I'm about to be homeless...
I was planning on moving to another city to be closer to my boyfriend who is going to school.
I dragged my feet because of no particular reason--just procrastination. That and last year it
was really easy for me to find a place to live so I was hoping this year would be the same.
In any event, there were a few possible places but they were all charging more than I thought
they should OR they wouldn't have what I was looking for ready for another month. The rest
of the area was pretty shitty/shady looking.
I had a chat with my apartment complex and they said, sure-- you can renew here either doing
a short-term rental or do the 12 months. It's up to you. We need to know by the 18th (today.)
However, what I had forgotten was that they also said something about cancelling my intent
to move, so without that they rented out my apartment this past tuesday (two days ago.) I found
out about this this morning when I went to the office to sign the paperwork.
There's a few options--
1. I renew for a different apartment in this same complex, but they said that in order to do this
I would have to run another application and do the admin fee, etcetera.
If I have to move my stuff (even if it's across the way)
AND have to pay all the extra bullshit despite being a model resident for the past year, I would
rather put that money towards a different apartment closer to my boyfriend. It's one thing if it's
easy to stay here, but the more hoops I have to jump through in order to stay here, I'd rather just
jump through those same hoops to live elsewhere.
2. I don't think I have enough money to move into one of the nice apartments (there's one but I feel
they're overcharging by about $100/month and they're not offering any specials) right this second.
3. My boyfriend will have a house in a month and I could always crash at his place now if I need to but
he drives me crazy when we spend too much time together. It's a nice option but....
This leaves me with option #4 if the complex isn't willing to fix things to where I either a) stay in my
own apartment, or b) stay in the complex but don't pay all a new admin fee/app fee plus whatever
else they want me to pay.
4. I put my stuff into storage (I actually have a storage unit here that's only half full so I can throw out
some of my stuff, and store the rest for a month) and either go travel, or go rent a weekly/monthly
motel in the next town over closest to my boyfriend and check out the clubs there.
I'm not really looking for advice, unless you have some advice on how to make the apartment let me
keep my apartment that I currently have or drop all the extra fee b.s. for moving into a different apartment.
Can't tell my boyfriend at the moment because things like this stress him the fuck out, whereas I just roll
with it and figure it out as I go. I was rather stupid and should have figured this shit out in June when I had
a nice big wad in my checking account. On the flip side though, I have been meaning to go on a trip, and
I wouldn't necessarily mind "stretching my legs" with my shit in storage.
But boy, am I not looking forward to boxing stuff up and cleaning and moving stuff to storage :(
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
Hey! We're in the same boat! (kinda) My lease ends in 3 days, and I'm putting all my stuff in storage and moving into a motel for a couple weeks, then going on a trip around the east coast in August/September. If only someone else would pack all my crap. *sigh* I'm procrastinating right now.
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
I've just recently discovered living in hotels with a weekly rate, I think it's awesome. Maybe this situation is a blessing in disguise, and you can just take the opportunity to consolidate your obligations and like you said, "stretch your legs"
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
Yeah, luckily I'm not really attached to things so I'm giving my boyfriend's friend some furniture, rugs, and books. Mostly it's just laziness-
I know it makes more financial sense to go to a motel, and I actually am looking forward to THAT. It's doing the heavy stuff like moving
my washer/dryer to storage, going through my stuff to get rid of stuff or donate whatever the friend doesn't want.
Moving is such a pain in the ass. If I wasn't squicked out at the idea of having someone else pack all my shit up, I'd have no problem paying
someone a few hundred dollars to just dump all my shit into boxes and walk them down to the storage building.
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
omg I'm cleaning out what's left of my belongings now too LOL I'm planning on hitting the road in a couple of weeks to live on the road for once. I've been selling most of my dvds , books, nicknacks on craigslist. What few things I am keeping though is gonna be dropped off at my mum's in storage & I'll retrieve it once I get this wonder lust out of my system :) I've never done this before so it's exciting getting rid of stuff & living out of a few bags.
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
I've done it a few times before but not really while I've had my boyfriend (though I have gone on 1month trips while he's watched my baby-- my dog.) My pile of "to donate" is growing like the blob. *sigh*

That's what I did when I broke my lease! It was super easy. Only mine ended up being a 6 month thing since I will be moving August 1.
You can actually get a service that will pack your stuff and put it in storage for you! That's what I did. They (4 guys) packed the rest of what I didn't pack in like 1 hour and then took it to storage where it will remain til I move into my new place. It was worth it :)
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
I'm already almost halfway done and will be pretty close to done once boyfriend and boyfriend's friend come over tonight to load up the few pieces of furniture being given away/moving the washer/dryer down to storage. I think when all is said and done I'll be able to fit everything into ten medium-to-large boxes, so that's actually an achievement. Granted, I have a bunch of crap/clothes over at boyfriend's house, but still. Go me for not being as pack-ratty as in previous years. I'm trying to have everything packed up tomorrow so I can clean Saturday and finally "check out" Sunday (but if I need to, be able to clean some more Saturday.)
