can't her mom just pack her lunch and a snack that doesn't have those ingredients in it?
We can’t even tell from the story where this took place, but obviously this is a private school. These so called “rights” normally should not apply to private entities. If she does not like the school, enroll the kid somewhere else.
And what is this business about a peanut butter sandwich. Is the story trying to tell us a child cant bring a peanut butter sandwich from home?
most schools are pretty much peanut free now. I think there is a caf table in my local school that is peanut ok, but most rooms areas etc. no nuts
Peanuts are one thing tho, imagine how your kid would feel sending their little friend to the hospital, or worse, because of what they had for lunch.
Not at all the same as stupid diet ideas, I mean, how ling before the raw foodists sue[no offense to any raw foodists.........
I want to know why kids are so fragile these days. My mom got annoyed at this stuff when I was in elementary school; the most she had as a kid was a classmate with a peanut allergy. But all these kids allergic to eggs, dairy, wheat... it's crazy. At my high school, we couldn't bring ANY balloons in case they had touched a latex one, because ONE kid in the 2000 had a latex allergy. I was in a preschool classroom last night and the list tacked to the wall of kids with allergies was a whole page 0_0
But this mom is being totally unrealistic. There are eggs and dairy in 80% of the food we eat, so what is this girl going to do? Live in a bubble? If that's the case she needs to be homeschooled. You can't make the other kids suffer for one allergic kid. She's going to have to deal with this her whole life, so you might as well teach her now. If it's airborne particles, she needs to stay away from others who are eating, maybe eat lunch in a classroom or something.
^ i completely agree about kids getting all these health issues these days! allergies and obesity being two of the main ones..i've never had any allergies and growing up neither did my friends. i blame it on the disgusting food we are forced to eat with all the crap in it that wasn't in it before.
i also agree about homeschooling your kid if its that bad! private tutor maybe
I've never had allergies with the exception of getting major migraines if I drink orange juice, but both my kids had milk allergies and my youngest had milk, peanut (life threatening) and tree nut allergies. Fortunately the milk allergy she has grown out of but the peanut and tree nut allergies could kill her and will be lifelong.
I'm very glad she doesn't react to airborne particles. I was very careful who watched her when she was a toddler but when she reached school age she attended public school, had sleepovers and ate with their families - avoiding the things she needed to (and I contacted the parents and let them know she needed to avoid certain things - and also had an Epi-Pen should she accidentally get any which never happened).
She's a well-adjusted popular kid now as well as being on the honor roll, so it didn't hurt her socially at all. I think it's ridiculous to expect a school to change the entire menu around for one child. How would that even be possible? there is always going to be something around that someone is allergic to.
I heard about a kid who can break out in a painful rash if he/she even touches a banana peel. I don't know about anyone else but I don't remember anything like this in the 80s. Then again, it is not really the kind of thing kids pay attention to or care about unless it is one of their friends.
There is something going on with food, just not sure anyone has a real answer.
Fuck This. Fuck That. And Fuck This Lady in Particular.

This falls squarely in the category of "YOUR PROBLEM, not mine". Why should dozens upon dozens of children be denied food that is generally considered to be nutritious in order to accommodate one child?
The mom is downright delusional... “She was in her classroom with her classmates, while they eat her allergens around her..." She. Her. Her. Her. Her.
I'm sorry, but last time I checked food isn't called an "allergen". It's still FOOD to the majority of society. "Food that my daughter is allergic to..." would be a far more accurate statement.
Mommy Dearest continues: "If a child showed up with a peanut butter sandwich, they wouldn’t be allowed to sit in the classroom and eat it. If somebody showed up to Elodie’s classroom with a cheese sandwich, then they just sat at their desk and ate it.”
Fetch the smelling-salts! I'm feeling faint!!!

This woman is A-Okay with other peoples' children being kicked out of class (or having their food prohibited) to make her little darling happy.
That notion is so screwy it should be in a hardware store.
Mommy Fear-ist isn't done yet: “Reasonable accommodations that fall in line with our doctor’s diagnosis is just plain common sense.”
This woman wouldn't recognize common sense if it scissored her after date-night.
Common sense looks like this:
-Teach your kid not to eat things that are questionable. No matter how tasty they look...
-Pack your kid's lunch.
-Have the kid carry an epi-pen or two.
-Teach your kid how to use the epi-pens.
-Make sure the school/classroom has epi-pens available.
-Change schools if you still feel worried.... or homeschool your kid.
>:(
If the girl were affected by the air borne particles rather than having to directly interact with the food that she is allergic to and was in a public school, then I could understand her wanting more accommodations. However, the girl isn't and if the mother isn't happy, she should move the child to a different school or homeschool her child. The school has already changed the menu so the girl can eat the school lunches. Why should kids not be allowed to bring a packed lunch with those items in it if breathing in rather than ingesting the allergens don't harm her?
We are constantly punished for the transgressions and disabilities of others.
If she wasn't being forthright about what she feels her daughter needs to be safe, and instead was being thoughtful about how other kids are affected; there would't be an article about it. I don't think her job as a mother is to be impartial about things that have serious consequences for her kid. That seems like someone elses job, someone paid to deal with all the neurotic moms and the needs of all the kids. I just see her as being real, no need to preface her statements with apologies or pretend she is upset that a kid she doesn't know might have to start eating breakfast at home. When did kids start earing in class all the time anyway? No wonder they are so fat.
On the other hand this makes me think of the wall, and kids eating gray slop called something else that makes it sound like real food. Maybe that is how it will happen, some miracle goo that everyone can eat but nobody wants to.
If you don't eat your meat how can you have any pudding!? How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat!!?
I think that's going too far. As already mentioned.... what about teaching her kid what foods to avoid? or packing her lunch? Seems so many people want things changed just for them.... without taking any kind of proactive approach themselves.
