but why do US models work in studios? I especially notice that a lot of ebony models work in studios.
Startup in camming can be expensive. Studios already have everything setup, you just go in an work. It's also good for people who just do not have the ability to cam at home, for whatever reason.
^ Not expensive enough to go to a studio - I'd sooner work at mcdonalds for a couple of weeks, buy a laptop , camera and lamp , and then cam , rather than sign my soul away :-)) I have a studio girl friend - while she has to work in a studio ( lives in Eastern Europe ) and has no choice , she actually enjoys it . She works in a physical studio , hence works with her cam friends . She claims it passes her time, and she likes the social aspect ..... With dollars in my eyes, I can't say the same .
I have no clue there is at least one physical studio that I know of in my city and I wouldn't do it. Maybe they live with family and want to hide it?
Less serious reasons:
1. People often work jobs where their friends are working. If youre young and the job doesnt have many prerequisites, this is especially true. If most of your friends reflect your own race - well, there you go. My local walgreens seems to be full of young white teens. The club I briefly danced at had a group of women from Colombia that all rode in together. You congregate where your friends go.
2. I feel few people enter camming with the intention of staying in it beyond a few months or so. I dont mean on SW or ppl's individual experiences - I mean everyone. There are so many dead profiles on every site. So, physical studios have the same appeal as most convenience-pay setups: my understanding is many of them pay daily or weekly, no startup costs, no prerequisites, no schedules, you get to leave work at work.... so, if you just need to make some money now and asap, why not?
3. Camming is really not that well known of a job. There are no Idiots guides or anything you can pick up at Barnes & Nobles. Not everyone knows you can even do it on your own directly. If youre job seaching in the news paper or on craigslist like a lot of people do, youll answer a camming ad and that'll be the extent of what you do
More serious reasons:
1. The massive wealth of the United States is not equally earned or distributed. Some areas is disparity is very striking - and I think in ways people dont see or want to acknowledge. The disparities often are stratified by demographics
2. Startup can be expensive, but expensive is subjective. Some people dont have the convenience of waiting to earn enough to save up to startup on their own. Not everyone's credit is solid enough to have bills in their names. Not everyone can work a scheduled job first to earn enough to start up on their own due to job scarcity, family burdens (real or perceived or cultural) which can include eldercare, childcare, etc.
3. Some areas of the US arent networked for internet access - so people have to drive to cities or other areas to find studios that are rigged with internet access. Internet ownership at home isn't universal, if you analyze it by demographics the lack of universal ownership is more apparent http://www.census.gov/hhes/computer/...ions/2009.html
4. Not everyone has a stable home to work from or quiet spaces to even consider doing this.
Ill be honest though: I had no idea there were physical US studios a year ago. I figured there were small operations of like networked rooms in houses or apartments but not big warehouses or buildings full of cam performers. Id guess youre referring to *the* studio on Streamate? Before I knew it was a studio I thought it was a dorm full of students who all had the same backdrop and couches (whoops ). Their building must be huuuuuuuge.
I used to think some pimp had a big mansion and had his girls camming in the rooms :-\ BTW, anybody else think it's awkward camming in those studios that are only separated by curtains instead of physical walls? I'd rather be in that studio where the girls look like they are in actual bedrooms. I've seen some girls on cam and you can hear their loud studiomate in the background.
I thought the same when i heard about UK girls in studios. I just always assumed it was only EU girls. Now I realize it's mostly because they answer ads on backpages without knowing what they're signing up for :O Or yeah, what Roast said.. assuming they did know but don't have the ability to go it alone
I too fail to understand why some girls work from an actual studio especially if they;re from US/Canada etc..
A reasonable internet connection is not THAT expensive..$100/mo the most..
A webcam costs $70 the most..
An OK computer costs arounds $700.
Cant they:
use a friends/cousin/neighbour/ someone 's computer and internet for 1 month?
and borrow the $70 from someone for a little while?
Cant they find 1-3 hours a day ALONE time in their house?
The paperwork is not that hard to sign...
------------
I think the process of signning up and the whole camming thing must look intimidating....
And this is why people think its hard to get set up...
But if you know how to use facebook etc... and know how to make a purchase online...
you should be fine dealing with camming.
So I dont get it....
Some people don't know the business it is not well known like other posters mentioned. I am surprised I figured out as much as I did before I even found out about SW. I heard about it at work (strip club) and all I had was a website of a campsites that's it. I just researched the site and read their forums but some people are totally lost and don't know where to begin. It is lack of resources and knowledge really.
