well your carry on doesn;t get weighed, so put the bowling balls in that, but they have a scale at the check in desk, so by that point they kind of have you. I wonder if the sky caps can help http://www.airfarewatchdog.com/blog/...t-the-airport/

I don't think I can possibly fit anything else in my carry on bag it's packed! Ugh. I went through the bags again but I just can't get them down to 50 lbs. I have one at exactly 50lbs, one at 53lbs and another at 56lbs. I'm thinking I'll take the 3lbs stuff out of the 2nd bag and put it in the 3rd bag, that way I just have to pay for one bag being overweight...
Some airlines do actually weigh carry ons when you check in, though they don't always care if it's not grossly overweight. It really depends on who is checking you in though.
Audrey -- definitely put all of your extra weight in one bag, but I really recommend trying to pare things down since the overweight charge is an extra $150 for over 50lbs. The absolute limit is 70lbs, so if you can't pare down, may as well go all the way. (http://www.airnewzealand.ca/excess-b...-united-states) I often find that my bags weight slightly more at the airport than when I weigh them at home, so try to keep them just shy of 50lbs if you want to avoid the overweight fee -- otherwise you'll get stuck leaving things behind the airport or paying the fee.
I've had good luck using a cheap converter with my Chi in the UK, so I'm a little bit surprised you've had issues -- but since you've had issues, leave them behind (maybe with a friend or family member so you can use them when you return, even if that's 2+ years away) and just get new styling tools there.
Yeah I saw that, ugh. It's ridiculous that an overweight bag is more expensive than an extra bag! I don't know why that 56 lb bag is so heavy anyway, all it has in it is clothes. It doesn't have one book or boots or anything, just sweaters, dresses, jeans, and tops.
When I was in the UK the last time I was using a god, not a Chi. It made weird flickering noises, got super hot, and would just routinely shut off. I got worried it was going to blow out so I stopped using it. But maybe the Chi will work fine. To be honest the last thing I want to spend money on right now is a new straightener!
^^^ for better or worse, the airlines can go by the letter of their rules / rates. Whether the airlines will actually be sticklers or not is a calculated risk. I agree with Shanna that, for two of your three bags, rearrange things so that neither weighs more than 48 pounds on your own bathroom scale. It's not worth the risk of getting nicked for $150 in overweight charges on these bags, or being forced to leave things behind at the airport to drop enough weight to avoid the overweight charges.
Then you can load up your third bag to 67 pounds if you can't seem to live without an extra 19 pounds worth of stuff ( which is going to cost you $150 in overweight charge ), on top of the 'full price' extra bag fee. It's a lot better to be bringing a total of 163 pounds worth of luggage with one $150 overweight charge, than to be bringing the same 163 pounds worth of luggage with three $150 overweight charges !!!
Consider the possibility that you're being 'penny wise, but pound foolish', in regard to your curling iron etc. You can buy a new European voltage version after you arrive with the $150 you won't be spending on the overweight bag charge.
I'm doing the same exact thing in a couple of months- except I'm moving to Sweden. Since I'm visiting Sweden next week (I haven't seen my bf since September and Norwegian airlines is having a killer sale on flights- 624usd roundtrip) my plan is to bring two large checked bags and my carry on full of things I can leave at my bf's house. Then when I move in a few months I will do the same thing. Hopefully that will take care if most of my things.
But you have a different situation. I would recommend parcel post. It takes a while to get there, but do look into into it as it is cheaper than FedEx.
Perhaps your mom can store your extra belongings for a few months. If you plan to visit home within the next year or so travel to the US with your free checked bag and a carry on- both empty. Retrieve the items you left at mom's. You can even fold away and extra duffel bag in your checked bag and only pay for the extra checked bag on the return flight.
That way you can visit family and friends and get the rest of your belongings in one step- if you're willing to wait that long to go get them!
That's so funny we are both moving from Los Angeles to Europe right now! I just sold my car and have loads of stuff to get rid of too :/
Also keep in mind the difference in weather when you pack. Most clothes sold in socal aren't sufficient for London weather. Even though we are approaching spring, there's still lots of rain in store for London until the summer months. If I were you, I'd leave most of my warm weather LA clothes here and come get them later- or get rid of them if you can (or aren't attached!) Same goes for shoes- cobblestones are a bitch to walk on in heels/wedges. I have no idea how you dress otc, but I stick to flats when traveling Europe unless I'm at a festival like wave gotik treffen.
^Yeah I've bought a LOT of clothes for London. I basically just had SoCal clothes, so I had to buy some wool coats, scarves, gloves, etc. I mostly wear flats, I probably own about 30 pairs of flats at this point (I am a clothes horse!) so I've got lots of those, but the other stuff I didn't really have,
Where in Europe are you moving to?
I'm packed!
