Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
Myth: High speed Internet is a must. You must also have an I-7 processor. Buy the Logitech 9000, 920 or 910. Invest in your computer stuff. You can't make money with your built in cam(omg! How dare you use a built-in!)
Unpopular Opinion: Hi(raises my hand). I'm a pretty successful camgirl. Ummmm...I have to admit I have normal Internet & use a Dell notebook I bought used for $165. I've been meaning to upgrade but I kinda never got around to it. I use my built-in cam & do pretty well(don't judge me, shrug lol).
-
Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
I still do think it's well worth upgrading, but I've always advised new cammers to go ahead and start with whatever they have to work with.
Why invest a lot of cash before you really know how you will like it and whether or not you will do well?

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
This is a great idea for a thread! I love it!
Myth: You *have* to greet and say hi to everyone who comes into your free chat.
Fact: Every girl hustles different. For some girls greeting every guy who comes in will make them bank. For other girls, they have better luck when they don't greet anyone at all.

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
Myth: Getting guys to rate and admire your MFC profile will help your camscore.
That doesn't do a thing for your cam score...only tokens help your cam score. Be sure to point this out to the next knucklehead on MFC who thinks he deserves a free flash just for rating/admiring your profile...lol.
Myth: 1 token tips hurt your cam score.
This is false, and it's silly. There is no such thing as a bad tip. MFC does frown upon 1-token tips though...when you try to tip 1 token, you'll get a pop-up message recommending that you don't tip just 1 token.
I like this thread. :) I'll post more if I can think of anything else.

The rate & admire one always makes me lol when they do that!

Investing in these things aren't myths or lies... If you are taking your business seriously, you will invest in it, and those things not only hugely improve your work supplies, but they make your work life a hell of a lot easier to know that nothing is going to crash, and your stream isn't going to fuck up. < Which, when those things happened to me, with an old laptop and average-speed internet, drove me batshit insane because I couldn't rely on my shit to hold up enough for me to earn. It's horrible when your equipment lets you down so much you don't even know if you will be able to do your job that night.
Blame Streamate for the i7 processor thing - they outright advise their models that level of tech. Streamate is a site which likes to boast about the quality of it's cams, which is why I could work on Streamate and have issues, then go over to MFC and have none whatsoever - the requirements are not always the same. And so in this way, the urgency with which you "need" those things depends on the requirements of which site you are working, and the decency of what you already have to start with.

The thing that I find crazy is that the lower I have my frame rate the higher my placement.
*shakes her head*
I just don't get it.

I don't use the encoder & my money on Streamate is fine. That's why I refer to it as a myth. I've never checked my placement. I just log on & sit & make $ lol.

It's a myth to me personally & my answer is an unpopular opinion.

Oh you can still make money without the encoder, just you tend to make a lot more with it because it takes your placement up. No one will tell you that you will make NOTHING without it, lol! XD That would be a lie!
But I'm certainly not going to reach the top 3 rows on SM without it. I was still able to make money without it, but not as much as I make with it.

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
I think high-speed internet IS a must. If your stream is choppy, no one's going to have a good time - especially if you're indie.
Anyway..
Myth: You have to be "hot" to make money as a cam girl.
this is such BS, because everyone has a different idea of what "hot" is. Any girl who's hard-working, smart, and personable can be a successful cam girl.
Myth: Guys don't want to hear you talk about anything but sex.
Also BS. Guys in your room want to know you. They want to know what you like, what you do in your spare time, etc. I can't tell you how many times guys say "Man, i really like that you actually have conversations in your room and don't just say "Oh yea daddy i'm so horny for you! private now?".

Hmmm, now you have got me curious.
I am going to have to cam without my encoder someday next week and see how bad my placement tanks.
For science!

And your built-in. In the morning light with no make up. Look like an amateur that doesn't know anything. Oh...and don't do toys. You will love it! Lol.

I could never NOT wear makeup on SM. It is part of my hustle there to be able to bank.
I never wear it on MFC though. I bank more without it!

