Applying for citizenship and camming... Pretty concerned...
Hello there ladies!!
I was just reading that thread about camming and state laws, etc and I got a bit concerned...
I m a US permanent resident and I never had any issues when submitting my tax forms from the sites I worked for, I got my first green card like that and then my final 10 yrs green card as well.
I m planning to become a citizen this yr and my plan is to have a regular job by the time I file my papers... ( and stop camming all together too)
The thing is, just like I did for he green cards I ll have to bring with me the tax forms from the last 3 yrs and I m concerned about if on the interview they asked me exactly where I worked, what I did what should I say... or if this will bring me troubles and I ll have to re apply for citizenship after working a regular job for 5 yrs for example..
I would LOVE to do it this yr but I don t wanna get in trouble with immigration or with the law for doing it having 3 yrs of camming under my belt...lol
I also read someone here saying camming was illegal... but If it s considered "illegal" why the hell do we still pay our taxes??
That I know of, no illegal activity pay taxes right?
Anyways , maybe someone can give me some advice on if I should be ok applying this yr or if I should wait, get a regular job, work for 5 yrs and bring in tax forms from a regular job instead of this...
Once again, I never had any issues before , nobody asked me anything, they did background checks twice and my final green card I got it without any interview cause the paperwork I sent was enough to convince them to issue the new card.
If there s any girl here who has gone through that I would love hear your experience :)
Thanks a lot for reading ladies!!
Melanie

This is the only mention I've seen regarding camming (often) being technically illegal:

As such, if you are caught operating an 'adult' business in a residential area, you are potentially subject to prosecution. However, in the 'real world', the likely result won't involve prosecution for zoning violations, but immediate eviction ... with the landlord also probably attempting to hold you responsible for all remaining rental payments for the remaining term of your lease, and with the landlord providing a 'black' reference that will make it difficult / impossible for you to find a new rental in the same city.
I have no idea what immigration officials would make of this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were neither aware of nor particularly concerned with local zoning laws.

I put online chat hosting on my forms when I got my citizenship last year, they didn't even blink. If you're applying for a visa in a foreign country, it might be different. I already had my K-1 when I started camming and when I did my check ups before "swearing in" they didn't care.
There's another Romanian girl that just got her K-1 from meeting a client and she's in the US now. Her only job ever had been camming and she had no problem getting it.
Camming isn't illegal on the federal level, which is what the US State department cares about.

Oh ok so then I should be fine.... And congrats on becoming a citizen Katy!! :)
I suppose having a regular job by the time I file my papers should help as well right?
As long as they don t ask me details about those tax forms I submit I should ok.
I ll have plenty of evidence that I m still married to my husband ( that s why I can apply now, otherwise I would have to wait 5 more yrs if we were divorced) and let s not forget about the civics and history test..lol I ll study my ass off for that too!
But I just wanted to make sure that camming won t " disqualify me" to become a citizen...
Thanks for the replies!!
Re: Applying for citizenship and camming... Pretty concerned...
If you apply based on the 5 year rule, you do not need to bring tax docs to the interview, but if you apply based on marriage ( 3years) then you will need to bring anything that proves the relationship still stands, including those tax docs. Anyway, what you do should not be a problem. The officer will be too busy checking everything is there in order to see what exactly your occupation was, at which point you can always say csr from home if asked. Good luck!
Re: Applying for citizenship and camming... Pretty concerned...
Hope I do fine, I would like to get it this yr so I can forget about immigration forever and I don t have to take a train TWICE all the way down to NYC to get a passport from my first country....
Once I become a citizen here it will be easier to get an American passport than an Argentinian one, sounds crazy but it s true! and if I move to fl next yr I would have to drive all the way down to Miami to visit the consulate if I have to...
That s why I would like to get over with this and not have to worry about paperwork anymore.
My main thing now is getting a regular job I suppose that will help big time and if they make questions most likely they will about the job I have at the moment and not what I did in the past or about the tax returns...
I ll keep u girls posted if I apply sometime around July or so :)
Thanks for the replies!!
Re: Applying for citizenship and camming... Pretty concerned...
Your experience may be different, but in my DHS interview they were worried only that I was a terrorist or mafia member. They didn't ask about my job or income at all. All of the financial support requirements are (theoretically) already accounted for when you get the visa the first time. Once you are applying for citizenship, they are just looking for a criminal record or ties to anti-American organizations.

That s a good point!
I mean I ve been camming for almost 6 yrs now when I got my last J1 visa ( to do an internship at a hotel), then my 2 green cards and both times they did background checks, I showed my tax returns every time and no questions were asked.
I ll study hard for the history/ civics test and I love this country so I suppose I ll be fine :)
Thanks again girls!!