Camsite...sorry spell check.
I got my start in a physical studio, in Canada.
I saw an ad in the paper, and had absolutely no clue that it was even possible to do from home. I also had a bunch of nosy roommates.
Even if I HAD figured out early on that I could cam from home, I might not have had the guts to try, having no idea if I could even be successful enough to cover startup costs, etc.
Omg I saw one of those too. But I think it was worse! O.O A small asian girl looked like she was wrapped in a big curtain..She had so little space, like no space at all, the keyboard was in her lap, the screen was inches from her head, and the cam was slightly above her. And the curtains were continously moving, and moans and talking was very loud in the background, and she only typed prvt bb, come prvt, play in prvt. The feed was choppy and not a great quality. And she did get privates. I wonder how much she charged for this.. o.O And I wonder if she wanted to do it at all... :(
Small refers to her size, not being a child.
Because you when Google "How to become a webcam girl" or "Become a Cam Girl", mostly studios pop up. Most girls don't know about SW and the fact that studios are bad business.
When I first started camming I had just gotten out of a relationship. I had to move in with a friend and had:
No webcam
Very slow internet
No lights
$0 (not even government assistance)
Had to work around the schedule of a friend and her 2 year old
I'll tell you right now, if there had been a studio near me, I would have worked there. It took me almost a year to get stabilized in camming. A year. Not everyone has money to do this on their own, nor do they have the ability to call on anyone for money. Even if you have terrific friends, almost everyone is facing difficult times. So yeah, I'm sure a lot of women know they can do this on their own. In fact, I'm pretty sure one of the top girls on SM IS in a studio.
This question also relates to Dungeons in my opinion. It's the same thing. So many women could be independent Dommes but chose to work in Dungeons even though the internet could be their traffic. Why? Start up capital. You can go in and work and all the tools and rooms are ready for you to use. I loved working in a Dungeon and very rarely did independent work. I can only assume it can be the same with camming. When you have a lot of women who do the same thing as you, it seems more homely and nice.
I work under the Ebony category and those girls in the studio are like revolving doors. Every week its a diff set of girls...I have no idea what their doing in that studio but its def something shady if that many girls leave. I literally log on just to check out who the new studio girls of the day are lol.
Like others have said, no everyone has the start-up required. To a lot of people, the cost of the equipment isn't a big deal, but to others, it's a HUGE deal. When you're on government assistance, you can't really justify spending $700 on a good laptop. Not everyone can rely on family or friends for favors. I know I certainly can't; I laugh at people who tell me that I should ask my mom to babysit my son so I can find a job. I tell them, you really don't understand that it takes more than four hours a month, do you? My family doesn't babysit but maybe four or five hours on random days, once every month or two. So I'm limited to working nights when my son is sleeping. Other people are even more limited; they may have disruptive roommates, or they're still living with their parents. Some people have shitty situations that they simply can't afford to change, so working in a studio, while it seems like a horrible idea to those of us who have a choice, is the ONLY choice for them.
TLDR: You do what you can, and some people simply can't afford to do camwork from home.
I remember when I was 19 I contacted some studios in my area (they have all since closed) because I didn't know any better and camming from home was NOT an option. I ended up freaking out and not having the balls to go through with it (bahahaha) but I strongly considered it.
I actually think studios could potentially be ethically run. Like there are a lot of students living in dorms, moms, etc. that would like a cool place to cam with baller computers, etc. But camgirls should be aware that in the long run, working from home is ideal for maximizing your earnings.
Honestly, if there was a physical studio near me, and depending on the set up, I would consider it if I was just starting out- heck, I would consider it now, depending on the % they take, and how it was run.
If I could drop in one or two days a week, and they weren't taking a bundle, I would actually really like it.
Why?
- Because it is nice to get out of the damn house!!! Not just for me, but I know that it would be nice for my other half to have the place to himself for a while, and not just while I am out for coffee or something.
- Because there are no distractions. Especially with the puppy in the house, it is SO easy to be distracted...if I was working at a physical studio, I would be able to go in for, say, six hours, and FORCE myself to work through it. I am terrible for distractions!
- To meet other gals in the area! It gets pretty lonely sometimes, and as much as I love you ladies, I would really love to have some camgirl friends around!
For the most part, it isn't worth taking the extra cut, but I can see why people would do it.
