Can cam quality degrade with time?
I have a logitech 9000. It's a good couple years old. The settings aren't any different from what they used to be, although I've played with them and it doesn't help. I used to stream a nice, clear sharp image even with mediocre internet. Now, my image is fairly fuzzy even after upgrading to the max speeds available in my area. Even my video recording quality is severely degraded, especially when using zoom. I went ahead and ordered the c920 anyways because I want an HD cam to go w/ my new internet but I'm just curious as to what has happened with my 9000.
Settings issue, internet issue, or do cams actually fade with age? /:O
Thanks ^_^
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
The same thing happened to my logitech 9000 after a couple years. No matter what computer I used it on (and I have a powerful i7 with superfast internet) it started to look like crap both for streaming and filming video. Video quality was WAY worse than when I first got it, and cleaning/adjustments didn't make any difference.
In the beginning when I bought it, it looked a bit grainier than my 910 but still decent, but by the end it looked like embarrassingly grainy garbage. It wasn't really a slow decline either, it just looked ok one day and like crap the next and never recovered.
I also upgraded to the 920. Been really happy with it for camming, but now I use a camcorder for videos (because the type of compression the 920 uses to record video makes the audio glitch sometimes with my favorite video editing program).
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
Not sure about the overall quality, but I have the 9000 for... I'd say, 3 years now, and about a year ago it started going in and out of focus randomly. So, yeah. I definitely don't have the money the upgrade now; might do so when I start camming again.
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
I've had my 9000 for at least a couple years now and yeah, my stream is fuzzy and not crisp. The little stand for it is broken too, so I have to be careful when I move it around. It's time for an upgrade!

Yeah mine does that too! I have to cover the lens with my finger briefly to get it to refocus.
I'm glad to hear it's not just me, seems to be a general issue with the 9000. Glad I made the decision to upgrade, and especially glad I saved all my amazon gift cards! My new cam will be here Tuesday ^_^
HD streaming here I come! :D

And yes, Bird of Paradise, it seemed to be a sudden switch. I've never dropped it, never really done shower shows so haven't exposed it to moisture..the only thing I did to it was drop it in an oven, but that was ages ago and it was working fine after that. It's been sitting in storage a year and half and was fine when I pulled it out but about 2 weeks in..crap quality overnight.
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
I know that this is probably not your problem, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
My camera was really fuzzy and out of focus for a while and I couldn't figure what was wrong with it.
It turned out that the problem was with touching it all the time with coconut oil on my hands. A film of oil had built up on the camera lens and was making my image blurry! After I cleaned the film off then everything went back to looking normal. :D
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
Thanks for the suggestion, but I have tried cleaning it. It's not so much out of focus as the image is grainy and really low quality. It does go out of focus at random, but that fixes automatically by poking the lens. It's weird. I just gotta deal til Tuesday when my new HD cam arrives. I'm kinda happy I have an excuse to upgrade lol

I figured it wasn't the issue you were having, but thought I'd mention it so you'd at least be able to get a laugh out of it. ;)
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
Yes lol I understand about the oil buildup... my poor laptop... haha
Re: Can cam quality degrade with time?
Pretty sure I have the same thing happening to my Lifecam Cinema HD.
It's supposed to be "HD"... It just ain't so anymore. It has this weird "sharp n grainy" feel to the picture quality now, with missing details. Pretty bad..
Not really sure what I should upgrade to though! I was thinking Logitech 9000.. but only really because I don't feel like a proper camgirl without one (lol I know), aaaaaand what's been said about them here has kind of put me off, although I guess all cams have an expiry date, but a year or so feels like too soon! Blahhh though I guess I'll upgrade within a couple more years anyway.
