Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
http://todaynews.today.com/_news/201...in-secret?lite
I hope all of us gals have all our computer security up to snuff, but just in case take this as a reminder!
It's been around for a while, but the more well known something gets the more people will try it. Implanting a trojan on a computer to peep through your webcam and watch you, without paying! For shame :(
Always have an antivirus!
- Symantec, McAffe, and Norton are the most popular pay-for options.
- AVG, Avast, and Microsoft Security Essentials (windows only) are the most popular free virus scans.!
- You should only have 1 virus scan, as multiple can conflict with each other.
Anti-Malware:
- Malware Bytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, and Hitman Pro are good anti-malware options and are free.
- TDSSKiller and CCleaner are good if you get those hard-to-remove rootkits!
And always practice safe web browsing and e-mail checking.
- Don't open e-mails from people you don't know especially if they have attachments.
- Never click a link in an e-mail or online that you are not 110% positive is safe and you were expecting it.
- Don't visit websites that you are not already aware of.
- Check the domain on a site BEFORE you enter your login information. (IE: make sure it says the correct URL and is privacy protected!)
- Remember that your bank, cam sites, Internet Service Providers, the government, and anything else legitimate will NEVER ask you for your user name and password or account numbers through e-mail or IM or by calling you! If you get a call from "your bank" and they ask you for personal information, ask if you can call them back at the bank's official number to verify that they are who they say.

You don't want people peeping on your cam life for free, right?

Yeah I had to go in and edit this post so now my bullets are all damn wonky! Darn you glitches! Luckily this thread has way less content to re-write than the giant thread you made!
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
See, every time I edit the CGGtCH it deletes the contents of the post. I have too much formatting in that shit to have to re-write the code every time.

I recently had that when going through past posts! Luckily, I wasn't trying to keep any of the info in those ones.
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
This is not a new trend. This has been possible to do for over 10 years now.
Which is why you need to listen to twistedprincess warning about keeping your computer safe.
I would like to add an extreme suggestion, which people are not going to like....
You need to back up your information and format your computer regularly. Trojans have gotten so smart lately that sometimes even when you think you have gotten rid of them, you haven't.
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
Thanks for the reminder!!
Side note - this is yet another reason that I LOVE having a separate cam room....even if my cam was tapped into, they would see nothing but my empty office wall. HA! Seriously though - there is no "real life" stuff, or any chance of seeing something that would reveal my location.
Another note - a really, really easy way to make sure that no one can hack your webcam and watch while you aren't working? Don't have an internal cam, and unplug your cam at the end of the shift. Easy.
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
Thank you for the post! I knew I wasn't just being OCD by unplugging my webcam and taping over the built in one on my laptop one...
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
I just saw a clip about this on the Today Show. Although it's possible I hate that they do this sensationalist bs. Most cam girls are already computer savvy enough that this is not a concern, but it's still a good reminder to keep all your stuff up to date.

i used to do this. i had two harddrives in my comp one i always kept just the windows stuff and the other for thing i put on and it would always be problems so once a month i reformated the windows drive and it ran fine after that.
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
It also helps if you cover your webcam hole when you're not using it. Sounds dirty but it works unless you're doing a show. I set my webcam settings for my logitech cam which is detachable and I unplug it when I'm finished. They can't watch what they can't see lol.

its already been said but it is such a good tip better be safe then sorry i need to start doing that too but i have so many usb things connected to my comp its easer to just leave them in so it doesnt become a wibbly wobbly cordy wordy thing. i should just label them tho so i know what they are
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
A couple of years ago I remember; seeing this on the news, hearing a couple of cases(there was a principal who spied on students at home), and watching tv shows that implemented this. After I saw it on the news I took a piece of black electrical tape and covered my internal webcam. Like ManyRoses I unplug my webcam from my computer after logging off or I turn it towards a wall or the floor. I know it sounds like I'm a little paranoid but seeing how easily it was done and how oblivious ppl were to it really freaked me out. Ppl were on their computers in a public place and a hacker was sitting right across from them staring at them from their webcam. The news castor went over and said do you know that your being watched right now? and pointed to their webcam. The ppl didn't believe him until they saw themselves on the hackers computer. No thank you.

I didn't like the idea of tape-y sticky goop on my computers, so I spent a few bucks to get Spy Shutters on Amazon. They're magnetic, but weak enough to not have to worry about it compromising your laptop. They can be slid back and forth over your internal webcams. I use them religiously when I'm not camming, and I slide them over the cam lens when the show is over to give me a few extra seconds to get redressed. I swear by them!
Re: Hacking Trend: Hacking your Webcam
oh for sure unplug your cam when you are not on!!! I did not know until my former-hacker roommate informed me that the C920 has wireless software.
Before this, the cam never left the laptop for convince sake. One day I was trying to connect bluetooth speakers to my laptop and to my shock my C920 was listed as a connected device to my laptop, thus leaving it vulnerable. And that is all I will post in a public forum as to not give any would-be crackers any info.