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
Lie: It's Shark Week. I can't work! I'm just going to lie on the couch & watch Netflix. And I need money too:(!
Unpopular Opinion: My bills don't stop because I'm bleeding. Do yours?(must not have a husband, kids, home, school, probation, drug habit, weave or nail habit, shopping habit)
1. Invest in baby wipes, red towel & black toy. Wear booty shorts with a pad. You can still bang yourself in private. Remember, you control what the cam sees.
2. Or no penetration. Take advantage of bigger than normal swollen boobs. Titty fuck your toy, then give it a blow job. Dirty talk. When they ask for toy use you can a. Refuse b. tell them you're on your period. They may understand or still want to see(ewww! Weirdos!)
Take it easy on yourself. Lay on the couch with the cam pointed to your boobs & watch Netflix.
True story...the best week I ever had I did no penetration & was very ill. I stayed logged on though.
Good luck BB's

Exactly what I wanted to write. I'm still in the process of signing up to SM, but I worked on MFC for a while and I noticed that while some guys seemed to absolutely love talking to me and rave about how awesome I am, these are usually not the guys who tipped a lot/initiated a group/took me private. There would be the occasional guy who'd love to talk to me AND tip me, but these guys are rare and when they DO come, they suddenly tip a shitload of money. But that's just my experience, and, as I said, on MFC. Don't know if it's different on SM.
(You are spot-on about the "you don't have to be classically "hot" to cam", though.)
-
Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
About what y'all are talking about...does she realize that guys also tell "Us" what they think "We" would like to hear sometimes? Just like we do to them?
They're in my room & like "I love brunettes"...skip to the next room "I love blondes!" Lol

Enough that I still haven't quit camming yet.
This is a sales job. you need to build relationships with your potential buyers, just like you would if you sold cell phones for a living. You're more likely to sell a phone to someone if they can relate to you and feel as though they can trust you, and camming is no different. It doesn't always pay off on that exact date, but I can't tell you how many times I've had an awesome room discussion going, and then two or three days later, some of those guys come back and spend a good chunk of their paycheck on me.
I don't turn down private shows just to talk or anything. if no one's taking me into a show anyway, how does it hurt me at all to carry on a conversation about hockey, movies, Doctor Who, or anything? Oh, that's right!...not at all Every 10 or so minutes I'll remind them "Hey, if you like the conversation, tip! or if you'd like to play, I'm so ready for a private!", and I'd say 75% of the time, it works. I haven't quit yet after 6 straight months of camming 5 or so days a week on SM, so i'd say whatever I'm doing works pretty well.
I've said this before, but I think there's a difference between someone who's a genuine fan, and enjoys being in your room, doesn't ask for anything, doesn't discourage you from doing shows, but only tips once in a while or only joins Gold Shows sometimes, versus a guy who's like "wow you're so fun. I love your room..shame I'm so broke..would be nice if you gave a good fan a treat...". THOSE guys get the boot. THOSE are freeloaders.

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
I agree with Jaana about it being a myth that cam girls must talk about sex at all times. I'm not gonna be in free chat for 2-3 hours giving guys free dirty talk and free details about the time I lost my virginity, etc. I'm not knocking other models who do it. If that works for them and gets them more paid shows, cool. Guys asking you 50 questions about your pussy, your favorite position, your first time are sitting there jerking off to your detailed answers. MFC is known for models and members being chatty with one another, talking about a variety of things: their interests, their plans for the weekend, etc. The guys who are only there for free sex talk are probably not gonna tip, and probably won't take you private either. But I bet they got their hand on their cock listening to you describe your sexcapades in full detail. :P
Your photo on the homepage is what gets guys interested in visiting your room. Once they're there, your personality/your interaction what keeps them there and keeps them coming back. It's unrealistic and silly to expect a cam model to be talking about sex, sex, and more sex the entire time she's in free chat. I like it when members tip me to flash, and stay in my room and chat about music, food, etc. :)

