How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Just curious....from another thread where the expense of food and groceries came up....
I know that Im on the leaner side of spending, on average I spend about $100-150/mth. But then someone else said that $80-100/week can be stretched a long way..I freaked out...thats 4x how much I spend! At that rate, I could take kiddo out for a nice meal a couple of times a week, and still have a stocked kitchen. Granted its just my daughter and I...but also, shes 15 and has that teeny habit of spending half her life in the fridge :D
So Im really wondering here....what do you spend and what is it that you all buy??

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Probably about $300 a month for 2 people. We buy a lot of fresh produce, usually we only shop for staples once a month.
We usually always have these things on hand:
pork tenderloin
chicken thighs
trout
steak about once a month
broccoli
cauliflower
potatoes
onions
mixed frozen veggies (usually green beans, peas, corn and carrots)
fresh carrots
romaine lettuce
roma tomatoes
olives (kalamata usually)
mushrooms (usually button and cremini)
feta cheese
mozzarella cheese
colby jack cheese
parmesan cheese
pineapple
apples
oranges (usually two kinds- tangerines and clementines or satsumas)
avocados
bananas
turkey for sandwiches
salami for sandwiches
summer sausage for sandwiches
all natural orange juice, all natural apple juice
2-3 kinds of iced tea. I make them at home from tea bags- my husband is obsessed with hot tea. We have a whole collection of herbal teas.
condiments
cooking supplies (tons of spices, 3 kinds of cooking wine like Marsala, several kinds of vinegar)
rice
milk
heavy cream
sour cream
There's other stuff but that's generally what we buy and always have in the fridge/cupboards.

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Oh that looks good... The only thing that I def would not buy are the meat products, since I dont cook meat, but I do make seafood sometimes. The tea thing is a huge saver too I think...I also always make and have iced tea in the fridge...I have to confess though, its been a long time since Ive bought any...people always notice that I always have tea, so I get it as gifts and such all the time....and I have about 15 boxes of tea right now that will take me awhile to get through as it is hehe!
I always buy potatoes, but never actually make them. I keep thinking Ill make potato skins, or homemade fries, but it never, ever happens and they go to waste. Serious question, I have potatoes right now that I bought like 2w ago...they are sprouting I think? Would I still be able to cook with them or just throw them away?

Just cut the eyes off and peel them. Unless they're soft or grey, they're fine.

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Probably $400/month
I eat super clean. No red meat (though I cheated on this thanks to *Jade Love last week). No Diary (I'll eat some cheese once in a while)
Foods I always have in the fridge or cabinet: Grapes, apples, pasta, chicken, eggs, nuts, raisins, and peanut butter. I used to eat a lot of Fish but it's a bit expensive to constantly eat with the amount of calories I intake.
Drink: Water and juice (Kind of got addicted recently, never used to drink it)
I also eat out a lot. Mostly salads or Chipotle :)

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Ooh that sounds really good...and you know, since you live by the water, most times there are places where the local fishermen will sell fresh fish to you, and its a lot cheaper than at the stores. I have to admit, even though I lived in SD for a long while, I cant recall what kind of seafood is caught locally...! But we did also always go to farmers markets to get veggies and fruits, also cheaper than the grocery store.
BTW your pic there cracks...me...up!! Reminds me of one of my best friends pups....she had this doll that she would hump the living daylights out of all the time :D

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
My best friend is a fisherman so he'll hook it up at times with Halibut and sea/sand bass. I love Salmon though which isn't local as you know. I live between two organic grocery stores so that's nice. I eat a lot of salad. I'll make it greens, gonzo beans, black beans, chicken, almonds, corn, and balsamic. Pretty basic but high on protein.
I'm eating some pumpkin and sage ravioli. Sooooo good :)

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Oh, I forgot eggs! We found a local place where we can get 5 dozen for $7. I buy pasta maybe once or twice a year, I don't eat it but hubs does. Also, soup. Usually chicken noodle and tomato. We also eat a lot of tuna... quick easy protein on the go. Oh, and yoghurt too!

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
I probably only spend somewhere between $30-$80/week for 2 adults, but my hubby always buys his lunch and we probably eat out 1-2x per week so you could add another $100-200/week on that. Food and pretty much anything in general is far more expensive here than north america. I buy chicken, fish, veggies, oatmeal, milk, eggs, and protein bars every week. Maybe a few herbs or cheese or some snacks from the health food aisle.

