Best big cities to live in?
Hey guys I'm new to the forum. Found this place a few months ago and just joined. I have been visiting strip clubs ever since the late 1990's though and love adult entertainers!
I wanted to know...what do you think is the best U.S. big city to live in?

http://www.city-data.com/
There is a wealth of information on that site, and discussion boards about most cities.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
Depends on what you are looking for in said city. Half the places on your list would be a great place to be... but it all depends on what matters to you most.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
In fact big city is not good for live, but it is more convenience!

Re: Best big cities to live in?
Actually big cities are great to live in because they offer career opportunities, nightlife, dating choices, restaurants, events, good quality of life in some places and many housing opportunities. So it depends on what you're looking for and decide based off what cities have the best if what you want in life. The 4 largest cities in the US is New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
^^^True enough, but if you don't like crowds, traffic, or having to drive a long way to work even without traffic, the cities can be stifling. if the city is dirty and/or has a high crime rate, also not good. Real estate rates and parking issues can also be disadvantageous in several big cities. But those issues are a serious drawback of living on this little island as well.
Speaking of crime rates, why is Detroit even on the list? :D
I grew up there, don't take offense.
The one thing I miss about cities is being able to buy anything you want at 4:30 AM.
Funny, I used to LOVE Chicago except it was so goddamned fucking cold in the winter--plus no trace of the wind (whence it gets the title 'Windy City' because it helps freeze your ass off all winter) in the summer months when it is too hot. But when I visited there at length several times a few years ago for business (architectural illustration not DJing), I was not nearly so impressed.
Austin rules. Best place I have lived except Key West.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
Austin is a college town. To me the best city in Texas is Houston.
-
Re: Best big cities to live in?
I visited Houston a few times and wasn't crazy about it--but more power to you if you like it. I don't like the idea of having to drive a long way for work, especially and Houston is one of those 'spread out' cities. Also it was just as hot as Austin in summer (fucking hot lol), but more humid. Kind of like Florida is really too humid.
I liked the fact that Austin was a college town (except for the days they had football games and driving anywhere near campus sucked). Not that I was crazy about tens of thousands of 18-22 year olds. But the emphasis on education and the Arts was a big plus in my mind.

Shhh Djoser... I want less people to move to Austin not more LOL.
I forgot that you lived in Detroit. I live on the outskirts for 3 years there when I was a kid.

I don't consider Austin a college town. Sure there is a huge University here and several other schools, but there is so much else here that this place isn't a ghost town when college isn't in session. Austin is a hot bed of tech and music. Places like Madison WI, Ann Arbor MI and State College PA... THOSE are college towns.
Houston is a sprawling mess. It's LA without the mountains or entertainment industry. Sure it's got a great nightlife and is arguably one of the top cities in the U.S. for strip clubs, plus it's cheap to buy a house there but it's way too crowded.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
The Austin music scene is truly amazing. I bet there are more musicians per 1000 residents than even NYC.
Yeah I am from Detroit--7 Mile & Southfield Freeway (not Southfield the outlying suburb but right down in the city).
I always have to laugh at Eminem acting streetwise about 8 Mile. Though truth be told I got my street smarts in Chicago, I was just a kid in Detroit.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
Oh yeah, we have more musicians per capita than anywhere in the U.S. for big cities, with possibly the exception of Nashville.
Where in Chicago did you live? BTW I hate that city ;)
-
Re: Best big cities to live in?
I am not going to blame you for hating Chicago, trust me. Though it would seem incontrovertible that it is vastly superior to Detroit. :D
I lived in Hyde Park on the South Side for 5 years. 4 years as an undergrad at University of Chicago, and an extra year staying and waiting for my fiance at the time to graduate (she was a year later than me). At the time it was even worse than it is now as far as crime on the South Side.
The University of Chicago fortunately had massive clout and a huge Security Police force to protect us little nerd students. They had the third largest police force in the entire state of Illinois, second only to the Illinois State Troopers and the Chicago Police. Probably still the 3rd largest, though perhaps one of the other cities in Illinois has taken over that dubious honor since I left.
I used to ride the El Trains all over the city in the middle of the night with a friend, just for fun. No way would I do that now even if I could probably kick three of my own 19 year old asses at once lol. But ironically enough it might be more dangerous for me to try it now (not that I will). I am much more a target, a little less streetwise from living in at least marginally safer areas since then, and less inclined to laugh off bullshit than I was then.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
That's actually a cool little area... good school too. Just too bad you had some serious shit to the south and west of you there.
-
Re: Best big cities to live in?
Well it is a lot safer now than it was when I was there. For one thing the University has been steadily buying up as much land around it as possible in the years since then, torn down all the ratty rundown housing after buying it, and has blocked off several of the streets running south into the worst of the South Side.
I made friends with some of the locals and kind of liked pushing the edge (far more than I would now), meaning going outside the campus area where we could at least probably get the UC cops if something nasty developed. It was kind of funny to go back there and on a little trip to a nearby club outside Hyde Park, I knew I didn't have that inner city edge any more.

