"Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
Needed to get a second opinion here, from any of you that have a "work" facebook account, for your online persona.
It's not that I'm too horribly nervous about being outed, but today I logged in to find something somewhat disturbing. On my 'work' account, I had a friend request from one of my sort-of friends here in town. She's someone I personally don't talk to, but that knows a lot of the people I know. She's also the biggest loudmouth in the history of women (no offense to any tademarked loudmouths).
My work FB had a stage name. The address was in a different part of the country. Nothing was in any way done to link this to my legitimate FB account, unless FB saw my IP and automatically took that as "Oh hey, it's ___, let's get all her friends over to this account too!"
edit for clarity: the email used for registering also was different.
Looking in the "people you may know", it was FULL of people not only from my city, but people I did, in fact, know.
So what could have tipped off FB? Do they look at IPs to determine friend suggestions? I've since deleted the entire account, but it still scared the bejeebers out of me.
Any similar experiences?

this was the reason why ive got a lot of accounts everywhere other than facebook! would be so paranoid about anybody finding me... has the loudmouth said anything to you? lol

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
I'm starting to ask myself why even have a facebook for work? Facebook seems useless for getting paying customers anyway.
I only get guys wanting to meet who never spend. Waste of my time. I'm considering deleting it permanantly.

I don't know how they do it but they definitely have some magical linking wizard there. I deleted my cam Facebook the other day, but I wasn't using it anyways.
On my personal FB, they were actually able to link me and my ex and we had no mutual friends. They put him in the people you may know box. There could be different reasons why they are able to do this.

I only have a twitter for work ;)

FB logs your IP address... it's probably in your best interest to delete your FB work profile. I've never gotten any business from that, anyway.

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
Yah I'm also finding that a "work" facebook is completely useless.

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
i used to have a work fb, i deleted it when i left the club/area as it was no longer useful, i only really used it to keep in touch with what was going on with the club and the girls i worked with anyway.
I made up a new hotmail email addy to correspond with the dancing name and didnt have it linked to my phone or any of my "real life" people or things.
Having said that, you never know who is a mutual friend of who, and if you dont have super high privacy settings (ie people cannot find you, you must add them for them to be able to locate your profile) then if someone who you know in real life is linked to someone you know in work life, and your profile picture or any info would give away your identity, then its easy to be "outed". Especially if you dance in the area where you and "real life" friends live, a regular customer on you work profile may be friends with one of your old school mates, and some people are facebook snoopers and will look at every suggested person profile, just to be nosy.
Removing any photos which show your face or any gve away tattoo's etc from public viewing, and hide any and all information which you would not want the world to know. Some regulars dont hide that they spend money in clubs and are free and easy about who see's what they write or who they add etc.

I will never dare opening a work FB.
I have a personal one. I'm using an online auction site. I sold a wig there, sent and got an email from the costumer, and that was all. We have no common friends, we live very far away from each other. And still FB keeps suggesting her as a friend. Seriously! o.O How does it know???

Facebook mines data. The more information they can get about you, the better for them (their advertisers pay handsomely). Their entire business model for the past 2 years or so has been getting people linked together by as few degrees as possible (have you noticed how many sites don't even care if you register through them as long as you have a facebook page?). So no, it's not magic, it's what they do. It could be something as simple as an IP address, but these social networks are getting scary. It's why I don't have vanilla accounts anywhere. No need. I'd much rather leave the internet for work and cultivate personal relationships the old fashioned way, ya know?

Yeah, it's deleted and done with now. Must have been an IP thing because there was literally nothing else that may have linked it. no similar email, names, locations, nothin. Ah well, it was nice while it lasted (I did actually have a guy meet me on FB and come over to SM).

Don't trust facebook. at all. I even deleted my personal account and asked all my personal friends to delete my photos.
They even mine your PHOTO DATA. So, lets say a friend of yours found your work persona but wasn't sure if it was you. They could take your work photo and upload it to their facebook. The facial recognition data will tell them if it's you are not.
and it's pretty damn accurate.
ip address is not a way to link people. but it is a possibility that an email or even something cached on your computer (facebook installs tracking cookies now) linked it back. Maybe even a photo matched up if you have one taken together.
i suggest everyone just delete their fb. ESPECIALLY their work facebook if you don't want to be found out. Facebok is going to a really bad place when it comes to privacy. Twitter is much better for promoting imo anyway

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
I had a playlist on my MFC profile and FB linked it to my personal. FB keeps nothing private.

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
FB also bought some facial recognition software last year. Just fyi
-
Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
Yup, I suggest no one use facebook for this work at all because of facial recognition software.

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
I just deleted my work FB, which I never check. I had 31 friend request, and 148 notifications. Thanks for the incentive.

IP/Cookies. Facebook and many sites store your cookies and track your web history. There's been a couple of times where I went to like a makeup site and then youtube and saw the same makeup site in the ad section of youtube. I had a personal facebook and a twitter for my persona...names & emails weren't the same an I didn't tell anyone about my twitter. My sister and my niece found me on twitter and followed me. I freaked out an asked my sister how she found me...she just chuckled.. that shit wasn't cool at all. My sister knows what I do but that doesn't mean I want her following my every step and I dammm sure didn't want my 12yr old niece involved in that aspect of my life. My niece of course didn't know that that was my work twitter an she said my real name in a mention. I ended up deleting my twitter an then eventually deleting my facebook. My sister knows my persona name but I highly doubt that she would go to twitter, search my name, and then follow me. I think the sites traced my history and when she went on twitter my name popped up as someone she should follow. Now I make sure to clear my cookies on the regular bases.

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
i am so scared of facebook..on my (personal) facebook which is the only facebook i have, it suggested me to be friends with the imlive host representative. scarrry :(

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
I bet they did it with your IP address, seriously. Facebook sucks for keeping anything private. I have no facebook at all because I didn't want it telling my real life people to follow my porn accounts.

Re: "Work" facebook profile, almost outed. o.O
If you are logging in from the same computer (or IP) even if you are using a different email address fb reads it and that profile you made for work will show up in the "suggested friends" to the people who are friends in your real fb page it will even show up to friends of friends. I made one for work and it was on my bf friends suggestions I deleted it immediately! fb is just way to risky and everything is tied to everything on there.
