Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
How much did you drink and/or smoke before age 30? What aging effects did you see and when did they start?
I've smoked between 0 and 4 cigarettes a day since I was 16 (26 now), and my drinking ebbs and flows but I've been binging more often in the last year. I know the health risks, but sadly I worry more about my longevity in the industry in the immediate term. Any anecdotes would be appreciated. I would also welcome observations of non drinkers/smokers who have known those who do long term.

I'm still smoking and drinking ... and generally my stained teeth and facial wrinkles are the LAST things that guys look at !!!

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
i'm not 30 yet, but i smoked from 17 to 25 and my skin was BAD until i quit. i mean dry, flaky, sallow, cystic acne flare ups, and when i saw a tiny hairline wrinkle show up on my forehead i quit. its gone now and my skin is supple and break out free ( except i get tiny ones before periods). its much more radiant! my teeth used to be naturally incredibly white, but after smoking they are just average :/ i need to get them whitened again.
i was never a drinker, so i can't comment on that one. but i know drinking and smoking ABSOLUTELY do damage to your looks ( not to mention your body of course). they did a study with identical twins where one smoked and drank, the other didn't..the one who smoked and drank looked a good ten years older. the only thing that's just as bad for your appearance aging wise is tanning

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I smoked (16-21) and partied hard (18-20). I'll be 25 next week and I can already see the wrinkles under my eyes. I see photos of myself during that time and my acne, dark circles under my eyes, stringy hair, and low weight make me SO GLAD that I quit fucking around. I still drink, but it's a glass of wine or a beer here and there. No more liquor for me.
Tanning is the other thing that I've noticed is super-detrimental. I see older dancers who would probably be smoking hot if they had used sunscreen while they were younger.

I quit smoking & drinking yrs. ago, & nvr regretted it.

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
Yup quit drinking and drugging years ago. If anyone asks me if I want a beer I look pointedly at their waistline and say "Empty calories!"

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I'm not 30 yet but I started noticed aging effects (not sure if smoking or drinking related or just bad water, environmental, general aging) very early, like age 18, so I started taking aggressive steps and I look fantastic in my mid 20s. if I slack off I can see my skin quickly creep up and look haggard so constant dedication is necessarily.
great things include:
vitamin c serum
daily sunscreen, I keep it in my purse
very minimal botox and fillers
chemical peels-lactic acid is my favorite
glycolic acid in creams or as a gentle weekly peel (no downtime)
retin a
dermaplaning
lasers

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
Never smoked (tried once). Hardly drink (drunk only once, never want to go there again). Hate bright sun. Late 30s.
Most skin not appreciably different than in 20s except when thoroughly dehydrated (another thing I should watch for!). I don't take particular care of it, either.
Greying hair is quite noticeable if left to its own. Fortunately that is one of the easier problems to fix.
I guess I'm off-topic, but what I'm trying to get at is that smoking and drinking do have a major effect. At least this is my conclusion from attending my high school reunion.

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
i've stopped drinking alcohol 4 years ago... not usually drank big amounts back then either.. just a beer or two, and a vodka shot in the weekends.
i have been smoking since i was 14... and how i'm 21, so that's 6 years with a pack/day..
this is my conclusion, for now...
except of the fact that i was a little overweight..
smoking made my teeth yellow, and my gums very sensitive when brushing
the skin on my face was pretty dry and flaky
i would have a VERY VERY difficult time walking up the stairs
calcium defficiency pretty frequent
and the worst of them all .... smoking + birth control pills + weight loss pills = transient ischemic attack at the age of 16 ( minor heart attach with no permanent damage), i have to pay some extra price on medical insurance, and i've noticed that during cold times, i'd actually get more sinus and throat colds than before.
i've now quit smoking normal cigarettes, and switched to electronic cigarette.... best decision ever!
i don't stink, my house doesn't stink, i can lay in bed and vape, stay on cam and vape, it's super cheap, i have NO problems whatsoever when climbing the stairs (actually, difficulty breathing is actually due from the tar that gets stuck in those small holes in your lungs), and electronic cigarette actually helps with the dry throat during winter because of the vegetal glycerine contained in those e-liquids.
Two downsides with electronic cigarettes is the nicotine content...
1. you still inhale nicotine, so be careful with birth control or any blood medication because nicotine thickens the blood.
2. You have to be disciplined with it... i had 2 bad episodes with it when i had nicotine poisoning, due to vaping like a maniac during 24hour cam-a-thons.
please do be careful with smoking, guys... my dad smoked 2 packs a day for 20 years. Fortunately, his lungs were cleam, but the cigarette smoke actually ''dissolved'' his lower teeth, and they weren't attatched to the root anymore, and they had to remove all four lower teeth and the gums were too weakened and fragile for screw implants, and now he has a fake teeth plack or something like that, purely decorative.. Be careful !!

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
^ i love my ecig too!! i quit smoking a year ago, never looked back, the ecig probably saved my life. i'm down to 0.6 percent nicotine now, next week going to go to 0. the downside to me is that its expensive because i vape so much :/
-
Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
i don't know the concentration percentage i'm at right now, but i started with the bottle saying 36 mg, and now i'm down to 16 mg...
please let me know if you feel any decent throat-hit with 0%, because i might also downgrade to lower amounts soon :)

HI! Can you ladies please tell me which Vape brand etc you guys are smoking?? Because I have tried a few, and yuck either I did not like them or they were no help at all; I took 2 puffs and threw them away. I really need to quit smoking especially if I want to have a baby anytime soon...

