Be aware that the zoom function on all LogiTech and other relatively low cost, fixed focal length lens based 'webcams' is software based. This means that the zoom is accomplished by 'throwing away' pixels. As a result, a 'webcam' that can produce 1080p HD at zero zoom loses 3/4's of it's resolution at 2x zoom, loses 15/16ths of its resolution at 4x zoom etc. Thus high zoom video from software zoom based 'webcams' is typically grainy.
To actually achieve HD zoom, you need to use a camera where the focal length of the lens is physically adjustable. This presently means using an analog camera with focal length adjusting motor ( like the Sony EVI ) in conjunction with an analog video capture card / module. But this approach bumps the $1-200 price range of a 'webcam' up to the $700-$1000 price range for the analog camera and analog video capture card / module.
The zoom for logitechs gets all blurry. I usually just physically take the camera and place it closer to the action.
But honestly, it is awkward. When I'm more srs about camming, I plan to use a camcorder on a pan/tilt stand and use the camcorder's zoom function.
Getting a camcorder or sony EviD100 is HIGHLY recommended if you do this as your job full time.
Thank you everyone!!
personally $200 is way too much for a common webcam. If one has $200 for a webcam they are better off either searching online for a relatively new but gently used camcorder or just saving up for another week or two for something more high end and new.Quote:
