run a business" from your rental property, but this usually just pertains to actual physical businesses, like a home daycare facility. Working from home isn't really "running a business" because you're an independent contractor for an outside company with a physical address that isn't your rental property. If working on your computer from home was against their rules then many web design people would be shit out of luck!

I did contact one agency to tell them if they would rent to someone that was self employed. He got back to me and said it would be ok if I were to provide a reference from one of my biggest clients!!
Ha ha! I can just see it now on free chat "flash boobies for property rental reference" and what will it say "she works well with dildos"? Reliability - very good, you can rely on her flashing. Dependable? Oh yes, you can depend on her for having an orgasm every time.
Sorry had a good chuckle over their respone!

^ Lol!
It's a tough one. When I started living where I do I had an employers reference. Now however is a different matter. My boyfriend doesn't plan on becoming self employed any time soon so he will be able to get references. If my landlord asked me how the pub was now, I'll tell him it's fine! I wouldn't tell him I was self employed working from home. Because then the questions would start... We are probably moving soon, but into the house my brother currently rents, and his landlord works with his girlfriend. So that's easy.
It would be a fucking nightmare if I was single.
