This was literally what I did (but not Harvard). MUCH happier in sexwork. I always knew that is what I wanted with my life.
"Last autumn I sat in a midtown cubicle sorting receipts for my boss’s monthly expense report. I had recently earned my master’s degree from Harvard and had accepted a coveted yet thankless entry-level position at a well-known philanthropic organization in New York City. My parents were proud of me, and I was proud that they were proud of me. Convinced that I was doing the “right thing,” I spent a year botching Excel spreadsheets and crying in office bathroom stalls. This is the American middle-class 20-something’s dream, I told myself."
"The men I meet online rarely fall into the category of “anonymous assholes who have abandoned all social etiquette,”
LOL she clearly has never worked on sites like Streamate or ImLive. What site did she work on? I'm guessing MFC. She mentioned traffic decrease as well, which would make sense because a lot of girls on MFC have claimed that.
Same! I worked in my vanilla, degree-earned field for more than a few years but am MUCH happier now! It just goes to show the "traditional" path is not always the happiest and Robert Frost was right, take the one less traveled by. [I KNOW that is not really what he means in the poem but so what!]
so funny, my friend sent my that yesterday! well, i'll still be camming my way thru a non-Harvard local university
I was well on my way to becoming a superstar adjunct humanities professor when I started dancing. LOL.
I know I'm biased, but this article was a little hard to read because you can still see the hold that the cult of academia still has on her. She needs to be the smart libertine camgirl. Never the dumb slut. To the extent of limiting herself to a niche demographic that strokes her ego (mm bb GENIUS l ron fanfic!) but doesn't pay her bills. I'm not a cam girl, but she is like every broke student who comes into the club, talks nerdy to customers, makes $0, and whines about how DIFFERENT she is from the rest of us. I was this girl six years ago too and I'm still mortified.
Academia, especially *prestigious* places, can turn the nicest people into total assholes. You are special. Nobody in the outside world will understand you. And even if you choose to leave us, you'll fight to preserve the $200k flame of superiority you paid us to light in your soul. Or else you'll have to confront that you were duped.
I hope she learns to separate her personal and work lives in the future because what she's doing now isn't working for her. And these people all just bother me so much.
Funny, I'm pursuing the opposite route..
When I see this type of articles, I have two conflicting thoughts at the same time.
1- Not another, I work in the sex industry and I have a bachelor's degree/master/phd in ____ from the prestigious university called_____. I must be a unique snowflake.
2- Oh great, now people can see that all types of people from different walks of life do sex work.
I feel like she thinks she's really unique, bless her heart. I'm willing to bet that over half the members of this forum have at least a 4 year degree and have held enviable jobs in the corporate or academic world.
I think she needs to realize that intelligence is not the rarity she believes it to be. I had customers taking me private to discuss Irigaray years ago. I predict she'll make her real money writing about her "scandalous" life as a camgirl, people will eat it up, because she'll convince them she's not a "typical" cam girl/ sex worker. I'll probably read it and then be annoyed with myself for doing so.
I am happy to have my degree but I LOVE this work so much more. I have tried dancing, escorting, videos, and camming. Enjoy it all but really love being at home with camming/clips4sale and enjoy the small bit of privacy that escorting provides (vs videos that get listed on free ones, tube sites etc). If I can make this pay the same as my degree... bye bye vanilla world.
How crazy that we pay so much for school and make more doing sex work? Sooo she went to Harvard with all that student loan debt and is now a webcam model?? And how did she get such a shit vanilla job after graduating from HARVARD ???
in reality a great paying job after college isn't always garenteed,as a kid are parents/guardians sale us dreams until we get outside and find out the reality of this world, just like disney sale little girls prince charming stories until she grows up and figures out what some guys are only about,we are all blindfolded with religion, politics and money to the point where some people don't know what's real and what's only a maraj of the governments truth.
The government is only about 1 thing MONEY and what brings in the most money and plays a big part in our society? RELIGION and SEX,but religion plays the bigger part.
Why people make more money in the sex industry then in the vanilla jobs? Sex is taboo and a mystery so it sales like ice cream on a summers day,now remember it's going to be a sticky situation since religion plays a huge part in society,so on one hand some people will be clocking figures but on there next hand they'll be getting judged for clocking sex industry figures.
Because school is a business, and a very successful one. If it wasn't a business, education wouldn't be so expensive.
If I were an employer, I would rather hire someone who was SMART with their money and hard-working (achievements) than someone with an expensive degree and fewer achievements. Not saying you can't go to an expensive school AND be smart AND be hard-working/have achievements, but I know sooooo many people who would never afford an expensive education without taking out six figures of debt. And that just isn't... smart IMO.
My guess is that while she may have a Harvard degree, she probably doesn't have a family with connections.
We see a lot of Ivy League grads go on to good jobs, but their degree is really just one part of the equation, they usually also have family members pave the way for a good job somewhere, way before graduation.
Even in a non-shitty economy, it's all about who you know, but it becomes even 10 X more important in business, when the economy's in the toilet. Unless you've got hard to find technical or science skills, there are always going to be a ton of other smart, capable people who are equally capable of filling that good job opening. But when you have that "in" with the decision maker, you go to the front of the line.
I also have my bachelors degree and have never used it. I would much rather cam and run my own little business, people don't get it but I'm glad that you ladies do!!
