FBI arrests Revenge Porn King

:O
Thursday morning, the FBI arrested 27-year-old Hunter Moore, the founder of "Is Anyone Up," a now defunct website dedicated to publishing revenge porn—softcore or hardcore amateur pornography supposedly submitted by scorned, anonymous exes and usually accompanied by the purported names and addresses of the people (usually women) depicted. Moore—dubbed "The Most Hated Man on the Internet" by Rolling Stone—was taken into custody along with Charles Evens, 25, for allegedly conspiring to hack into the email accounts of hundreds of victims in order to steal nude photos and post them online. Moore and Evens were indicted in federal court in California and charged with one count of conspiracy, seven counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer, and seven counts of aggravated identity theft.
According to the Village Voice, Moore's website posted over two dozen nude photos a day, almost always of women, along with screenshots of the victims' names, social media accounts, and location, which he added in order to maximize Google search traffic. Last year, he was fined $250,000 for defamation after accusing an anti-bullying activist of possessing child porn. The local US attorney's office released a statement on the arrest. Here's an excerpt:
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
good! what a piece of trash
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
Bet he had a botched circumcision
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
I'm so glad that scumbag got caught, hopefully they'll get him off the internet for a good while. They should give him a heavy sentence to set an example.
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
Too bad none of his exes had pics of him...
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
There are probably other charges criminal and civil that they could slap this guy with too.
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
That kid is from SF hahaha. He used to fuck a lot of girls who were turned on by his fuck everything attitude (its very free-spirited there anyway so its not like anyone cares). He made IsAnyoneUp and then a bajillion more girls started throwing themselves at him. So I guess his plan worked.
Honestly, I don't think much of anything will happen to him. This is really hard to prove and I don't even think its true. The media makes him out to be a way worse person than he really is. He did exactly what Nik Richie did where he ran a website and anonymous people submitted pictures, which got posted on Hunter's site. I think he was actually inspired by Nik Richie. But those same ~*anonymous*~ picture submitters could have just posted those pictures on forums or tumblr or wherever else, so its like Hunter was a neutral factor here. Its not like Hunter was personally taking or collecting these pictures- all he did was run the site... which anyone could do. While I don't agree with posting real names, again the anonymous picture submitter was the one that gave this info (not Hunter), and again this same info could be posted on forums just as easily. And Hunter had said that the only reason he posted that name information was to prove that they were of legal age to ensure it wasn't considered child pornography (people often put their birthdates or the school they attend- which proves they are over 18 ). He didn't start out doing that- he was forced to do that when the child porn thing happened.
And later on, his website basically turned into little 18 year olds submitting their own nude pictures and telling all the site readers to follow them on twitter. Majority of the girls who tweeted him toward the end of the site would tell him they wanted to fuck him, and then they'd hookup (mutually of course, with the girl initiating it). Then his site was bought out for an undisclosed amount of money by an anti-bullying company.
I really doubt he was dumb enough to hack into people's personal accounts. Because, if that were the case, why not go after him like 4 years ago when he started the site since he allegedly did this when his site first launched?? All it would have taken was a screenshot (login IP addresses are logged), a police report, and a call to a lawyer and he would have been arrested and put in FBI custody a loooooong time ago.
I am very skeptical of this, and I really think a bunch of his "victims" (aka the girls who lost their jobs because they voluntarily took nude pictures and sent them to someone and that person anonymously sent them to Hunter's site IsAnyoneUp) got the same lawyer and the lawyer is trying to use this as a defense. Or he pissed off the wrong person and they set this up. I know he was stabbed before or something when someone got pissed about a picture posted and they came to his house. So him being set up wouldn't really surprise me either.
I will probably get a lot of hate for this, but I don't think Hunter is any worse than like Nik Richie, or anyone who runs a third-party platform website where OTHER people submit pictures of OTHER people. Its not like Hunter was going around taking these pictures and posting them without permission. The girls (and guys) personally chose to take the nudes and send them to someone, and that person personally chose to submit the pictures to IsAnyoneUp aka Hunter's website. Of course Hunter (as does Nik Richie) complies with the law where, if someone requests a take down (like a DMCA) of the picture/name/post, he did it. But it wasn't him (Hunter) submitting or gathering this information.
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
And if you ask why I think it isn't true. 1.) I just highly doubt he was that dumb and 2.) the article states: " for allegedly conspiring to hack into the email accounts of hundreds of victims in order to steal nude photos and post them online."
So tell me... these were random people from all over the world (mostly U.S.) How would Hunter even KNOW these hundreds of victim's email addresses when he had never met them before?? I kept very close tabs on this site (because it originated in SF where I was living), and there were like NO people posted from San Francisco, and Hunter said himself he refused to post pictures of people from that area or Northern California for fear that he would get attacked. So obviously Hunter didn't know the people whose pictures got posted on his website, and none of them were from where he lived.
So how the hell would Hunter even get these ~*hundreds of email addresses*~ to hack of people he didn't even know? If the media is implying that the anonymous picture submitter (usually an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend) included the email address along with the real name and location (which would make sense)... well, obviously there was already a nude picture included with that information so why would there even be a need to hack an email address when you already have the nude picture you are after?? That makes absolutely no sense at all. And I'm like 99.99999% sure its not even true.
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
An indibtment isn't the same as a conviction. There are a lot of issues involved in this case which could potentially cause 'fallout' regarding US server based adult pic and video postings in general. This case is definitely worth watching.
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
I dunno, GR. I think in addition to the people contacting him on twitter, he must getting 1000s of emails from followers as well as those who have contacted him from media, the victims trying to get their stuff taken down, etc.
Vocativ . com has some great articles about him; I find that the one pertaining to "The Family" and his branding strategy to be interesting.
I do hope something happens. It will set a precedent either way.....and hopefully it won't set the example that people can continue violating others without legal recourse.
I read that there were Paypal payments to the dude he had hacking? Seems like someone web savvy would know to stay away from Paypal.... I'd assume that THAT paper trail, if real, would be more damaging than the gov't trying to insist he got into emails. Moreso that the intention was there.....
Ultimately, this dude sucks. Mr. Richie is a toolbag as well.
Hunter is a shitty "DJ" with lame tattoos, a lack of respect for women, and wears fucking tank tops all the time. I dunno, dudes in tank tops ALL THE TIME bother me.