I have some rouge-stains in the carpet from some spilled makeup. Should I carpet clean myself knowing they'll be carpet cleaning also? or do apartments tear out carpet after a one-year tenant? (I'm at a nice apartment in the nice expensive part of town so I would thinnnnnk so but not sure.) I don't even remember how much my deposit is honestly.
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
^^ IME it usually actually costs you more to get the carpets cleaned yourself than if you just let them take some money out of your deposit. I'm guessing a lot of apartment complexes probably get a deal with the cleaning companies, especially if a lot of people move out around the same time and they do multiple places in one day. But maybe check with your landlord and ask how much will get taken out of your deposit and then check with a local company to compare the price of doing it yourself.
If it is cheaper to DIY, make sure to get proof that you had it done and give it to your landlord to make sure they don't take money out of your deposit to have it done again on top of you already paying for it out of pocket. And check to make sure they don't have some rule about how it having to be a certain company so they're sure it was done to their professional specifications. I think my last apartment had some weird thing about it.

Was this a local or national company? What was it? Because that sounds fabulous!
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
No, I mean rent one of these for around $25
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/asse...398127966c.jpg
I get them from Lowe's. Don't get the red ones from the grocery stores unless you have no other choice. The green one's kick the red one's ass (and I've used both.)
I don't know if the last place my boyfriend and I rented together was just going to rip up the carpets anyway (they should have but I don't know) but we didn't get charged for carpets--the only reason I can think of (and what saved my sanity during certain months that year) were the green machines I'd rent every 3-4 months or so.
His dog is a secret pee-er, and she would ALWAYS pee on this one section of ten by ten rug that was next to a huge window that faced the afternoon sun. It'd get so hot that leftover pee (even though we cleaned it up and put vinegar down to neutralize the smell which helped a lot) would just BAKE leaving that room smelling like piss.
After a couple hours of on-and-off cleaning with hot water and vinegar in the green machine, that carpet had no smell at all. It was great!
I occasionally babysit my bf's dog, so there might be one pee spot since I'm completely strict on her not having access to the carpets if I need to step out longer than fifteen minutes. I'm more just worried about the rouge spots, but there's a couple other light mystery spots-- shaded parts of the carpet just a few inches here or there, so I'm planning on getting the green machine today and using it when I want a break in packing.
This is everything I have left to do:
1. either actually donate my pile, or toss it. half done
2. wash anything else that needs washing before being stored (bedding and sheets.) done
3. bookcase and lamp my boyfriend wants gets over to his place
4. rent a dolly from u-haul ($8 ish) and move washer/dryer to storage. done. woot!
5. clean bathroom (small job)
6. Get boxes and just put everything IN the boxes (it's so much easier to pack when I just put all the shit in
boxes and then go through each box and downsize boxes from there, plus it gets everything off counters and floor)
7. Rent and start doing the green-machine
8. Sweep and mop and bleach treat any stains on the hard-floor (I have some hair dye spots from manic panic so if anyone knows how to remove, let me know)
9.clean kitchen (big job)
10. clean washer/dryer alcove (small job)
11. take boxes down to storage and play sokoban. 1/3 done
That's everything I have left to do. If I can do half of that today, I'll still be WAY ahead and might finish everything by afternoon tomorrow which is a full 24 hours early.
then I guess I just need to call the electricity company and internet and cancel services.
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
I only have a few rubbermaid storage containers of stuff left not including my clothes which I want to comb thru one more time & liquidate what I don't really need. I've got a few stripper outfits I'm selling also. I like not having alot of things for once, makes it so much easier to just get up & go :p
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
I had something like that happen to me a couple of years ago. My husband was offered a job in another city, then the company was bought out and the job disappeared with the reorganization. The apartment we were living in came with extra free parking, so it was rented out very quickly after we put our notice in. The complex let us move into another (smaller, less parking) unit, but we had to pay the deposits and fees again. It was a little tight financially until the refund check came back from the previous unit. Normally, the deposits and fees would just transfer, but the complex had also been sold to a new management company, so all the paperwork had to done over again.
I hope everything works out and you find just the right place at just the right price. :)
Re: I'm about to be homeless...
ugggggghhhh, I don't want to clean my kitchen OR my bathroom. I keep vacuuming because I find it so peaceful and easy. It's a shame my place looks so great right before I'm leaving!
