Incorporating my art with my work?
So I've just started camming and C4S. And I have been thinking about working my art into my videos and what not. I figure I could do paintings naked or dressed up or something and sell videos of it, and if anyone likes them enough they can buy the paintings too.
I think its a great idea but I just wanted to make sure it would be safe and there would be no negative repercussions, like getting tracked down and what not.
Obviously I'll be signing my paintings with my stage name, im not that silly :P
So does anyone have or know someone with any experience with this type of thing?
Do anyone know anything about not stage names - but full on pseudonyms?
Thanks in advance lovelies ^.^
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
In terms of safety, I think that it really depends on how far you want to go with your art.
If you already are somewhat established, or are trying to become established as an artist under your real name, you may have a problem, especially if you have a fairly distinctive style. Somewant wanting to find you could fairly easily find a website, or a profile on deviantart, and start to track you down from there. If you do art shows, and mention them on your art website, you have a real problem with someone finding you.
If you do not currently have websites, profiles, or art shows going on, then you wouldn't be trackable - but would you want to do these things in future? Again, the more distinctive your art is, the more likely it is that someone would be able to hunt you down if they really wanted to.
If you paint for fun, and aren't looking to really make a name for yourself, go nuts!! Otherwise, I would always steer clear of mixing your artistic career and your camming career. It's the same with music - if you play guitar for fun, go crazy on cam. But if you are in a serious band, don't try to promote music through camming, because the two could cross over at a later date and give you problems.
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
Well I'm not really established at all. I had a few profiles but there wasnt much on them and I have deleted them. I figure I could establish myself through my camming persona, which is why I would like to know about pseudonyms. My idea is similar to say.. a cam girl that wrote erotic stories on the side and by meshing them together, got more traffic and thus more profits. My stuff is moderately distinctive, most of it would be considered psychedelic and a much of it includes adult/fetish content.
I have decided that if I do choose to go ahead with this, I'm starting fresh as if I was a whole new person. Nothing I have done in the past will be mentioned, but I may redo old ideas.
I think I would prefer to be known for my pieces through my cam persona and not my regular self, I dont have much interest doing shows and what not as my normal self. But if I wanted to do these things under my alias, would I being able to do it safely?
I'm trying to things of anything that could possibly ruin things, like sending a large painting over seas - I would assume the post office asks for personal information when shipping large packages. Could someone possibly track me down in this way? Could I use my alias for things like that?
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
I think it really depends on how comfortable you are with your camming... and how much you are wiling to let other know about it....
If you do mix your art and camming I would do you art under a stage name too.... I personally think mixing your art and camming could be very fun and profitable for both...
If you mix..... You have to be open about caming with everyone in your life that you are close with....
I personal do not keep camming a big secert... I tell those close to me and my friend.... I don't hide it..
I think you can safely mix the too... you just need to know you limits and understand that it only take one leaks...
If you don't want your facebook friend finding out that you cam don't post your art on facebook, because your art is associate' with your camming.
I model under my cam name and I feel totally safe doing that... But modeling is linked to my camming and that is just fine with me....
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
I definitely wont be putting anything on facebook. I actually just deactivated my account. Only close friends will ever see any of my alias' paintings and in person. I'm enough of a recluse for most other social issues to not be a problem, but i'd like to be prepared for everything.
I have told my best friend so far, because I know she wouldnt disapprove and talk me out of it or tell me I should be ashamed of myself. I actually dont mind letting people know because I feel pretty sound about myself and what I think is right and wrong and what I want. And I actually feel quite proud to call myself a cam girl, because it means I have found my way out of a crappy situation and be happy with myself, it takes guts to do what we do :)
But I mostly keep it on the down low out of ermm.. 'convenience'. Like I plan on being completely open with any new people I meet because it feels awesome to be honest and its nice to just filter out all the judging assholes straight from the beginning.
I just dont see many benefits to being completely out of the closet though? The first thing I think is the more friends and local people know, the easier it is for say, family to find out. And I normally wouldnt care except that I've had to stay with them while trying to find my own place after a bad relationship that ran me into debt:/ I am kind of expecting to get found out eventually so im ready for when that happens as well.
Has anyone ever had people you know find out and try to black mail you?
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
If you are going to be using an alias to ship/sell your work under it would have to be a realistic sounding name. That would be a female first and last name. (Ive shipped many large packages overseas- they dont ask for ID, just have you fill out the customs forms declaring whats inside- but you do have to provide a name and address. You could put your alias as the name, but that would still leave you the problem of what to put for the address (?). The post office isnt going to accept it with a fake address and Im not sure if they'll accept a po box as the senders address either (you could visit your local post office and ask) Using a fake name and then putting your real address kind of defeats the purpose of using the fake name to keep your identity a secret.
