Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
Currently have a loaded 12 gauge in easy reach of where we sleep. No handguns right now, but that will soon change - probably a cute little pink handled .22 semi that easily fits in her clutch and a Glock 19 for me cuz I LOVE the way that thing shoots.
As foreign as the concept of an armed citizenry is to some of you, the concept of being legally prohibited from owning a weapon is downright scary to me. When the government forces you to rely on them for protection, well... You have to rely on them for protection. If owning a gun is a criminal act, only criminals will have them. I have a problem with that.
If everyone was required to own a firearm, and taught from a young age to respect it and use it properly, there would be less crime, period. And before people start throwing around protests to tat statement, there isn't anything to compare it too, so I guess we'll never know. But as it stands, America has an active gun culture and easy access - and poor follow through on education and culpability. That's a bad combination.
But here's one for you - just about anyone can get a drivers license and buy a car, even in Canada and Australia. Even dangerous criminal people can LEGALLY buy a car. And that's FAR more deadly than a handgun. Just sayin'.
Anyway - specifically on topic, the girls have been followed home several times, and I have been followed twice picking them up, once by someone who I KNOW was armed. We did not own a gun at the time, and I wished we did. Never have that problem again. I hope I never have to use it, but I can tell you this - those assholes that started shit with GF#1 and stuck around trying to start shit while I held them off with an aluminum bat as best I could until the police got close and they left could EASILY have overpowered me if ONE of the 3 of them was willing to risk closing in on me. Nothing on earth says "go the fuck away right now" like the sound of racking a 12 gauge, and I bet they would have tripped over each other to get the fuck out if I'd walked out of the garage with that instead of the bat; and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had to worry about getting overpowered, either.
I have a 7 year old son. About the only thing the ex wife and I disagree on is teaching him the proper use of firearms. My cousins in Idaho were hunting and shooting at age 6. Guns a re a part of life. I'd rather he know what they are, how they work, and how to use them responsibly than for them to be a scary mystery to him.
As for "willing to use it" - I don't understand this, either. I am NOT looking to kill anyone. Ever. I hope it never happens. But as I see it, if someone breaks into my house, I did not kill kill them; they committed suicide. I will lose ZERO sleep after putting 2 shells of 00 into anyone breaking into my home, and I won't bother to find out if they're armed, either. You're here, you're not supposed to be, you're dead before I have to worry if you have a weapon or not, and that's not my fault, it's yours. If you cannot think that way - don't own a gun, or just get something to have fun plinking cans with.

It is one of the Checks and Balances purposefully put into the U.S. Constitution. The Powers of the Government are divided into the three Branches so as to counter act each other. The Second Amendment is there to put a check into the hands of the Citizenry. It has been used. The coal miners returning from WW1 put down the despotic local government and sheriff.

I can draw you two comparisons often ignored. Firearms were and probably remain on the curriculum in Russia. Young Russians in Comsomol, (Red Scouts?) learned firearms starting with air rifles, then .22s, up to the AK-47 as Seniors. Then there are military schools all around the U.S. some are middle and high schools. Marksmanship, even if it is air rifles is on their curriculums.
Some colleges in the US have Skeet shooting available to students. Trinidad State where I received my certificate in gunsmithing (yes, a college that teaches gunsmithing) has an air rifle range in the attic of the administration building above the President’s office. Trinidad may be unusual in having a Rifle Range (10 miles from main campus) and can put together a Rifle team with M1 Garands.

Even sober people kill more persons with their cars collectively then all the people killed with guns.

Yep, the inherent risk to criminal activity is death by those that choose not to be a victim.

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
By the way those of you who are going to quote statistics to me about ownership and your likelihood of being killed because of firearms ownership.
Please don't quote to me from the U.S. Center for Disease Control. Dr. Kellerman has a habit of putting teen gang members in his statistics as child victims. Dr. Kellerman makes no distinction in the persons who lawfully keep a firearm in their home for personal protection and gang members who illegally own and use firearms as part of their criminal activities.
Dr. Kellerman is employed by the CDC and wants to keep his employer happy.

I say let's *BUMP* this thread up and see who else wants to add to it.
OAN:: I ended up buying a Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380 a couple of weeks ago. I also went through the paperwork and fingerprinting required to get my concealed carry permit/ weapons carry permit. :D

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
my family has always kept hunting guns in the house, for protection and obviously hunting lol..they kept it way up away from us, unloaded of course, and bullets also locked away. my sister actually had to use it on a guy that was threatening her while my parents were away last year. my boyfriend has a gun, i can't own one because of two assault charges that im trying to beat. i want to put up a NRA sticker on my damn door, those gun-free zone signs are just asking for it IMO. retarded

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?

