Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church therapy

What do you think?
I was thinking it sounds all very fine when they say that they want to help victims of human trafficking, but it's not really clear how the program is supposed to do that. If you were a victim of human trafficking, then how would doing the program help you escape? It sounds as though they are just trying to tell these women what they should be doing with their lives.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
It's just slut shaming pure and simple. They even kicked a girl out of the program for refusing to be ashamed of herself.
I'd rather just take my misdemeanor prostitution charge and go home then go to some psycho church reprogramming nightmare designed to make me hate myself, but that's just me.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
It's only ok if they pay the sex workers the same exact amount to attend church.
Now get the collect plate started!
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
It's good that there are people out there who want to help but if I was one of these prostitutes, I would not take any form of therapy from a church. I wouldn't want religious people telling me how sinful I am etc.
It's kinda f*cked up because neither the pimps nor the johns have to go through this and they play into the equation just as much.
This would be a good idea if therapy was independent of church/religion.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
I'm all for counseling (including job training)to help prostitutes leave the streets but this sounds like a cult. Not to mention tax payer funded and I don't like religious organizations generally getting taxpayer money (and I am religious). I bet someone in the church is connected to someone at the police.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
^ Totally agree. I think it's a major violation of church-state separation when you've got a church taking taxpayer dollars to preach to prostitutes.
Also, "diversion therapy"? I have a totally negative reaction to churches claiming they do any kind of therapy - being a theologian does not automatically qualify you to play the role of a psychologist or social worker. Sounds way too much like "conversion therapy" - the pray-away-the-gay nonsense that churches have been doing for a long time.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
I must say that this church is just evil. Jesus would have never judge prostitutes...he would be open and honest with them. He would have embrace them as his sisters and allow them to choose their own path. Sure, he would have told them about the bible. However, he would have offer them love and kindness. Not trying to openly slut shame these women because of their jobs. This church is an perversion of the Christian faith. Punish the women yet they do nothing to pimps who abuses these women. Also it seems like they want to reprogram the women for a bizarre and perverted reason. "True Christians" huh? I doubt that!!! Churches like these are a disease to the Christian faith :(
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
I doubt such victims would be free to go to church. It's stupid and a big LIE by a bunch or self-righteous LIARS.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
Because we all know there are no healthier attitudes about sex than those espoused by the church.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
“Arizona taxpayers foot most of the bill to help the women, paying $3,000 to Bethany Bible Church when the two-day raids are conducted each month.”
If anyone were paying attention, they might note this appears to violate the establishment clause of the First Amendment.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
It makes me sad that so many people are so hateful towards sex workers that they see logic in this. They're helping victims by making them feel deeply ashamed of themselves?
If these women really are victims of pimps and/or human trafficking, why should they feel an ounce of shame?
It's a crime that taxpayer money is funding this.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
They're thinking maybe they go from VIP booth to confessional booth?
(I kid)
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
I think the day will come when the US Supreme Court will strike down prostitution as a crime, as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause. Common sense says if it's OK to do something for free, it should be OK to do it for compensation. You'd need strong objective evidence to justify it.
Re: Sex workers being forced to choose between being arrested and having church thera
Why does the program have to be offered through a church? Can ARIZONA not find a recovery, support group that isn't church based? Although I might get criticized for this I suspect that there are women who prostitute that are religious. Hypocritical? Perhaps. Imo religion or not a prostitute is not likely to stop voluntarily and if she were it wouldn't be because of religion. My gf once told me God hated strippers but I disagree. Every time I go to work I pray for God to watch over me and help me do a good job and make money. Every time I make a lot I thank God. The nights that I've forgotten to thank God for making money well coincidentally I don't make ish the next shift. It never fails. Churches and groups such as this make women want to stay away from religion even more. If I start to believe that God hates sex workers than I'm going to avoid the guy 100% because I can't "face" him.

How do you figure it is a violation of equal protection?