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Im sorry..I totally spaced out after the mention of pumpkin ravioli :D I love it!
I wish I could get cheaper eggs...thats something I eat a lot of... usually Ill make a bunch hardboiled at once, cause kiddo and I both like to munch on em hehe! So we go through a lot, at least 4 a day between the two of us....
Are there local fruits and vegs/meats in Australia, or is much of it imported and thats why its more expensive?

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
down here way south of the border, some things are very inexpensive ... like bananas, avocados, coffee, and other local produce, and eggs, chicken, pork and other locally raised products typically selling for less than half their USA prices. And prices for local tobacco and alcoholic beverage products are laughably low. On the flip side, things imported from further north, like canned anything, breakfast cereal, and packaged anything, are much more expensive than their USA prices.
So by eating 'fresh' locally produced foods, growing a few things myself ( like tomatoes and peppers ), making more things myself ( like pasta and bread ) plus making a trip north of the border to a WalMart to stock up on 'imported' stuff every couple of months at halfway reasonable prices, I can easily eat well on US $100 a month !
Of course I get to 'cheat' too ... by showing up at one of the local seaside hotels / restaurants / tourist spots and being invited to partake for 'free' by some handsome and generous vacationing gentleman !!!

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
I budget for about $120 a month, for just me. Sometimes I go a bit over, and then if I get take-out or whatever, that would add onto it. I just buy the usual stuff, some fruits n veggies, boxed pasta, lots of eggs and cheese, bread, some kind of meat and then things like chicken nuggets and stuff (I'm not the healthiest eater in the world!!) And then household supplies, because at this point I've pretty much given up on my roommates splitting it and for my own stress levels I'd rather just get it myself and avoid the fights. And cat food and some treats for my kitty

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
I spend a lot. I shop pretty much everyday, without planning ahead, which is bad cause then I pick up things we don't need.
I'd say I spend between €70 and €140. That includes if we go out of get takeout.
When I lived alone I ate cheap food. Lentil curries etc. But I went out more and spent more money on my social life.
Now I live with my man who needs meat with every meal so it's more expensive. I try and do the shopping so I can pick whats on offer, but sometimes its just easier to let him make spag bol.

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
3-400
I like to cook and it makes me happy to have fresh ingredients. I could spend more still at whole foods but trader joes works. I get my meat at the local butcher/meatpacker and it's a fantastic price and taste.
I splurge on things I love like fresh heirloom tomatoes but I buy store brand tissues.

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
I eat and drink well. It's one of life's pleasures I can both afford and obtain. Quicken is both useful and scary. Food and beer are purchased together, so the breakdown is not precise as I have to pick and choose which receipt goes in which category based on the breakdown of that shopping trip.
Groceries
1 Year Total: $5,001.50 ($416.79/month)
Food / Household Products: $2,934.24 ($244.52/month)
Beer: $2,067.26 ($172.27/month)
Dining Out
1 Year Total: $4,627.99
$385.67/month

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
About $500/month for 2 adults and 1 child. groceries in Canada are more expensive than in the US I've noticed. :(

Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
I live by myself but my boyfriend is here every weekend. I probably spend about 30-40/week so maybe 140 a month?
I'm honestly not sure, I need to keep track of it better.
Hopefully it will be better when my boyfriend and I are living together, because it is expensive buying single portions of things :p Although I do try to buy in bulk.
-
Re: How much do you spend on groceries per month?
Def 3-400 a month (about 100 a week). I'm trying to do weekly shopping and get more fresh produce into our diet since hubs is doing MMA now and I'm training for my first 5K. We do wal-mart late night as well (way less crowded than in the day omfg) because although Price Cutter stocks more diverse/imported foods, their prices can be kind of ridiculous. I was struggling to find a 12 oz bottle of olive oil for under 5 bucks the other day, yeesh.

So don't buy any single portions. Freeze! Our freezer is ridiculously full. Meats and stuff, portion them out into ziplocks and freeze them. They keep for like 6 months. You can also freeze cheese successfully, obviously veggies and fruit. Tons of things really.

I never have any success with this. The cheese becomes crumbly.