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
Yeah i agree, that is a bit of a dilemma. Do you think there is such a thing as like a reverse mail forwarding service? Similar to those sites that give international shoppers a US mail address so that they can buy from US stores or something?
Surely there must be some kind of anonymous mailing service to protect the sender?
probably not though :/ might help terrorists or something
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
Your options would be the following
-only sell the paintings to US buyers. Get yourself a PO box, put your alias as the name and the PO box as the return address.
If you want to sell/ship to someone internationally; first- have you considered/researched the cost? To send a large framed picture youre looking at around 100$ Is it reasonable to expect a customer to pay for a cam show, the cost of the picture, the cost of the framing, plus the shipping? Or were you going to absorb some of those costs? You can find the exact price or close to the exact price by going online to http://postcalc.usps.com/ enter a country and the size/weight of your package. But like I mentioned before using the post office will require you to disclose your address.
You could ship from a UPS store, or a Fed ex store. Usually they will allow the sender to use their address as the senders address but they charge 2-3 times more then the post office does. So you may be looking at 2-300$ to ship a framed piece. You could always mail it unframed- rolled in a tube, which may only cost 20 at the post office or perhaps 60 at the UPS store. The UPS store/Fed ex stores also have online calculators for postage and before going forward and offering shipping to an international buyer, you should definitely check with the store and make sure they will allow you to use their address as the senders address, as I know they use to in the past, but their policies might have changed.
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
If you are shipping, you can use a PO Box as a return address. If you want to be really careful, then you can get a PO Box the next town over (or state, or however far you want to go). You can then also use it for checks and wishlist items as well. (Put art supplies on your wishlist).
If you only want to work as your alias, and only sell paintings online, I can't see an issue. The only real issue with finding out is if you were trying to sell work or work as an artist under your real name, or wanted to sell or exhibit in person. If you ONLY want to paint as your cam persona, you shouldn't have any issues related to being found out that just relate to the painting.
On a side note, if you don't want your family to find out what you do (which is understandable!) I wouldn't tell people that you have just met!!!! A lot of camgirls keep their work a secret, but the best way to do that is only to tell the people that you trust. If you tell people that you don't know well, you never know if they are going to be very judgemental, or very indiscreet about who THEY tell - and the world is a pretty small place - some random person you get chatting to at the gym may be the daughter of someone who is in your mom's book club! And gossip tends to spread the fastest when you don't want it to. I've had a couple people threaten to "tell my family what I do"....which cracks me up, because everyone knows what I do - grandmother included!!
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
I live in Australia so I dont know how much of that would apply to me but thank you anyway annabellz, you have given me much food for thought :)
Now that you have pointed out how expensive the shipping will be, I think i might stick to poster paper or whatever, and if anyone likes my stuff enough they can request a custom painting on whatever they like, as long as they are cool and willing to pay for all of that.
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
Wow Manyroses, even your grandma? :O That takes balls, mass respect haha
How did that one get brought to the table? And how did they react if you dont mind me asking?
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
I was actually fortunate enough that when I decided to get into the adult industry (as a stripper) I had a full time job, I just didn't like it very much! So it was a choice, rather than a necessity for money. Because of that, I actually spoke to my mother about her thoughts BEFORE I started - asking her what she thought, if she would be ok with it, etc. She was totally fine, so then I spoke to the rest of my family - I didn't want to do something that they wouldn't be ok with. Luckily, my family are freaking AWESOME, and they all said that all they care about is my safety and happiness. In fact, both my mom and my grandma have always thought that it was kinda cool and glamorous - they both had fairly narrow lives, very restricted, and have admitted to living vicariously through me a little! When I decided to make the switch from dancing to camming, I had the same conversations.
I know that I am really lucky to have such an understanding family - and now everyone knows. The only people that don't are people that haven't asked what I do for a living. I don't go around trumpeting it to the world, or anything - when people ask what I do, I say I work from home, and if they ask further, I tell them. I think that because I don't make it a big deal, they don't consider it a big deal either.
These days, my family doesn't really talk about it much - it's not a secret, but it's just not something that comes up a lot - same with my sister's very vanilla job - there are just more interesting things to talk about!
Re: Incorporating my art with my work?
Wow, your family is freaking awesome! I really admire that :)
A semi related update, I just got a mail forwarding address and am currently testing it out, ill let you know what happens in 3-4 weeks. I read something on one of the sites where you can make it so that you have like a an online retail warehouse in the US so that might be an option as well. I have emailed them with some questions.
How do you girls that sell panties and props send yours safely?
