I worked a makeup counter at a dept store in college. I feel your pain. I wouldn't quit a regular job to do this full-time; that would be taking a big risk, especially on the days when you aren't making any money. Maybe find something different?
I'm working partime in a private spa as a licensed makeup artist and hair stylist. They give me freedom to grow and market myself unlike places like supercuts that had me working over time for no extra pay. I have no intention on going back to a franchise salon either. At the current spa where I work building a clientele has been a slow trickle.
I have finally begun camming/PSO work after a year of researching and getting the balls to jump into it. My first night I made $20 in 1 hour. Since I'm starting out as non-nude I'm not surprised I that I did poorly. I'm having a hard time getting clients from both jobs, I wonder if I i should just quit camming/PSO work while I can and focus on my vanilla job but I really enjoy this and would love to be making more money.
I do wonder if I get outed, how differently will my co-workers treat me. So far I'm seen as this quirky shy good girl but in reality, I'm a pervert lol. I try to keep my professions separate cause I don't want them to think I'm soliciting their male clients for sex. I' don't mind telling my boss what i do on the side but I'd hope they don't see me as toxic element in their workplace and fire me for what I do after hours.
Well both camming/pso and your vanilla job will take time to build a client base and also to see more money trickle in faster on them you have to spend time in them. I've just got back camming more regularly this January, pushing myself to stick with working everyday 4 hours a day, and sometimes able to get in some escort clients, both businesses require time to invest to push out marketing and building clients and then possible repeat clients.
I always suggest if you are going to do camming/pso work to stick it out for about 3 to 6 months to see if the numbers make it worth it for you. Building a business takes longer of course but if your not getting success even if its small ones like a $100 day maybe even a $50. You also have to look at what are your financial goals from camming/pso and consider how much time can you put in to
As for the possibility of being outed , There is no way of really know if it will happen, some people work in adult work and never get outed and some get outed a month into starting. I suggest not telling your boss what you do outside of the workplace, because they do not need to know.
I am also in the hair business but I am the 'Head Hoe In Charge'. I would personally not tell your boss if I were you. Sometimes you gotta know when to keep your mouth shut. If you get outed, they will treat you differently for sure. Until you can make decent enough money to live comfortably, I would hold onto your vanilla job. Building a good clientele (hair business) takes time. In the mean time, allow yourself every opportunity to succeed.
My vanilla job restricted the hours and energy that I had for camming. Camming is the true source of my bill-paying revenue. I was making about $150 a WEEK at my vanilla job and working five days. It was terrible money. I made the decision to quit even though camming is rocky for me, because I have bad depression and I'm unmotivated, go figure. But just my two cents. :)
I'd hope i dont get fired from my vanilla job but but if it happens it happens, so right now i'm searching for back up plans and i'm not %100 I could make this my main source of income especially since I'm the farest I'll go is bras and thongs.
Then DON"T
If you are afraid & feel you would be judged, STOP now.
Work on marketing for your regular job. You want new customers, but what are you doing daily to get them? How many books on sales & marketing have you read? Go to the library & stock up. Then put in several hours daily on drumming up new biz. I don't care how many hours you spend at your job, it takes going above & beyond to succeed.
Cammiing is just a crutch & keeping your from totally focusing on your real goal.
Sam
@Sam I have been stocking up on books, I still read up on the latest techniques and business advice. They even helped me find a list of continueing ed and business classes and I will be attending one next week. The spa is unfortunatly in a hidden area and the other girls hav told me it took them years to get their clients. It get discouraging at times but I still go out handing out my cards and keeping my social network sites up to date. With all the work I'm putting in and to add there are 2 salons in our shopping center. The clients come at a very slow pace and its not enought to keep this as my main job. It gets tiring but I can't stop
Some of the other girls have a side job with stuff they enjoy like computers and cooking.
I do enjoy pso work and the extra cash is nice. I'd love to make this a partime thing but like I said getting clients is hella harder than reading how to get clients.
If you're worried about getting outed, then please read this thread and all links within: https://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sh...ckground-Check
Isobel took the time to add several links that can help explain how camming can affect your vanilla job, your personal life, future relationships and job prospects, etc.
DONT quit until you are sure this is what you want to do and DONT quit until you are making CONSISTENT money on cam. Also don't quit until you have a emergency savings fund incase you have a bad month or two.
As far as being outed always remember its not if but when. I have been outed twice that I know off, so probably man many more times that I'm not aware of.