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I was never much of a drinker (had a fun couple years in my 20's) I did smoke from 16-27. Quit five years ago and I really haven't drank at all or much in the last 5 years. One of the best things I ever did. Aside from all the health risks it ruins you body....skin, teeth, hair. I feel SO much better. I hated smoking. Waking up hacking, always having a "cold" getting sick easier, the smell in my hair and on my clothes and just the control it had over me.
I did it cold turkey. Weaned myself down slowly. I had tried the patch before and it just didn't work, seemed to actually keep me addicted.

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I smoked (lightly) off and on for about 9 years (age 25-age 33). I quit because my dentist pointed out my teeth had staining/damage from the tobacco. I also wasn't heavily addicted to the nicotine, and smoked the "pure" Native American brand tobacco vs. chemical laden cigs.
I cut back my drinking due to health issues and it was a good thing. No one really needs to drink more than a few drinks a month or a few beers a week. At age 23 I spent about 6 months drinking almost daily & quit when I noticed I was feeling depressed & had a booze belly. I only resumed drinking as often after age 27 & naturally grew back the booze belly.
I look youthful for my age due to good genes and never drinking or smoking to excess. This is just my good luck. My paternal grandfather drank & smoked heavily- and lived to age 89 with no medical intervention to extend his life. NONE. There are vegetarians & athletes who don't live that long!!!!
Your best educated guesses about your future health are going to come from discussions with your doctor.

That response is tremendously rude! It's not cute and it isn't funny.
A simple "No Thanks" would do the trick! No judgement, no smarmy snarktastic tactics.
WTF?

green smoke. it hits the back of your throat like a real cig ( only much smoother), you don't have to pull hard to get a drag, the flavor is amazing. i tried the other ones and wasn't impressed, blu smoke in particular sucked! the only drawback to the green smoke is that you're gonna be paying for the good quality..so expensive.

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I've actually thought of maybe trying an E cig (for camming) but haven't yet. Drinking, ugh no way.
-
Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I drink a lot and only smoke when I'm shit face drunk because cigs taste SO good when I am hammered. Otherwise, I just vape and smoke weed.
I need to stop drinking so much, lol, it is responsible for the 10 lbs I have put on recently. I am 21, and it was my mission to try every drink there is. Now I'm getting sick of it.
I take really good care of my skin, I have for EVER, and I get told I look 18 all the time. I use the L'Oreal Youth Code products, moisturize twice a day, drink nothing but water (and whisky lol) and eat REALLY healthy (I'm pescatarian and occasionally eat chicken) plus exercise daily. I think the most unhealthy thing I do is get drunk a lot.
So, I guess we will see how things are looking in ten years.

I don't smoke tobacco any more, but still smoke cannabis on a near daily basis. I smoked cigs from 1986-2008. I drink every day, mostly red wine, and never get shitfaced drunk. I stop after I feel just slightly buzzed.
I easily look 5-10 years younger than my biological age. I use tooth whitening treatments, but have never been to the dentist for whitening. No botox, no fillers, no laser skin treatments. I've only had a boob job (can't fight gravity).
I figure that how quickly you age has a lot more to do with genetics than it does with any behaviors one engages in. I make sure I get plenty of sleep, eat tons of fresh fruit and veggies, Work out daily and stay very active physically.
Here's a recent photo with no makeup. I'm 44 years old: Attachment 39490

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
^^My mum is your same age and her face looks similar to yours (very few wrinkles, clear complexion), although she's fat :/
She also wears sunblock everytime she's out.
Did you also used sunblock everytime you went outside?

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
I used to drink a lot every weekend for about 3 -4 years to help relax and be more social but then cut back when I had a kid.
I actually can't drink alcohol because my body doesn't metabolize it even when I 'pace' myself and drink quality liquor thus I end up with raging hangovers from drinking small amounts of liquor. So to avoid this I try to avoid alcohol.
I never liked cigarettes or nicotine. Damn near everyone in my family was a cigarette smoker and my mom used to chain smoke but many of them quit.
I notice my skin and face looks good refraining from this stuff for a while but I do look older when I stay awake late hours so I try to sleep before 10pm, exfoliate my skin, and stay hydrated.

Re: Question for drinkers and or/smokers who are 30+
Thanks Tourdefranzia! It's so reassuring to see a makeupless picture of someone your age who's smoked longer than I have and has similar drinking habits (well, you drink slightly less than me -- I get a buzz most nights, drunk one or two, but hope to change that). You look fantastic! I want to stay in the business as long as possible, but have been freaking out lately that I've shortened my shelf life to 35, so you've given me hope.
I still want to tone down my smoking and drinking for health reasons, but hopefully my good genetics (both sides look young), more or less healthy diet, and lack of sun exposure will buy me another 20+ years.
If you don't mind me asking, could you estimate how many cigarettes you smoked a day on average?