I'm from Miami born and raised. I almost selected Miami out of loyalty but decided to be honest instead. It can be a hard city to crack for out of towners. And to be honest it can be completely shocking and damaging if you lack self control. But in regards to US cities (i prefer global locals) I would say that North Carolina and Virginia is looking pretty good if you want to be settled for a few years. Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte are getting better by the year. Lots of people with disposable income. Alexandria,Va is another spot to look at.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
This all depends on what you hope to get out of a particular city. If you want to work in theater, NYC is about the only place to be. Ditto with finance. If you have political aspirations, you may want to find yourself in Washington DC. Wanna be a movie star? Duh! Hollywood.
The best place to be a stripper may be Las Vegas or Dallas. This is a very personal question and will really depend on the person answering what the right answer should be.

Trust me I know about Austin's live music scene, I grew up watching Austin City Limits.
And Austin is actually a lot hotter than Houston in the summer time, Houston's relative humidity is just a bit higher than Austin but not hotter, and it's much colder than Houston in the winter time. Not to mention, Austin is a part of the tornado alley and Houston isn't! As far as art and education goes, Houston actually has 17 school districts located within the City of Houston, with HISD being the seventh largest in the US. HISD(Houston Independent School Distruct) has 112 campuses that serve as magnet and vanguard schools with many specialities in those. Not to mention, there are plenty of charter schools in addition to some of the public schools who also have their own private charter schools, with over 300 private schools in the city. 4 distinct universities, several private Universities such as Rice University and a host of community colleges located here with University of Houston being a nationally recognised tier 1 research university and flagship institution to the University of Houston School System. I graduated from University of Houston Downtown campus. :). University of Houston is also the 3rd largest university in Texas. There's an entire museum, arts and cultural dedication here known as the Museum District which includes 19 museums. Also the nasa space center is located here and Houston also has the worlds largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions. The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States waterborne tonnage handled and second in the total cargo tonnage handled. Houston also has an active visual and performing arts in the theatre district. Also another factor some people may have not known about Houston, we are the second to NYC having the most Fortune 500 companies located here! There's a lot people don't know about Houston such as also Houston's Memorial Park is one of the largest urban parks in the US and is larger than new yorks Central Park. Memorial park also has a 18 hole golf course on it with a few restaurants by the clubhouse as well such as Becks Prime and Smoothie King. Yes the traffic can be bad in Houston but that's mainly if you live in the suburbs trying to get home on the freeways in rush hour traffic! Trust me living within or around the loop and working there also, or working where you live, you won't really deal with backed up traffic. It's just if you have to commute far is when you have to deal with the brutal traffic. He wanted a big city, so I'm giving a big city with much information on it that most people usually don't know about it. Houston is a great city. I'm a magnet to big cities such as Houston, New York, LA, etc because I'm a city girl although I'm a southern belle born and raised in the south. So hope this clears up the down play on Houston! :) Happy trails.

Great post Anacol... you've taught me something new for sure.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
Cities offer economic and other opportunities. They are not good places to live. If you have to live in a city in Texas, Houston is the one to live in, or near.
Austin should have been left to the Comanches.

Re: Best big cities to live in?
Well I loved Austin but I learned a lot of good things about Houston just now!
I'd still move back to Austin gladly if there was a good opening and I wasn't so happy here & in a good club already. To each their own...