Good luck and welcome to SW :D
If you are only doing non-nude work don't plan on camming becoming your main source of income for a LONG time. The non nude market grows slimmer and slimmer every month. Honestly, if you're going to start a paper trail with camming and have it in your background check you may as well go all out and actually do nude and masturbation shows. Lol
^ True dat! Because honestly, even if you do non-nude on, say, MFC, someone isn't going to be all "Oh you were working in the sex industry, but it was non-nude, so it's cool!" Nope. They are going to be like "EWWWWW You dirty nasty WHORE, you worked in the sex industry!" (OK, maybe not 100% that, but you get what I am saying!)
If you've done sex work, be it escort and actually fucking guys, or a PSO and just talking dirty, it's all the same in the minds of vanilla people. They don't really distinguish between it, to be honest.
My bf recently got me into camming I wasn't sure what it at first but Im well into it now and here is my issues ... I'm currently in a job that pay less than min wage as I'm learning while working and my be recently got a job that pays half well but he dreads going into work already due to the job and I'm not happy with that job I'm doing as I can see myself staying there. Now we are both thinking about leaving for part time jobs and start camming the rest of the time but we are worried about the jump into the unknown. In our first month of camming my bf took a couple hundred less than what his vanilla job pays and he didn't have to work half as hard as he did in his day job.
Sorry for for the long read I'm basically asking if anyone has taken the jump and did it go smoothly or did you struggle to start?
That depends. Do you feel your job is worth keeping? What is the job and why do they pay less than min. wage?
Camming takes a while to really see the income. Maybe keep the vanilla jobs if you need them, until you don't need them.
I struggled and although I cannot and do not speak for all... I believe some here built up a line of reputation, dedication, faithfulness and some fingermarks of marketing. For example:clip videos, other sites..split cam and advertising.
My wage is so low as I'm leading the field in working in as I though it was something I could see myself doing but I can't see myself doing it now. My partners job isn't anything special he's only there for the money but is dreading going in as he doesn't like the job. Yeah that's what we both worry about the first month went well and we didn't even try we just went on when we could be bothered. Thanks for your input it's appreciated
How long have you been camming? Camming is unpredictable so I would keep at least one vanilla job between you and your boyfriend to partially cover your bills until you are 100% sure you can rely solely on camming. I do have a vanilla job that pays for the majority of my bills that I love so I do empathize if you hate your job.
The people here appear to be sincere and really are trying to succeed. My observation from it has been positive on the realities of the field. Here's my take...if you're ambitious (for whatever reason) you'll be fine. That's my take anyway on sunny and dark moments with rewards that will always out weigh the minimum wage. I mean, you still get to be your own boss right?
We were both going to get part time jobs maybe stacking shelves nothing major to cover the bulk of our bills. We are but just unhappy in what we do we just think it's a better option while we're both young and have no major commitments.
We both are and my partner prob more so than me but I'm more laid back and think it's just a job we can get something else just as long as our bills are covered.
Thanks for the advice everyone please keep it coming :)
I quit my vanilla job at the end of January to cam full-time. For starters, you need to cam for more than 1 month to get an idea of what it is like. I had been camming on the side for about 15 months by the time I took the full-time leap, and I had been able to try different sites, learn about selling clips, venture into PSO. Not trying to get down on you, but often "fresh meat" makes a lot of money quite easily, with the "new" status. You need a couple months to find your real level of earnings.
Also, I hate to throw this in, but please think about the effect doing adult work can have on your life down the line. Right now your BF dreads his job and you are paid a low training wage, but make sure the adult industry is the right choice for you, and not just a desperation choice.
On a more cheerful note: welcome to the camming world! Read this forum inside and out, it has so much information to make your cam life awesome.
I quit my job (I made $20 hourly before) and now I make much more. In the beginning, not so much (wasn't very predictable). I'd cry a lot because of the stress, but now so so happy I quit. After a year, I know now how much I'll make on most weeks. It's hard to login sometimes if I'm feeling down, but just be disciplined. I'm paying for both my BF, our dogs, and our rent, but he's going to work a vanilla job while I cam very soon to help out more.
Something to consider... you're both young and have no major commitments. Now. What happens years from now?
I'm asking you this because I myself got into the adult industry as a young person with no major commitments... and here I am 10 years later. While I love my job in this industry for many, many reasons... I am now stuck with nothing except 10 years in adult entertainment and NO other work history in the "real wold" to enable me to go out and get another job (if I wanted to or needed to, which I don't). But it's something to think about. It's very hard to get attached and rely on the income from adult work, and then you end up one day trying to figure out how you're going to get out of adult work when the time comes. There are way too many other qualified employees that employers would hire based on their years of experience, vs you who would by that time have none in whatever job you may try to get in the future. Many employers don't like to see a gap in employment, and unless you tell them about your past camming jobs, you would look as though you didn't work for the past however many years. Add to that, you would be self employed in camming, and I have heard that many employers are weary of previously self employed people regardless of what the self employed work was.