One mistake a lot of people make is thinking little guns are easier to handle than larger guns. The bigger/heavier the firearm within a given caliber the easier it is to handle.
Ladies that chunky clock 17(9mm) or glock 22(40s&w version of the 17) is much easier to handle, than the cute little pink sub compact 9mm or .380(weak 9mm) And you can always duracoat your bigger gun pink /purple tiger stripes!
The longer then handgun the easier it is to aim. The heavier/bigger the slide the easier it is to pull back because the spring doesn't need to be as strong to hold back the recoil, like on little guns!
Just so your boyfriends/hubbies don't try to talk you into something too small.
I got a 20 gauge pump shotgun near my bed. :D

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
No gun. Unless I was trained with one, I am better off not having it in my house. Knife and a fist? That I can do.

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
^^^ Fists are a quick to break your hand, at least get a good metal bat. :-P

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
Always have, always will. Stripper, bartender, kindergarten teacher...doesn't matter what your profession is sometimes. Just watch an episode of "I Survived". Psychopaths and f*cked up people target everyone.

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
We have 3 guns, a .22 pistol, a shotgun with a 20 round clip and a huge WWII Russian rifle. I would not feel safe without them. I grew up on a ranch in the middle of nowhere with a schutzhund-trained German Shepherd guarding the house, so moving to the city with people everywhere freaks me out. I hate seeing the backyard motion light turn on, or hearing a car pull up outside at 1 am; my anxiety is at insane levels these days. Add in that we live behind a strip of bars and nightclubs, and that I'm both a stripper and a bartender in a Coyote Ugly-type bar, and stalking becomes a terrifying possibility.
The shotgun stays loaded at the foot of the bed. If anyone breaks in, we'll hear them either breaking a glass door, forcing the normal doors or waking up the parrot (who will promptly start screaming :D) The master bedroom is at the end of the hall, which leads straight to the living room/kitchen, so we can either fling open the door, turn 90 degrees and light 'em up, or just wait for the person to walk down the hall and blast through the door when they reach it.
I have zero qualms about killing someone in that scenario. Anyone who breaks into a house knowing it has people in it, is obviously looking to harm them. I don't buy into the aiming for the kneecap or otherwise just incapacitating them; if I fire the gun, someone's gonna die. Arizona has the "stand your ground" law, which allows me to shoot without asking questions and considers it "justifiable homicide".
There is nothing wrong with owning a gun as long as you know how to operate it and it stays well out of reach of children. Ours get stowed in a back closet during parties, and anyone else handling them otherwise, we empty the magazines.
Also, I totally agree that the smaller guns are not necessarily easier to shoot; even though it's a good-sized pistol, I am utterly worthless with the .22, but I can shoot bullseyes with the rifle (which is so heavy most of my female friends can't pick it up, and will knock you over with the recoil). If you're in a situation where you may have to shoot someone, your hands will be shaking and you will have a hard time aiming a little pink pistol that barely weighs anything. Most of us carry pretty large purses anyway, so a larger handgun can still fit in there.

Two round burst fire would make it a Class III. There is a lot of paperwork to get a Class III and it takes six months to a year. If you are going to go to all that trouble you may as well get something automatic. Unfortunately I don't think you can get a new automatic, it has to be an old one grandfathered under a provision snuck in the firearms owners protection act.

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
Get a biometric handgun safe: they keep the handgun locked away from the kids and accessible to the user.

I don't, but I have two large, protective shepherds. Even if you took one of them out, the other one would get you.

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
My dad has one in his room.
I am not all that familiar with firearms but I would like to get one for home defense.
I like shotguns so maybe a sawed off would suffice for close range?
Also would I have to shoot the intruders in non critical areas because If I shoot em in the head then I can get in big trouble?
Regardless of the fact they were breaking and entering? So maybe just aim for the kneecap/leg area to disable them?

Re: Do any of you keep guns in the house?
I'm on probation so I'm not allowed to have any weapons, but as soon as I get off probation I am getting myself a shotgun for my home. I live in an upper-class safe city in an apartment complex with security but that does not in any way make me immune to tragedies. It's better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have one.

No, do not saw the barrel off a shotgun. That is a serious criminal offense. Buy a new shotgun with an eighteen inch barrel. Never try to shoot either the head or knee. Always shoot at center of mass.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

Does a BB-gun count? It looks like a "real" gun, and it shoots pretty good...