Yeah, a long time ago I had a habit of staying on cam too long, letting guys talk me to death without tipping. And they whined when I said I was getting ready to log off. People like that don't respect the fact that this is a job (it's not a free chat room hobby). They seem to think we should stay on cam longer because they want us to (that's selfish). People like that don't care about our cam scores or our need to earn a living. "You're leaving? Aw, but I just got here." *rolls eyes*

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
Myth: My regulars only see me and/or belong to me
Reality: Lol c'mon, son
Myth: Phone, content, affiliate marketing, and/or freechat optional sites are dead
Reality: Nah
Myth: Customers stay within one niche of performers
Reality: Ridiculous and awesome how many people I share customers with who I have little in common with
Myth: Customer compliments are truth
Reality: Stay focused on your hustle, dont get arrogant abt fleeting compliments bc thatll slow you down
Myth: If someone tells me theyre successful and speaks authoritatively about certain subjects, they are tried and true sages, and I should listen to them.
Reality: I learned this the hard way: unless the person has immediate name recognition, it ... may not be true. It may be but if theyre really aggressive about it... ehhhhhhhhh. There are a fair amount of wannabes who spend a lot of time lurking/stanning for fulltime cammers, dancers, escorts, PSOs, etc whose knowledge of 'what to do' is mostly vicarious. Basically, just bc someone speaks authoritatively doesnt mean they know wtf theyre talking about. Be shrewd about how you use (and waste) your time or you may end up in a timesuck with a delusional narcissist whose mindblowing success is illusory.
Myth: A friend of mine is un or underemployed, they should just cam, right?
Reality: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Myth: Because I am a camgirl I dont have to pay other camgirls for their time
Reality: If they arent your friends.... offer it? Especially if youre asking them things that they arent openly offering and are soliciting them 1-on-1 that are time-intensive, complicated, idea-poaching, etc. If theyre a friend or youre acquainted, it is a bit different, but if they arent: c''mon son. People inundating other models with questions is part of the reason why I 100% understand why models start virtual studios? They end up compensated for their time for it? So... offer, a lot of people do so you can also?
Myth: Anyone can do non-nude and/or be a financial domme and/or be completely indie and be mega-successful at it.
Reality: Secrets of the entrepreneurial samurai warrior here, amirite? If it was easy and had a massive market, then all of us would do it.
Myth: Project a stereotypical version of wealth and youll attract wealth
Reality: Trashy has a market, lol, seriously. So if you have a rough edge, dont break yourself trying to hide it.

Re: Camgirl Myths, Lies & Unpopular Opinions
Okay, I feel like there should be some clarification in this thread.
If ONE camgirl finds that she has an opposite belief than the normal 'camgirl canon' then this does INDEED make it a myth.
Please refer to the 'Mythbusters' TV for more information on how little is needed to bust something as a myth. (*laughs*)

^^^^ YES!
Oddly enough, my regulars who always take me private never spend time in my room. They come for their private time with me, leave a nice tip afterwards and then they're on merry their way. So waiting on private shows can get boring if it's slow. Because of that, I actually like my regulars who hang out in my room but can only tip smaller amounts or only tip large amounts infrequently but NEVER ask for freebies. They are what keeps me from losing my mind when it's slow because they talk to me, they keep conversation fluid, they're respectful, and they make me laugh. Oh, they also tend to run off the real freeloaders before I even get a chance to. They're like, my friends
And, as Jaana pointed out, when they do have the funds they will generally come back and show you some love. When I first started I had a guy coming into my room every time I was on. He didn't tip but he was the only guy actually carrying on a conversation with me and not asking for free flashes or anything else from me, and he was really cool, so I let him stick around. Glad I did too. Because about a week later I logged on and he popped in briefly and said, "hey I'm on my way out the door but I just wanted to say hi." And then he dropped 3500 tokens and left. He's not the only one this has happened with either.
So, yeah, as long as you're not ignoring higher paying customers and the guys are respectful and fun to chat with -- what's the harm?
I'm not referring to chatting about anything sexually arousing, just to clarify...I mean just bullshitting about everyday stuff :)
