hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
from
(snip)"MEPs will next week vote on a "ban on all forms of pornography" including censorship of the internet in a bid to "eliminate gender stereotypes" that demean women."(snip)
(snip)"Controversy has erupted over next Tuesday's European Parliament resolution "on eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU", meant to mark international women's day, after libertarian Swedish MEPs from the Pirate Party spotted the call for a ban in the small print.
While not legally binding, the vote could be the first step towards European legislation as the EU's assembly increasingly flexes its political muscle within Europe's institutions.
The proposal "calls on the EU and its member states to take concrete action on discrimination against women in advertising... [with] a ban on all forms of pornography in the media".
Kartika Liotard, a Dutch left-wing feminist MEP, is seeking "statutory measures to prevent any form of pornography in the media and in advertising and for a ban on advertising for pornographic products and sex tourism", including measures in the "digital field".
The MEPs are also demanding the establishment of state sex censors with "a mandate to impose effective sanctions on companies and individuals promoting the sexualisation of girls". "(snip)
Unlike US based proposals i.e. SOPA / PIPA which are proposing to restrict access to certain websites based on economic issues ( i.e. copyrighted material ), this European vote appears to want to restrict access to certain websites because they 'promote the sexualization of girls'.
It would be appreciated if some of the euro based camgirls can let us know how 'serious' this vote turns out to be.

Re: hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
Wow. I must say, I'm a bit surprised to see this in Europe, especially from a Dutch citizen. By girls, are they focusing on young girls or young women in general?
-
Re: hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
I can't see people going for this in the EU. I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
"Iceland is currently debating radical proposals that would make it the first Western democracy to attempt censorship of the internet by blocking online pornography.
The Icelandic government is considering introducing internet filters, such as those used to block China off form the worldwide web, in order to stop people downloading or viewing pornography on the internet.
The unprecedented censorship is justified by fears about damaging effects of the internet on children and women."
And this!!!!! Hmmm, I understand that perhaps your average teen may not be able to figure it out, but do they not realize that just as in China people are able to get around these "filters"?
It's a very interesting discussion though, and one I have brought up before. If you consider the pornography I found as a kid (the occasional stashed Penthouse, softcore on Cinemax, a friend's parent's vanilla porno) compared to what young people now find quite effortlessly on line, you must ask what some of the effects of more extreme porn will start showing up 5-10-15 years from now. That HAS to do something to the sexual awakening of a young person... being fed a steady diet of the more hardcore, extreme, fetish porn that is becoming more common place for free EVERYWHERE on line.
But at this point, it's out there. Can't really unring that bell.

Re: hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
Holy. FUCK...
I read: "Happy International Women's Day! Here! Let us celebrate that by removing your right as a woman to either watch or participating in porn. Say goodbye to your jobs, sex working ladies! Have a great day!"
Fuck them. In the ass. Hard.
How "demeaning" is it to women to deprive them of their rights?

Likely.
The mention of Iceland actually links pretty strongly to prominent anti-porn feminist Gail Dines - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTgsGjWKtio (this guy's pro-porn arguments are awesome btw), which is pretty scary.

doesn't mean it actually correct!

You CANNOT say thing about this industry like that, unless you have seen it from the inside. Sure, girls do come along that are absolute train wrecks, but I know for a fact that a LOT of girls love their job, have high self esteem, and wouldn't have it any other way!

Re: hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
People NEED to get into their thick craniums that THIS:
"Hi, I'm female and I love to be degraded, spanked, called a "dirty little slut" as a part of my personal CONSENSUAL, healthy, enjoyable sex life"
AND THIS:
"Hi, I'm female and I am degraded, spanked, called a "dirty little slut" as a part of my personal CONSENSUAL, healthy, enjoyable job"
...should be respected as the simplest of human rights.
Being female does NOT mean that I need or require someone else's twisted idea of "protection" under laws that actually take away my rights.
The people who wave these flags of what *I* am supposed to find degrading (because I have a vagina), and go out of their way in selfish attempts to get rid of them are themselves deplorable, demeaning, sexist pieces of horse shit. I'm sorry, but I'm not sorry. I hate waking up one morning to see more and more people trying their damndest to take away my job and my rights under the guise of fucking feminism of all things.

Re: hopefully this will come to nothing - EU pornography censorship
here's the provisions which should be the most worrysome to camgirls ... from
(snip)"Christian Engström, an MEP and deputy leader of the Swedish Pirate Party, noted yesterday that while the goals of the Committee are "of course very laudable", as always, "the devil is in the detail". Engström writes: "This is quite clearly yet another attempt to get the internet service providers to start policing what citizens do on the internet, not by legislation, but by 'self-regulation'. This is something we have seen before in a number of different proposals, and which is one of the big threats against information freedom in our society."
Engström worries that the resolution would refer just as much to naked pictures that people send each other as professional pornography, as well as any kind of pornography included in private communications via email or social networks -- "an attempt to circumvent the article on information freedom in the European Convention of Human Rights"."(snip)
Indeed this 'self-policing' by ISP's is similar to the provisions of US based SOPA / PIPA, in that it would place internet service providers in the position of potentially cutting off access by internet users they serve to certain websites 'deemed' to be violating something or other ( euro = pornography, US = unauthorized retransmission of copyrighted material ) as a CYA measure.
Some of my gentlemen business acquaintances are looking at this is a possible extra-legal means of implementing 'trade protectionism'. In other words, Iceland could mandate that Icelandic ISP's cut off internet access to US based adult websites / webcams on the basis of 'accusation', while still allowing internet access to Icelandic based adult websites / webcams.
I'm also still hoping that all of this internet access restriction stuff is so far 'out there' that it 'could never happen'. However, based on many other things that were also far 'out there' as to have been thought impossible actually happening these days, I'm no longer very secure in that hope. And this would especially be the case when the 'impossible' actually happening would contribute extra money to the coffers of countries allowing it to happen.

As a woman, a feminist and sex worker, I'll have to disagree. I have been all of those things for more than decade. The are as many different types of feminists as there are women. Yes there are anti-porn feminists, but I don't see how it's so pro-woman to demonize and entire group, that would maybe be like demonizing all sex-workers. Maybe hang with some pro-porn feminists, some time. Because frankly as a feminist who has spent a lot of her time working for women's sexual freedom and autonomy this feminist hate rubs me the wrong way.
