I think they are basically replaced by camming.
I was going to say - the internet- I don't know much about the albuquerque scene, only places there Ive been to was the ice house and knock outs- and that was a decade ago, so I dont know if they still have any, nor know of any where I am. That said I noticed a lot of the more traditional ways to get a " skin fix " are going away. Now that I think about it, I see way fewer magazines, much smaller dvd racks and so on. Everything outside clubs seems to have moved to more digital forms anymore.
they used to have one near me in this run-down sex shop in a small hick town in southern nh..a girl i worked with used to work there and she said she made good money..i think they still do it. the owner's wife ( around 40, blond hair, skinny, HUGE fake boobs) used to clean up doing that ! only one i've heard of though
I agree, though I would broaden that comment to also include online porn, tons of free high-res naked pics floating around cyberspace and a variety of other online content. As high speed Internet connections became commonplace at the turn of this century and the amount of online content exploded, it simply became much more convenient for guys to do their thing in the privacy of their own homes.
After this, I believe that peep shows got caught in the middle between online content and strip clubs, being too inconvenient and limited in comparison to the Internet for guys simply looking to jerk off to hot naked chicks, yet too impersonal for guys who prefer the up close and personal attention that strip clubs offer.
What also didn't help peep shows were their seedy reputations, basically as places where pervy guys went to jerk off. This made them easy targets for the politicos in places like NYC and Boston, who zoned a lot of them out of existence even before their natural demises.
I've always wanted to work in a peep show but have yet to see one that doesn't look extremely shady. I know they still exist, but my impression is that they're fairly rare and don't pull in much money. They're usually tacked onto "adult bookstores / superstores" to boost revenue. They're also really hard to find unless you know the area super well. They aren't usually called "peep shows," and the businesses that have them are usually too small to come up in a Google search.
Obviously it's a bad sign that the Lusties went out of business in SF and Seattle. Seems like peep shows really are a dying breed. For me it's the best of both worlds: the customer gets an orgasm and I don't have to touch any of them.
I went in one in my area, there was one girl working (waaay run down looking, & she was chatting w/the bookstore clerk) so yeah seemed way dead to me..also what GR & Rick said, I knew a guy that managed one in another area, & he was always having problems with it, that one's prob. gone.
I think all the ones my city died the last one I knew of closed a bit ago. I had a gf that used to visit them often she doesn't anymore. I live in Philly so YMMV.
Oops just noticed you're from Philly too, nevermind.
This is interesting. At one point, not too long ago, vinyl records were considered obsolete. Now all the hipsters crave them. I bet a peep-show with hot burlesque type girls, that was nice to hang out in, could rake in both nostalgia money plus $ interest from guys who basically grew up with digital porn.
Think about it, anyone can see random hot girls' vulvas all day long online. In a peep show, not only can she see you, which we all know so many guys crave, hence cam2cam, but she is right there, just out of reach.
Lusty Lady in SF closed earlier last year. It was a mainstay. Bummed.
I noticed the OP is from 'Filthadelphia', there used to be a HUGE place across the river in Camden, NY, prime location right before the BF bridge. It was a combination porn shop / peep show booth, believe they converted to a higher end gentleman's club, likely because they were already adult zoned and someone recognized that value. Agree on the comment about records, and still believe a real 'strip show' would still make money.
A high end gentlemen's club in Camden?
I love the concept of peep shows. It bums me out that they seem to be a thing of the past. I do think ChloeMay made a good point about things going from obsolete to hip. I doubt it would make much money but I could picture a hipster peepshow doing well enough in Northern Liberties where the hipsters seem to be hanging out.
There used to be a few adult bookstores in Boston that had peepshows in the back. They were actually very popular for a while but very much on the seedy side of things. I was young and naive back then and it took me a while to figure out why there was always a guy with a mop and bucket around the back of the book store...
I've also been to the one in NH that Simone mentioned and found to be a pretty forgettable experience. Everything is relative however and, if you live in that are, there isn't much around in the way of clubs. NYC was loaded with them years ago-everything from one-on-one shows to live sex shows in front of an audience. Just as VHS killed porn theaters and porn peep booths I think camming has pretty much put live peep shows on the decline.
I go to strip clubs for interaction and relaxation-same with escorts. Peep shows have always been about just getting off and guys can do that with cam shows or porn. Cam shows are in fact more interactive than any peep show booth I was ever in back in the day. There was very little interaction between the girl behind the glass and the guy. Maybe things were different in other parts of the country but in Boston it was a fairly cut and dry experience. It would be interesting to see someone try to do a more classy version of the peep show experience but I just don't know if the business is there to support it.
Funny, I went to the wood flooring place across from the aforementioned peep show about three times before I looked up while waiting for the traffic to break and saw what was across the street.
Never went in but had a laugh just at the look of the place
wow, as I said, been almost a decade since Ive been back int he duke city ( was born and raised there ) Is the burlesque building there by 1-25 still there? I remember when that first opened up and the bitch fest it caused for a while because it was so " pink" and distracting. Icehouse was always sorta neat- granted they didnt have booze but generally everyone seemed more relaxed and social there than not, had friends working there off and on too. TD's was another one I remember but knockouts by far was my fave- that and I lol knowing across the street from it are mostly attorney offices aaaaw the joys of down town
What's the most shitty part of SF's Lusty Lady closing (Seattle location is still around, I think....) is that it was worker owned & operated. Hourly wages were GOOD. Insurance was offered. They had a RAD variety of girls too. Lots of fundraisers for breast cancer and other causes. And it was somewhat of a novelty destination. I have friends that don't really go to strip clubs but would take occasional group trips to Lusty. Pretty cool.
The floor in the booths was always sticky and gross though. o_O
^I'm pretty sure both Lusties are closed. Seattle closed before SF.