I ended up with 2 bags overweight. UGH. I literally tried to fit so much stuff into one bag that I broke the zipper on one of the compartments and I tried to move everything into the other bag, but the way the other bag was packed I couldn't fit enough stuff into it... and I'm so fucking tired of packing I'm at a "fuck it I'll just pay the $300" moment right now.
^^^ xStichesx is correct that USPS international freight will ship a max 20 lb box to the UK for something around $110. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than overweight bag charges. However, in your specific case, having a known UK street address to ship to may be an issue. And your flight is coming up any day now, isn't it ?
And with virtually every airline, discount 'advance booking' a couple of extra 50lb ( or whatever ) suitcases along with your flight is BY FAR the cheapest method of fast international shipment. Unfortunately, if you try to add any more suitcases, or if they exceed the 50lb ( or whatever ) limit, costs quickly become VERY expensive.
^Exactly. I don't know I should have started doing this weeks ago but of course I put it off and not only do I have so much to before my flight leaves at 4pm tomorrow but I'm just so tired of dealing with it! ugh
^^^ well, best of luck !!! And regarding a million things to finish at the last minute, just tell yourself that you'll have hours and hours to catch up on lost sleep during the flight !!!
OMG I'M NERVOUS!
Less than 4 hours to go until my flight... :-[
So welcome to London!!! Im actually just flew in today myself. Im just here for a few days though.
Good luck in London!!! I'll be across the sea in Gothenburg, Sweden. :)
Such a mess at the airport! OMG. So I got there and one of my bags was so overweight they said they couldn't even put it on the plane-- I swear I weighed it at home and it was like 3 lbs under the limit, but ugh. So I started moving stuff into another suitcase but then I was going to have to pay the overage fee for 2 bags ($300) and the check in person told me I should just get another bag, so one of the porters was able to find a box I could move stuff in...
Then they told me they needed to weigh my carry-on bag. No one has ever weighed my carry-on bag in all the years I have been flying on planes, and I travel a lot. I had stuck everything heavy in my carry on so it weighed 40 lbs and the limit was 15 lbs... well my bag alone weighed 12 lbs so that was so not going to work. The check in person was REALLY nice and ended up doing something on the computer so that I could check that bag for free at the gate.
Then I got to my apartment with my carry-on bag, giant box, 3 suitcases and my make up box and had to climb 4 flights of stairs to get to my room. After doing that I don't think I will ever have to go to the gym again!
At least you will save money on gym fees ;-) Travelling sucks in general, but hey you are there and ready to start the adventure. Your posts make me want to pack up and move too- good luck and have a blast!
^^^ for better or worse, every pound of weight ... passenger or luggage ... translates into X gallons of jet fuel at $4 per gallon ! It's not surprising that airlines are starting to weigh all baggage, including carry-on's, in an attempt to limit total weight, and to charge as many fees as possible, to cover the cost of that jet fuel.
The fuel cost situation has gotten to be a big enough issue that one airline is now pricing passenger tickets by the pound as well !!!
(snip)"Is pricing a plane ticket based on the passenger’s weight fair?
If you’re taking an international flight on tiny Samoa Air today, your fare will be based on your weight, along with that of your luggage. The cost is 93 cents to $1.06 for each kilogram"(snip)
On the 'bright' side ... you and all of your luggage got there in one piece !!!
^That's crazy! Yes thank god everything is here. I'm not exactly sure what their reasoning is, he said it was because of turbulence on the plane, that it was a safety issue, perhaps if the bag is overweight I don't know it might fly out of the overhead carriers or something?? So bizarre. I don't know why United would be OK with not weighing the bags but with Air New Zealand it's different, perhaps it is just related to fuel and they're simply blaming it on the safety issues to sound better. My mom drove me to the airport and was helping me move my stuff into different bags and asked him if it really mattered if it was a few pounds over and he said "yes it matters because it's a matter of someone's life." I will say though that there was a LOT of turbulence on that flight, way more than I've ever experienced. I know the weather was bad but still, I took a sleeping pill and could only get 4 hours of sleep because the plane was so rocky that it kept waking me up. The "fasten seatbelt" sign was on almost the entire flight making the bathroom lines very long!
^That's funny -- every time I have flown United, they've weighed my carry ons! I think it just really depends on the agent checking you in, though I think it's getting increasingly common because it's such an easy cash grab since many people assume it won't happen. If you fly any of the low-cost airlines while you're in Europe (Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizzair), be sure to weight and measure your carry on (only one -- no bag and purse in most cases) or else you'll get dinged huge fees!
That's so weird! Yeah I flew United back in November and they didn't weigh my bag, and I flew whatever the super tiny plane is that goes to Mammoth from LA in January and they didn't weigh my carry on either. I just hate how airlines are trying to think how to charge for anything and everything! Honestly I was shocked that I got two meals on my flight, normally I just get a glass of water or orange juice (United told me they did not have wine the last time I flew them to the UK).
I'm taking Ryanair this weekend when I go to Spain so I'll def have to use a different bag as a carry on!