He had a whole team that worked on his website, so I see nothing wrong with paying them via Paypal. He also had a personal lawyer who gave him legal advice and advised him what to do every step of the way to make sure he did nothing illegal. He ran a legit business and paid taxes. So I'm sure he had to pay his employees or independent contractors somehow...
Also, since when do thousands of people randomly keep nude pictures of themselves in their email accounts? How do they even do this? Email these pictures to themselves? Its not like email accounts have upload storage. Wouldn't you just text message someone the picture or keep it on your desktop instead? Why inbox? This is total news to me because I didn't know it was ~*a thing*~ to keep nudes of yourself in your email inbox. Not only that, but how would Hunter even know all these people kept nudes in their email accounts?
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
Yeah, but adding to their naked or compromising pics their Facebook, location, and personal info? Even the "Girls Gone Wild" scumbag didn't stoop that low.

All of that information was submitted by the anonymous person who sent Hunter the nude pic in the first place. Its not like Hunter could look at a nude photo and magically know who this random nude girl is along with all her contact information... obviously someone had to have given Hunter the information. Hunter said himself he refused to post people he knew, or people from where he grew up/lived (Northern CA, and I'm assuming NYC as well). And Hunter said posted links to facebooks or twitters so he wouldn't get in trouble for posting underage girls, and didn't even do it until he actually did get in trouble for posting someone underage (he obviously didn't do that on purpose- some girls just look much older).
While I don't agree with it, again, the anonymous submitters could have posted the same information all over forums or anonymous websites that didn't belong to Hunter, so I still see Hunter as a neutral character in these matters.
Honestly, if my nude got posted and I wasn't working in the adult industry, I would tooooootally say my email was hacked or that it was a photoshopped pic. Who wouldn't? Otherwise, these people would already be working in the adult industry if they didn't care.

Indeed, this case is going to set some important precedents.

( link story about defendant being held without bail )
Indeed it would appear that 'somebody' is pushing very hard at the federal level to 'take this guy out' , and don't seem particularly concerned as to whether he was acting legally or illegally !!! All the more reason that this case bears watching.
Re: FBI arrests Revenge Porn King
Maybe he did this bullshit to the wrong person's daughter. Plus, I think that a large portion of the porn world freaked out when their info was hacked and posted. Sharing naked pics with a lover should not equal consent to have those pictures put online.
